Something that I like that you pointed out was that John was somewhat happy that his dad was gone. I agree, and one can see it in the liberties he takes with his mother. The language of the book is a little bit confusing, but I’m not entirely sure Sylder was in the wrong. Killing the guy who just broke your arm, gave you a concussion, and tried to rob you (after you help him out) seems pretty justified.
