From this episode in the life of Abraham in Genesis 22:1-19 we will learn what he can teach us about the true worship of God.

Based on what biblical text do we know that Cain brought his gift out of obligation? I've never seen that in the text. Not that that means anything. I might have missed it, but I'd appreciate any clarification you are willing to provide. Thank you.

Yeah no obligation. It’s more like Abel did it diligently while Cain did not do it wholeheartedly.

Hebrews 11:4 It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.

@@brandongraphics7409 I appreciate your response, but it doesn't answer the question. I'm interested in knowing the references to Cain's motivation. Heb. 11:4 doesn't explain that. Nevertheless, it is still helpful, so I thank you.

@@ThienPowChong I realize your confusion however, acceptance of Abel's or Cain's sacrifice had nothing to do with their diligence or wholeheartedness. It had everything to do with obedience to the instructions of the sacrifice. Look at the Scriptures: Gen 3: 6-7. The issue is that Cain did not do what was right. Abel performed a blood sacrifice. That is what was required. Cain dismissed the blood sacrifice and used his crops. He did it his way. That is why God did not accept his offering but accepted Abel's.

If you're going to teach people about worship, you might at least start with the meanings of the Hebrew verb שָׁחָה (shachah), which appears 172 times in the Old Testament and the corresponding Greek verb is προσκυνέω (proskuneó), which appears 60 times in the New Testament.
You might also reflect on the fact that Romans 12:2 in the Greek text refers to λατρεία (latreia), meaning service, not worship, and is translated as service in multiple translations... Translating λατρεία (latreia) as worship leads modern readers to misunderstand Paul's intent - as you have amply demonstrated.

Yes, latreia represents service, yet so as not to limit the Truth about worship, Rom 12 1-2 only looks at the feet of the elephant and is not able to see the whole. Worship is central to prayer, service, reading the Scriptures, and every act of our lives. Worship is a response to who God is and what He has done, and everything we do can be an act of worship.
