Who are the haters? This book isn't even a historical novel. It's THE NEWS. And Profesor Bernstein is a real teacher.

Here are a few things to consider. Do you think the American Dream is alive and well in this story? Why? Why not? Does the novel seem to suggest that there are some flaws with this dream? Is the dream on the verge of crashing? Why? Why not? Could the novel be sending some message about what might cause the downfall of the dream?

Thanks! Feel free to share the link to the video if you think your fellow class members would benefit from it. I actually have a bunch of videos on Gatsby. As for the 4 sets of questions. . . .well, I've got to be a professor here and say that you need to write them down for yourself! There's something about actually writing them for yourself that helps you take them in more fully. ;-)

Is it possible for you to make a video explaining plot, settings, language, figures of speech and, motifs for annotating different books on the American dream.

It can be tricky to make these kinds of connections. Is this a speech for an English class or for just a speech class? Did your teacher give you any specific instructions? These details will help me give you better feedback. I have to say, though, focusing on a book that's connected to Great Neck and hence of interest to your audience is a great hook!

Its funny but watching the modern version of Great Gatsby was such a deeply horrible experience-- Baz Luhrmann is the epitome of a shallow, empty director, that it actually motivated me to read the book which I hadn't done in years. Such a wonderful classic it is... It is ironic that a terrible, vapid film interspersed with needless modern hip-hop music and directed so poorly could actually have a positive effect-- I bet others were also motivated similarly

Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge was unbearable--so amazingly bad. The framing narrative he added to Gatsby was ridiculous. There's a great episode on Gatsby on Studio 360s "American Icons." I'd include the link, but UA-cam won't let me. Here's what Jonathan Franzen has to say: "In 50,000 words, he tells you the central fable of America...and yet you feel like you are eating whipped cream."
