    Well done. Informative and interesting. I flew passage Red-tails for four years (1 per year) in CA while I waited for a captive bred Harris. Then flew her for 8 more years and reached level of Master. I retired from falconry to be a full time daddy to my two little boys, now in their twenties. This brings back very good memories. @@dyinhope6840 I think you may be a little confused with what is a "sport" and what is not. Wild hawks have a successful hunt rate of about 10% which means that the odds favor the prey (lions also have similar kill rate and are better described as scavengers and ambush predators). Hunting with guns is another whole level where the predator's success far outweighs the prey's survival. One is a sport and the other isn't. I hope you can understand the difference. This not to say that hunters who use guns to kill for food are wrong, misguided, cruel, etc.; it is a survival of a species and is an acceptable way of life provided the prey will not become endangered in the culling process.

As said in the video there are a lot of birds of prey that dont make it to adulthood, I think this way of preserving the species instead of just having it in a cage doing nothing is much better for the emotional state of the bird of prey. Its still doing what its meant to do, like hunting and eating, just not at once because the human is trying to provide stable food for it by having it hunting a couple more.

It’s all about the money

    I live in Kentucky. We’re not overly known for our birds of prey. Mostly just the bald eagles that usually nest around large bodies of water and the Ohio river. That being said, where I live, there seems to be a flourishing population of Red-tailed hawks. Not only do I typically see a few every single day. I’ve mistakenly thought some of them were eagles till I looked more closely. I don’t know what they’re eating but they’re getting plenty of it. I know there are some fish farms in the area but I don’t know if red-tails will hunt fish.

    A third benefit of the high perch is the hawk gets to come to an easier landing by coming in low and trading speed for altitude. He comes to perch going only half as fast as he would without the quick ascent at the end. If this was not true it would come in straight and level. Watch him. Beautiful bird.

      Nature is what it is. Pretending animals AREN'T hunting/killing other animals EVERY day somewhere--THAT'S the true delusion. Do you call bears "murderers" when they're catch salmon at a river? Are praying mantids "murderers" when they catch a grasshopper? Are sharks "murderers"? Leopard seals, "murderers"? River otters, "murderers"? Hawks, "murderers"? Polar bears, "murderers" How abt deer, plant "murderers"????? Seriously, people need to learn to ACCEPT DEATH is a part of LIFE; NOT learning that at an early age is actually quite detrimental, mentally & emotionally. People living in the country learn this early, while suburbanites/city dwellers are the most removed from understanding this. My bet is you're in suburbia/urbanite. Being overly sheltered is actually unhealthy; too bad so many "woke" people are blind to this fact.

    I REALLY want to learn falconry, how and where do you go to learn it? I've always had a love and respect for large birds of prey and ever since about 8 years ago I figured out I can do an exact replica of a barred owls call. Also one of my main goals is to become an avian specialist especially because I own chickens and it's kind of sad how little people know about diseases and sicknesses that affect birds, so I definitely want to try and contribute and learn as much as I can.

    Won’t the rabbit hear the bell and make it hard for the bird just asking

    • @TheReptileProject
      @TheReptileProject 5 років тому +7

      Richie Moon the bells don’t really make a difference. We make so much noise walking around that the rabbit get scared any way. He only starts chasing it once it’s already running.

      Richie Moon no didnt you see the rabbit in the bushes wearing shades with a mini rabbit sized drum kit playing cowbell to confuse the hawk lol.

    How often do you have to fly a hawking to keep it well

    • @JosephCartertheMinkMan
      @JosephCartertheMinkMan  5 років тому +1

      Five or six times a week is ideal, three or four times a week is minimum.

      He gets to fly at the very least 5x a week. 7x if I have the time

    Hawks do not have problems with "cropstasis"?
    I know with a category 3 emaciation case in rehabilitation you cannot let them eat ravenously for fear of then not being able to process the food on a cellular level and die

    • @JosephCartertheMinkMan
      @JosephCartertheMinkMan  5 років тому +3

      That doesn't typically apply to strong healthy Birds. Though smaller more fragile species like kestrels do you have a higher risk then big strong ones like this red-tailed hawk.

    Just a quick question .
    How do you manage to actually train the minks ?
    Are they easy to train in the sense that you use their natural instincts to hunt i guess like the dogs .
    Do you cover this in your book ?

      My hawk doesn’t mind being around strangers. He accepted Joseph’s presence right away.
