      I'm about to purchase the 2021 merida scultura 400 disc for around 1940 AUD. Should I do it? Do you think it can handle light gravel? I'm so tempted, not sure if it's the right decision

  • @thedownunderverse
    @thedownunderverse 4 роки тому +2

    Interestingly, the Scultura 100 has a frame/fork that is identical in every way to the 400 (same 6066 aluminium, triple butted, full carbon fork etc. etc.) except that somehow the lower model 100 gets an English threaded BB. To me, that's a reason to choose the base model over any other! Very tempted to give a rim brake version a ride. If I like it, I'll strip it down, and build it up with Campy. Might be a bit of a "sleeper" frame, Merida's alloy is top notch and the shapes on this frame look very well done (it's got aero optimised down tube too)

    I can’t believe the weights! That’s the main reason I don’t want a disc brake road bike! Also, I don’t need DBs. Cannondale have been smoking something with those prices. I’ve upgraded my Caad 12 rim brake bike with 38mm carbon wheels and other upgrades for a similar price to that 105 Caad 13 and it only weighs 7.5kg! Caad 13 disc, No thank you! Nice content! Your quest criteria started out exactly as mine now recently : Alu + 105, but at Point 3 I have Rim brakes instead of hydraulic disc. Living in the flattest country in the world is probably the reason. Writing this in Corona age where apparently the demand for bikes outruns the supply, I'm faced with the following scenario. Now I finally have a budget, a narrowed down selection (obviously similar to yours, but then the rim-brake versions) and guess what: for all candidates availability is down to either size 49 or pre-order for 2021.. Bummer 😀

    just found this vid.. However i already ordered an Alu bike as my 1st oad bike prior to this vid.
    For SEA/Taiwan, it seems Giant still sell TCR Aluxx SL/SLR Disc models. However the disc models are not on Giant website.
    With my budget for ~usd1400 for a 105-R7000 bike, im limited to used market (2021 is not a right time to get a bike, as ppl jacked up the prices, even for used bike).
    I narrowed down to Scultura 400 and TCR Aluxx SL1 as other bike just not possible to get with 105 r7000 even for past year model used. I got lucky to find a lightly used TCR Aluxx SL1 Disc 2021 model that uses Giants proprietary Conduct hybrid hydraulic disc system(probably the user decided to ditch it due to that system). I havent got my bike yet (still in shipping, import from Tw by an agent who deals with used bikes) but i already watch tutorials how to maintain the Conduct system. If i enjoyed the bike, i'll keep it and probably swap the brakes to full hydraulic Ultegra r8020/105 r7020 in future since the Conduct also uses flat mount caliper.

    I built an Allez Sprint rim brake bike a couple of years ago. A great looking bike and fun to ride. Compared to My Tarmac SL4 it is a more aggressive cockpit and feels much stiffer. One thing to note about the Allez. The seatpost is proprietary and even with the seat Stay geometry it is really stiff. Also, I kind of prefer a very slight saddle “off centre” position. a few degrees to the right. With a seat post like this, that kind of offset is impossible.

    The Trek Émonda ALR 5 Disc is by far the best in the list, especially in this beautiful glossy gradient purple colour. It is, unfortunately, not the lightest, is not compatible with 30mm tyres and lacks the absolutely indispensable rack AND mudguard mounts, but it's no doubt the prettiest of all the bikes in the list by far. I'd go sa far as to declare it one of the most beautiful aluminium bikes overal. Other very handsome aluminium bikes I would suggest - are the Pinnacle Arkose D-series 2020 (not available in Australia), the Koga Colmaro 2020 (the welds are beautifully-smooth - like carbon!).

      Melbourne Cycling Segments I have an Allez Sprint that I love. I can also say that the the caad12 and the Emonda Alr are awesome also. Two more awesome alloy models are the BMC team machine Alr and the Bianchi Impulso. I find that they all have a light responsive ride that equals carbon in performance. I was also told that the A6 alloy used in the Fuji Roubaix is the same as Specialized E5 alloy. I don’t know if it is true but it’s what I was told by two different bike shop owners. Both owners also told me that Giant(largest bike manufacturer in the world) makes most of the bikes we ride because they make them for other manufacturers. Manufactures like Specialized, Cannondale and Trek.

    • @jasonsmith7345
      @jasonsmith7345 5 років тому

      Melbourne Cycling Segments from my experience with them the Allez Sprint is the stiffest, fastest, most responsive bike I’ve ever ridden regardless of material. The rest have what I consider a comfort ride. Although all of these feel like racers to me. All climb well also. I would definitely recommend riding all of them. The two that surprised me the most were the Emonda Alr and the Impulso. I was actually going to purchase an Emonda Alr until I rode the Allez Sprint.

      @@jasonsmith7345 Great input. Is the Allez Sprint reasonably comfortable in comparison? Say compared to the Impulso?

    • @jasonsmith7345
      @jasonsmith7345 5 років тому +1

      Melbourne Cycling Segments I would say that reasonably is a good description I don’t find anything uncomfortable about the Allez Sprint. I do long rides all the time on it. Also with the Allez Sprint it seems the stiffness negates the weight. It just jumps and responds to every little input. The Impulso is very high on comfort but the Emonda Alr(2017 or 1st gen) and Caad12(2017) are probably just as comfortable they caught up to Bianchi with those models. To me the Impulso(2015) was and still is comparable to carbon comfort/cobble bikes when I rode it it was back to back against a Cannondale Synapse, Specialized Roubaix, Scott Cr1 and Scott Solace they all ride similarly Although the Solace and the impulso seemed a bit stiffer through the bottom bracket than the other two which made them better climbers. The Allez Sprint(2017) has a Carbon fork and Seatpost so there is decent amount isolation from road vibrations. I thought I was going to purchase a caad12, then I rode an Emonda Alr and couldn’t justify spending more on a caad 12. Then i happened to stumble upon an incredible deal on my Allez Sprint. This is the fastest bike I’ve ever ridden and that’s really why I got it.

    This bike was really easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
