As always, a great topic to get us thinking. My grandmother who taught me to sew (many, many moons ago) would tell me there is a difference between a beautifully made garment and a garment that fits beautifully. That has stuck with me. When I start a new pattern, I look around on ravelry to see if anyone has made it and posted a pic of them wearing it. I find that by looking at that persons shape and the way the garment fits can help me figure out how I will need to tailor it for myself.

Lots of good and helpful information for any person who makes their own garments to consider. Especially the garment length changing to suit the other garments in your wardrobe. That’s a really good point which may not be thought of when making the first couple of items.

I don't knit garments, but I found this video very interesting. It will be greatly appreciated by those who do knit sweaters, having taken some of the uncertainty out of the process. Well done, Stephanie.

A lot of food for thought here, Stephanie, thank you. I am working on being more intentional regarding fit (of my garments) so this was educational and helpful. I appreciate the work you put into creating these musing videos.

This is a great subject to bring up. I struggled with sweater length until I figured out that I need to add 1-2" to the suggested length of sweaters to get the look the designer intended. So much of garment knitting is trial and error but having some good measurements goes a long way toward getting the fit you want.

Good advice!! I like how you style your sweaters and explaining how to find what fits best. My body shape is very different from yours, but with these explanations I can visualize xyz sweater with rst pants/skirt. Well, pants. If I had a sewing machine I “might” make a summer skirt, but…
    Thanks … food for thought!!
Spring is springing here, I want to dive into my first Ranunculus (90% Cotton 10% wool fingering wt). Swatch is a must, new to me yarn + best gauge… can’t wait!!!

Love the video Stephanie! I will admit that with the popularity of top down sweater construction I became a bit lazy with keeping to my numbers and also just reviewing the pattern before starting to knit it over the years since I knew modifications would be made as I went along. Over the past year or so, however, I’ve been more intentional about it and boy has it made a difference to not only the wearability of my garments, but also how well they fit. Thanks so much as always for sharing your thoughts with us! ❤ Mia

Very helpful video. I struggle with superwash yarn as this usually changes my length after wet blocking. I've tried steaming while I'm making my garment. Do you ever preblock in water before completing the ribbing ? I avoid superwash for this reason but I'd like to do better with it.

You're welcome! I actually prefer knitting garments with non-superwash yarns now because they hold shape better in the long run. I will steam block sweaters-in-progress to check length before ribbing but I don't typically do a full wet block before ribbing - you're certainly welcome to and it would help gauge fit.
