This performance of 'Hallelujah' by Emma is nothing less than sublime. It is a beautiful work of art matched only by the angelic appearance of Emma herself. I can't even imagine what it would be like having that much talent and ability: speaking 3 languages fluently, playing 2 musical instruments, and having world-class, top-tier vocal skills....are you kidding!? It's all beyond my humble comprehension. But even more, having the confidence, composure and courage to perform as she does while battling a horrific, debilitating disease....it's too much! I consider myself a strong man, but frankly, I don't think I could manage it. And more, she is only just barely 16 years old! I am in awe of Emma Kok.
Emma is an emerging megastar. Under the tutelage and friendship of Maestro Andre Rieu she is already mesmerizing audiences around the world. The overwhelmingly enthusiastic responses she is getting from audiences in Bahrain, Abu Dubai, Paris and Sofia are off the charts. In Athens just last week she was surprised when she walked onto the stage to perform 'Make the World a Better Place' and the orchestra began to sing Happy Birthday to her (she turned 16 on Mar. 12). Momentarily overcome with emotion she hesitated to begin her performance, and in that brief interval the audience spontaneously began to sing to her the Greek version of Happy Birthday! How special is that? I can't think of anyone in this world more deserving of the love and adoration that she is receiving than Emma.
Thank you again for reacting to Emma. Also for the personal shout-out. It is my 15 minutes of fame. All the best to you and yours.

Then you both will appreciate Emma's performance on the yearly Memorial concert we have here in the Netherland to honner the fallen US soldiers during WW II. Search for her cover "Father" and watch how she deeply connects to the song.❤

Thank you for another wonderful reaction. And I so agree with you that Emma doesnt need the backing vocals or the big orchestra, especially in this song. It does take away from her stunning voice. Therefore I think you will really like this version of her singing Hallelujah on her local tv station at her own home, with just someone on the piano. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/CS4ZCwjpkbw/v-deo.html

A reaction that does justice to a wonderful performance, thank you.
For a full on emotional experience consider reacting to Emma’s rendition, in English, of ‘Father’ (Demi Lovato). Its extraordinary. Performed for the 2023 Liberation Concert last September at the American War Graves Cemetery in Margraten.

This is a vid of the 8 songs that Emma did in her Voice Kids competition 2021 when she was about 12/13 years old. I'm not sure the copyright status, but it is a good watch, showing her progression from unsure but determine kid to confident performances & being able to connect with the audience!

This next vid is just a glimpse of what it is like to be connected to her feeding tubes 22 hours a day. It is a charming vid that showed her being welcome back to school after winning the Voice Kids.

I have heard a Christmas version and it is beautiful, but it is a different song. It helps me to rmember that Leonard Cohen, I believe, came from a Judaic background and that this song has it's roots in the old testament where there was begatting and smiting a-plenty, along with some coveting and psalmistry. These verses specifically pertain to David, Samson, and possibly Solomon, in additon to being Cohen's commentary on his own relationships.

It occurred to me when you said you would have preferred this without the backing singers that there is a simpler version of Hallelujah sung by Emma. She is just accompanied by piano which itself is very subtle. You may like this version.

With Andre Rieu in Germany she also sings in German "Ein bischen Frieden" (a little bit of peace)

I totally agree with you about the performance in general.
She doesn't need it. It's actually a pity that this video option was send to you.
There is an amazing performance with Emma singing this song guided by just a piano. OOO M G!!!!
    Now that was sublime!
If you ever, and I know it probably won't happen, but if.... you should give that video a chance. Bone chilling performance...
Though I like this version, I think she is about ten years to young to sing this. Me personally think it doesn't fit a 16 year old girl.
Was it awesome? Absolutely... Good it be better... Yep...🤷
I like your nice, open and genuine reaction in this... Thanks for sharing your thoughts...
    👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌷
Just to make sure... Below you will find the link to this "piano" version with Emma.

