This movie is like a video game. The protagonist follows the clue and gets the truth without much of a consequences unlike the true world. The other characters in the movie are like nonexistent and only appear to give clues to the protagonist when asked. A particular scene where sam jumps over the wall to enter songwriter's resident, the dustbins are like there to assist him for that purpose
Just saw this movie Finally thanks to another youtuber talking about it. I had this same thought about the trash cans. There was something smaller next to them as well, like there would be in a game. There was another scene where he jumped a wall and there was a rock perfectly placed for him to step on. I thought it was weird as it was a short wall that didn't need one since Andrew was tall enough to hp it anyway but maybe they put it there to make it just a bit easier on him. I usually never get pulled out of movies with thoughts like that but that one hit me. Probably because I was already wondering how much of the movie was even real to begin with.
When i finished watching this movie i was like "Ok...great movie, awesome photography, but that's it." The next few days i kept processing all of it and was getting more and more interesting to me, and now i can definitively say that UTSL is one of my favorite movies.
The message of the film is as transparent as the treasure map "hidden" in the box of breakfast cereal. If we take this film, and place it over an earlier map, we get another clue to the message. That earlier map could be Mulholland Drive, but the style of UTSL references MD from the beginning, so it's likely a different film. A film released n 1988 [the time of release for issue #1 of NPM. 'They Live' was released in 1988 and might be hinted at in the contact lens billboard.
Best analysis so far. Nothing is organic about our culture, it is planned and marketed. We put way too much stock in it and drive some sort of importance from it when it means absolutely nothing compared to life’s problems for example the fact that this character is soon to be homeless. All of us are Narcissistic in our own ways just like he believes that there is a message for him to discover in art that is mass marketed for the population.
In all the analysis I see, most people make the mistake of taking this movie as a realistic story while everything is surreal and allegoric. I see people talking about schizophrenia or hallucinations, but this movie is just not based in reality. For insurance the songwriter is not really a songwriter, it's the representation of fame, the message is that it doesn't matter if you have a rebellious image like James Dean or Cobain, you are still the system, all the musical hits are written by the pursuit of fame. The scene ends with the ending Fight Club theme, which the perfect representation of the system selling you the revolt against the system. And when they talk about heaven after death, that's not a cult reference, they still talk about fame. The only way to survive death is to be remembered like a celebrity, while we will all be forgotten as if we never existed. That is a real afterlife as they say in the movie. The protagonist has easy access to sex and no consequence for his violence cause he represents the viewers, the movie viewers that like passive voyeur look for sex and violence in the movies, later they revel that the system itself creates these needs to fulfill them. The protagonist also has and use money the whole time, he just don't want to pay for his house cause he wants to lose it, he subconscious wants to cut with his delusional past ruled by the media agenda. The dogs are obviously not real dogs as well, they represent the blind love for someone, the celebrities fans that never question the system. The movie is a about the new anti Hollywood movement that started in the crazy conspiracy theories and ended up revealing Weighstin and far worse that is still undisclosed.
I’ve been looking for an analysis on this film for awhile and this was refreshing. I think you make great points and create an argument that shows the deeper truths of the film. I’d love to see a deeper, potentially longer, analysis on the film if you ever choose to in the future. Good stuff. And good use of Remo Drive.
The references are so blatantly obvious, made me suspicious from the get-go lol. The topless lady with the parrot, is from The Long Goodbye, then there's all the Eyes Wide Shut references (owl-lady, secret party, when the girl takes him downstairs to dance), when he watches the girl through the window, and then observes the girls by the lake, that's Chinatown. When he passes out from his drink, the Maltese Falcon. There are probably hommages in there to every major detective movie ever made.
Really interesting analysis. The relationship with art/artists given the current sociopolitical climate in the entertainment industry is a great point. How our culture is defined by people we would now say are bad people and all that goes along with that. Great video!
Yep and to add that’s why nothing is that simple or black and white. Because beauty can manifest from ugliness if that makes sense. Two random examples: Home is where you’re happy by Charles Manson. The Pianist directed by Roman Polanski (which was made and won an Oscar for best directing while he was a fugitive for fleeing from his sexual crime conviction)
This movie was so interesting to me, because the protagonist is written to be so unique. He's not a guy you would like at all, but you want to see what he will do next. His personality quirks mean he'll do lots of weird, questionable shit most people would NOT do in the same situations... Sort of reminds me of Jake Gyllenhaal's character in Nightcrawler, except Sam's creepiness isn't as obvious to everyone he meets, so he gets away with a lot more in the eyes of the other characters.
The most surprising thing about this is that its two and a half hours long. I watched it a few nights ago really enjoyed it. Did not feel like two and a half hours. I dont think he was the dog murderer.
You're the only one with the balls enough to say the word "suicide" in your videos. UA-cam wouldn't be so lame if more channels were like yours. You deserve more views.
There's so much going on in this film drawing from all kinds of areas that it is very difficult to pack it all together in a nice, easy to explain way. There is no ultimate solution to the film. There isn't supposed to be. Just like Sam, if you start digging into this analysis too much, you too are going to end up disappointed if you think you're going to get the big secret at the bottom of the well of what this film is supposed to be all about. Reminds me off some of Lynch's films. I think you can draw parallels with it to Blue Velvet. Both lead characters go on an obsessive mission of discovery after going beneath the surface of the community they live in to find a whole new world of bizarre stuff they had no previous clue about.
bet this is a treat the cabals give their sheeple: " oh you want to know about us? here is a little snippet for you, lmao as if it will change anything."

