Any sound guy/girl would tell you...
To be efficient, your handclap must be visible from the side by the camera. So, on screen we are able see the exact moment ( = frame) your hands are getting in contact.
It's not only about clapping hands, it's about making the sound "visible" by the right orientation of both hands exactly when they clap, relative to the camera.

Thanks for the video, but would there be a way to capture the audio of a train that is 1 mile away?

The only way I can think of is if you had the mic near the train(but a safe distance to get the audio) and then added it in the post-editing as most of these mics have a certain range. I know the DJI mics are Up to 250m (820 ft.).