Chris, your reaction is so good, here's a few more for you, first, some English songs from Andre's Christmas concerts, she starts a capella, and then Andre builds it into a full blown performance with the orchestra and his other singers, but through it all, Emma shines out so clearly, and it's another sublime performance by her,
White Christmas, this is the 'official' version
    ua-cam.com/video/ZZEyhG2bEeM/v-deo.html
The next song was also from the same series, and is again an English song, 'All I want for Christmas is you', and again Emma stands out so beautifully in this song,
    ua-cam.com/video/xCBOVw7PErU/v-deo.html
Andre is also giving Emma new songs to sing, and not long after Christmas, as part of the first European segment of the world tour, he gave her a song to sing in German, another language that she's fluent in, and again, he gives her an a capella start, then builds in the rest of the orchestra, and the chorus, then the sopranos and tenors, and after that, she is also given a beautiful counter harmony verse, her stage presence is incredible, she has had that ability from a very early age, we're dependent on two audience captures, the first is a short, so has to be stopped when it goes into repeat, then load the rest of the song from the second video, and they're an acceptanble quality.
Ein Bisschen Frieden a song in German, she starts it with a cheeky smile and a raised finger for quiet, and then a capella for the first verse.
    ua-cam.com/users/shortsi-eX4AGKbIM
    ua-cam.com/video/aC-QtYbGRoE/v-deo.html
I also mentioned her stage presence, this next short snippet was recorded when she was (I think) 11, she's the smallest one on the stage, and her awareness of the audience is so good, even this young, she instinctively knows how to work the audience, and she does things like chide them gently because they were a bit slow standing up, which provokes laughter, but she has an incredible stage presence.
A young Emma commanding the audience at a Canta Young youth choir event,
    ua-cam.com/users/shortscjXU1ioj6CE
These next two are special because Emma recorded them at a time of deep emotion for her, a very close friend, Angela, passed away, I think she also was a gastroparesis sufferer, and they were very close. It's an indication of her incredible personality, her life has been hard, but she has come through so much with an incredible strength and determination, she has a goal, and her focus on achieving it is laser like, she is an incredibly driven individual and Andre's words for her is that she is 'a podium beest; a stage beast, as often the smallest one on the stage, she has the ability by sheer strength of personality to absolutely dominate the stage, and everyone around her,
The first time I heard this song, it registered with me, but at the time, I didn't see the notes in Dutch that Emma put in there, so the fact that Angela has passed away didn't register, then a few weeks ago, I was checking my files to make sure that things were still on line, and I put the notes that Emma added into Google translate, and then when I realised how significant the song was, and then listened again, the last line broke me, Emma will be more than aware that her own life expectancy is uncertain, and she'd literally just lost a very close young friend, and she sings a line that's so heartbreaking, 'Yeah, I know, you'll tell me when I get there'.
Quite how she sang that so well, I don't mind admitting, I shed tears hearing that, and knowing that she very much aware of how close that could be to her own experience, and it put a new significance and emphasis on some words she spoke at the liberation concert, at the end of the duet, when they talk in English about remembering the lives lost, and telling their story, she responds 'I will, for long as I am able to', and when she said it, there was an edge in her voice, and I think I understand it better now, she is so much aware of the fragility of her life. That went deep for me.
The two songs for Angela are When I Get There - @PinkVideoVault
Translation of the note in Dutch,
'Last night my dear friend Angela became a star! 💗
I'm going to miss you incredibly much, but every time I look at the starry sky I know you're looking back 💗'
    ua-cam.com/video/0nIpN86mw6E/v-deo.html
The second you already know, it's a part of her first single that you reviewed earlier,
Memorial song for Angela,'Laat Mij Een Vlinder Zijn 13 May 2023 a video short,
    ua-cam.com/video/k-ZtoS0E1B8/v-deo.html
'Today I had the opportunity to sing at the farewell of my dear friend Angela 💘
Angela always wanted to go viral with her tiktoks, she wanted to be popiejopie! Let's make this happen, share this message as much as possible so that Angela goes viral and she can really be popie from above ♥🙏🏻'
You liked Hallelujah, here's a different version that I think you'll like even more, she sings with a male voice choir, and she was a bit younger and smaller at this time, this is a more traditional version, but Emma's performance in it is stunning, she is so powerful again,
Emma Kok en de Mastreechter Staar Hallelujah, 2 years ago