So at first I misenterpreted when he was scrubbing his face after the skunk incident. I kind of zoned out and thought he had blood all over his face, and she was holding her nose because of a nosebleed. I thought this implied that he was hiding a violent nature, but we were only shown the good parts or public face. This violent tendency is later confirmed when he kills the artist… Did anyone else pick up on this? Maybe I just haven’t seen skunk spray before because it looked red
after watching this film half of me felt weird and other half felt confused Garfield is a great actor but felt bad when he had these bad luck moments from the squirrel to smelling like a skunk to women barking at him ;/
so there are a few things I'm still confused about. Is Sam the Dog Killer? Were the dreams he had a sign of his mental illness? In the scene where Sam is in the bathroom, and he got his nuts kicked the ladies come in and start barking at him. Are they actually barking? or were they yelling at him but in Sam's mind they were acting like crazed barking dogs so that's what we saw. I feel like the answers are open to interpretation, but I still had to ask to get someone else's opinion. I think it's very likely that Sam is the Dog Killer, but I think it's also weird to include that in the movie if it has no connection to the main story. It's really not even hinted that he is the Dog Killer. He claims to have owned a dog that died recently at the start of the movie yet he got bit by a dog when he was younger so he says he's scared of them but then he's petting Sarah's dog and giving it treats and keeping treats in his pocket so he can pet and feed the dog when he sees it again. Very contradictory and doesn't make any sense. The end of the movie really has no point. Sam buys OJ and crackers, a combo that sarah said everyone has to try once before they die so I'm assuming he expected to be killed. He fucks the bird lady something that he also probably wanted to do before he died and yet the movie just ends with him standing on a balcony smoking a cigarette watching the landlord and cop in his apartment. My only interpretation of this is that nothing comes from finding the truth behind the conspiracy theory. Once you do life just goes back to normal. Sorry for the rant, these are just my final thoughts of the movie. any feedback on what other people think is Definitely wanted.
It's not Pike, it's Marx. I suspect the OP is saying that socialism is how we can stop people like Epstein and Weinstein. I disagree. Still I enjoyed the video.

You mentioned hiw he's mentallt unwell and possibly a bit disturbed. Considering the futility of learning everything he came to know, I think it's a telling testament to his general dysfunction that he would rather hyper fixate on a massive conspiracy than adress the problems right in front of him. He can tenaciously and sometimes cleverly sus out the inner workings of an interconnected elite conspiracy, but he does so because in his own life, he just doesn't know how to deal with the mundane issues of aimlessness, lack of meamingful relationships, amd getting rent money.

Im pretty sure that when Sam kills the 'Songwriter' he really was murdering the comic book creator. After that he falls into such a delusional state he puts together an entire conspiracy that he thinks he followed, but it was all in his head since he is schizophrenic. He is def the dog killer too. I think the Owl's Kiss was a new persona he took on to explain the killings.

You say Sam is a voyeur, but where could he look to avoid such an accusation? I suspect that the opening scene deliberately implies that Sam is staring at the two girls, in order to place us in a position of judgement for the rest of the film, which we see through the eyes of Sam's subconscious. Once we have seen the film, we understand that Sam's real obsession is cracking codes. And he is more than likely interpreting the morse code message, written on the menu.
