    I've got (among others) a Metex meter bought around 1985. On 1 mA it will show 1,000 not 1,1. On a Weston Cell it shows 1,018 V without any calibration all these years. Now, that you can call a DMM! This one seems to have all the features apart from actually measuring electrical quantities.

    9V batteries are much less prone to leak however. Most use 6xAAAA, not button cells, so are double insulated. Lower drain mutimeters do fine with 9V batteries. I've seen so many corroded Fluke 189's for example - makes me sick. AA's and AAA'a are fine and all but you really need to keep a close eye on them w/ regards to corrosion.

    Thanks Paul. Yeah, I think that any newbies trying to get in on the cheap would be better off with two 8008's, even though I just don't trust using cheap meters. I don't like using them because I am always checking everything again with my Brymen or Fluke just to make sure the cheap meter is still working right, thus wasting time...lolCongrats on 30K!

      I have never used that brand before. Cheaper meters will probably be fine for most people using them for lower voltages and current. I would never recommend them in fear that someone might have the probe of the cheap meter explode in their hand someday.

  • @kostaskritsilas2681
    @kostaskritsilas2681 5 років тому

    It may have been able to measure low value resistance if you had put into a lower resistance range. Most DVMs have a threshold at which they will beep in continuity mode, usually in the 40 or so ohms and below. Because if its design, this meter has no way of determining if you wanted to do a continuity test or a low value resistor test. Putting it into a lower range resistance test would have told the meter to test resistance. You also couldhave done an AC test by putting the probes into a wall outlet.
    Doesn't mean its a good meter, but let's be fair in testing it.
    There are more meters starting to come out with the "smart test" feature.Thisone, the Aneng Q1, anf the new Aneng V7.

Just pulled it out to test a power adapter for my Jbl extreme 2 speaker and remembered there’s no settings or anything if I touch the inner tip with positive it shows voltage without even using the ground.. if I touch the black to the outside of the tip the unit just beeps. Not sure if the adapter (19v 65w) is kaput or this meter just doesn’t know wtf is going on 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hey, I have been watching a few of your videos on chips like the DS3231 and 74HC595N. I'm new to all of this arduino and electronics stuff but it's all very interesting and I'm getting really into it. Are there any basic chips you would recommend that I could get that I could play around with that provide different results? Maybe like easier to use than others that have a "real world" use in the home? For example, I've ordered a fingerprint scanner and I want to hook it up to a door lock for my 3d printer/electronics hobby room. I was (hopefully something like this is possible) going to setup the clock chip and only allow it to grant entry during certain hours of the day when I would be home. Anything that I could use practically and really anything that provides a bit of fun when finished putting it together. It's hard to not mass buy when eBay offers 10 chips for $1. I'd like to be a bit more precise with my buying though, if possible. lol.

    It's so difficult starting out, you'd be a fool spending serious money on the off chance. Cheap was perfectly fine in the old moving coil meter, nothing much to go wrong and usually pretty consistent even when wrong, if the needle moved you could infer what game the pixies were playing.
    Now when the micro pixies are controlled by a chinesium confuser you take your life in your hands.
    On the plus side the meter looks very sci-fi, like a tough transformer mask and with those pulsing green LEDs, probably looks sexy lighting up the bottom of a trashcan.
    It's a shame that the likes of fluke don't see the enthusiast's budget market as an opportunity to set people on the right track. A very basic SAFE meter should be possible at a reasonable price. A reasonably accurate, low voltage AVO for electronics and a tough indicator guy for electrics that won't burst into flames. Fancy comes later when you know more.
    If you want to test components, buy one of the excellent $8 all in one 9v testers. By the time you get the bug (or not) you'll be in a position to make an educated decision about what you need for yourself (which is the real aim). A good review tells you what's available and if it works but it can't tell you if it will "fit" and be comfortable.