    ua-cam.com/video/o3uskk3objU/v-deo.html
    Her second single, Strijder
version with English subtitles, VERY helpful
    ua-cam.com/video/e2em5mVtZmQ/v-deo.html
This is another song that was written for Emma, and again, the pressures and implications for her life of gastorparesis are very much to the fore in this song.
Going back a little, Emma first came into the public gaze in a big way with Voice Kids in 2021, which she won, and the video of some of the songs from that time,
    ua-cam.com/video/20gXikNRjbo/v-deo.html
and she was only 12 when that started, it shows how tiny she was, and how polished a performer she was at even that age, her stage presence, and her vocal skills compared to her competition makes it clear why she won, right from the outset, she got all four chairs turned during her blind audition, I don't know how she got to those low notes at 12, but she did it, and then, when she went into belter mode, that got the judges, and by the end, they all wanted her.
She's now well and truly embedded with Andre and his orchestra, for at least 2024, and I personally am hoping that she'll stay with him for a while, and let him help her to soar even higher, he will give her songs that challenge her, and with the orchestra behind her, the songs are so powerful, and Andre's 50 years of experience will mean he can gently help her become even better, and he is a very safe place for her, he is sensitive to her health issues, and a much safer place than some of the other places that might be looking to exploit her talents, in that her stamina is limited, there are very clear limits to what she can do, and with how Andre feels about her, in many ways, she's almost a grand daughter, and he's very protective of her, I'm not sure some of the other companies out there would be so respecting of her health issues, so being with effectively the best private orchestra in the world is for me the best place for her at the moment, even if her own perference is for a more pop oriented culture.
Andre did a wonderful thing for her in Athens for her 16th birthday, he flew the rest of the family and some of her close friends in, and then also got 13,500 people in the audience singing 'Happy Birthday', after that, the audience went impromptu, and sang a Greek song for her, and it was lovely to see it happen, there's an audience capture of it at
    ua-cam.com/video/_-7vc9JrJfE/v-deo.html
After that, she then does a lovely performance of a Michael Jackson song, 'Heal the world', a full orchestral and singer version.
A TV interview in 2023, as part of another award contest, Emma is interviewed, in Dutch, and it's possible to get a reasonable translation of it into English, albeit with some errors because of the Limberg dialect, which is slightly different, and then she sings Strijder, very powerfully.
    ua-cam.com/video/xyCnZWtgNpo/v-deo.html
That's enough for this list, Im out of space, even if you don't review all of these, they will give you a lot of listening pleasure, and I've tried to give you a flavour of just how good she is, and I hope that you enjoy it,
I'm still going to close with my signature sign off, I really do want to get as many people as possible to support her foundation, Emma so deserves a few good things to happen in her life, and I'd really like it to be a long life, and at present, that's very much not a certainty unless better treatments or a cure can be found,
A closing heartfelt plea to everyone reading these comments.
Emma's foundation can be found at gastrostars.nl
If at all possible, please join me in making a (regular) donation to her foundation, to enable them to help patients like Emma, and research this awful disease, and hopefully find a cure.
At the moment, they are a small group, and one of their main people is a surgeon who has a lot of experience in dealing with gastroparesis, and she is not only a surgeon, but also suffers from the same disease herself, to the extent that as a result of her condition worsening, she's had to leave her role in the hospital, and she is now dedicated to the foundation, and working to help find possible new treatments, or even better the cure that will free people like Emma to live a more normal life, rather than be tied to the feeding pumps for so many hours every day.
It would be wonderful news to hear that they have been able to change the outlook for Emma and others, it would be tragic if Emma were unable to continue to sing like she does, while she looks stunning on stage, her stamina is not good, so it is a very delicate balance to maintain her health, it would be so good to hear that the situation has been changed by the work the foundation are doing, Emma would then be free to spend more time doing what she loves so dearly.

Christianized lyrics? You must be joking. Leonard Cohen was NOT a Christian. He was a Jew turned Buddhist but first and foremost, he was a poet. He could craft a tune like nobody’s business but his lyrics were pure literary art. Changing them to pander to some personal religious belief is nothing short of vandalism.
