Thank you for bridging the cultural differences!
I really hate it when Westerners have such a self-superior and close minded mindset towards Chinese culture, especially the food.
Can't believe I didn't find you before, but I am now subscribed and have hit the notifications!
Thanks a lot Angelique. Hope you enjoy my previous travel videos. Lots of food from all over China. Let me know what you think.
I don’t think it’s superiority, it’s more fear based I think. Most western food you can tell what it is, but most Asian food you can’t always tell what it is straightaway and there it creates a fear of the unknown. Would it taste horrible? Is it going to kill me? What’s in it? They’ve never seen it before and they are not always adventurous enough to try things, just like some Chinese people don’t like Western cuisine. It’s difficult making that first step, especially the slightly older generation. Sometimes if they just allowed themselves to be a bit more brave and open minded, they may find things they really like, like Stuart’s parents. : )
@@ironguanyin123 "Would it taste horrible? Is it going to kill me?"
Why would you assume that people in Asia East food that taste horrible or can kill people?
Firstly, the robot part of the food court is incredible and definitely one-ups Tokyo
Secondly, exactly! There are Western athletes who love the food. So those who say the food is bad just have a different palate when it comes to cravings. One of the things parents teach their kids is to try new things. Well, if you give cuisines a chance and warm up to it, you might just enjoy it too
You are absolutely right. Sometimes you have to be brave enough to try it. Then you'll know if you like it. I used to shun blue cheese till an overseas friend brought me blue cheese and forced me to try it. Today I'm hooked. But unfortunately I moved to asia and he moved to Russia. No blue cheese mate.
they are journalists, you know :P
It's the Beijing Winter Olympics in China, not Tokyo haha
@@user-ze1pk6sl2v I didn’t say it’s Tokyo, I say it ONE-UPS Tokyo. Meaning the Beijing Winter Olympics are better than the Tokyo Summer Olympics. You mistranslated
Century eggs congee is also popular in China. Those small pieces of eggs inside congee is fabulous. When I was a student in Beijing, I eat it a lot. In my hometown, we also eat the century egg burried in Chinese vinegar. It is commonly served during CNY. As a Chinese who lives overseas, I envy those athletes greatly!
In English is Pi Dan, please, you should not call Ham as century meat or mummy. Century eggs sound disgusting, be respectful to food.
@@lokok7643 ??? I thought they're called century eggs in english. Chinese supermarkets even label them like that here. I don't know how its disrespectful. I call them 皮蛋 in chinese but I call them century eggs in English and no one finds a problem with it.
@@lyz0711 yes, cause English people knew Chinese people ”eat everything", "century egg" outdated, corrupt, disgusting color, it's rude to call food they don't have like that. すしis called sushi, not rice rolls.皮蛋 is called pidan, f** century egg, you eat century egg, you whole family eat century egg.😂

It's so lovely to see you clarify the Chinese food especial eating the eggs😂

司徒建国, please try 皮蛋 with Beer directly without any soy souce or whatever. I promise you will be amazed, you will get sweet taste every time back to your mouth which is really good. This is how I make my day in Europe
even as a Chinese who loves pi-dan (century eggs although an unlikable name), I've never had them directly. it has to be with soy sauce, vinegar (best Chinese vinegar) and ginger root (optionally chili pepper if you love spicy things).
Stu, have you tried 茶蛋?its my favourite breakfast when I visit China 😊
I have. I love it

皮蛋瘦肉粥 is one of my most favorite congee
Preserved century egg goes well with beer, actually if you have them together, the egg tastes somewhat sweet.
You found out👍
💐💐
If you eat preserved eggs directly, you should dip a little vinegar, because preserved eggs are weakly alkaline and vinegar can be neutralized, and then you will feel the freshness of preserved eggs. Of course, you can also slice preserved eggs and mix them with chili oil, soy sauce, vinegar, chopped green pepper, etc., which will have different flavors.
Omg! You ate the 皮蛋 like that? I admire your courage
There are always foreigners who eat preserved eggs raw. In fact, this is a misunderstanding. Almost no Chinese people eat preserved eggs. The preserved eggs are only used to cook porridge and stir-fry with peppers or other vegetables.
You sure? My family in Beijing at least used to eat those preserved eggs raw (and sliced) as a side for cold plates and wine-drinking.
pidan is quite often eaten uncooked, either cut into wedges or cubed, served by itself with granulated sugar with a side of slicked pickled ginger, or mixed with pickled toon shoots(香椿頭) and tofu with a sprinkle of salt and a drizzle of sesame oil. this is commonplace from Hong Kong to Chiuchow to the Jiangnan region. pidan added to lean pork and congee is added right at the end after fire is off. it is only heated by the congee's residual heat, never cooked. cooked pidan is usually in "gold and silver egg with vegetables" which is a very watery dish of blanched leafy greens with diced pidan and salted duck eggs.
what province uses pidan in stir-fry? is it Fuzhou cuisine? or maybe Changsha cuisine? i want to try that.
This may be a regional difference. In my hometown, people simply mix it with vinegar/soy sauce and eat it.
Where are you from? Pidan tofu is a very popular dish and so if grilled green pepper with pidan. You just need soy sauce and ginger as pidan is said to be a cold food and has a 腥 smell so ginger gets rid of it. I’ve never had pidan in a stir fry, but love pidan with pork strips and congee too.
EGGxcellent review,I give you🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚,五蛋好评
This salted eggs are suppose to eat with plain porridge.
Hey you are at Tuanjiehu 公园 good for you!
We don’t eat Pi-Dan directly. We add garlic, spring onion, soy source, chili, or smooth Tofu. We also use them for lean meat porridge.
Marinated implies uncooked. 卤蛋 is more accurately braised egg.
Vinegar is always the century egg-mate.
Century egg is supposed to use a little bit and mix it with rice porridge. It is a aquired taste, but overtime if you use it as flavouring its quite nice. If you compare it to Blue Mould Cheese, people eat it with bread, because the flavour/ smell is too strong.
Amazing video of the food provided. Love your content!
Thank you!
There's herbal egg. That's egg boiled slowly with herbs. Delicious on it's own.
Cook the preserved eggs before eating. The egg yolk will solidify. The smell will also be less pungent.
Thanks for this humorous video! I felt the pain when you ate the century egg - eaten by itself, it's not a pleasant flavour.
Wise words at the end there.
I don't understand why British food is joked about as being unappealing though.

Too funny….
Enjoyed your presentation. Esp the EGGsegment ! So funny! As overseas Chinese I Cant eat the century egg on its own, smell too strong. Best cooked in meat porridge.
Century eggs just have a stronger alkaline taste, you can add some soy sauce and vinegar to eat
Try tofu with century egg salad : preserved century egg + soft tofu +chopped cilantro or scallion + salt + soil sauce + sesame oil +老干媽香辣脆crispy chili sauce
you'll find the pungent smell of century egg disappeared magically.

Can we get the Menu about 678 diff foods?
Many special eggs of China are for rice cereal , not as the main dish. Foreigners just do not know how to enjoy them.
Agreed. In fairness though, I still can't eat a century egg. I just don't like them.
Western media will jump on anything negative about China, even if it's taken out of context or out of ignorance. Fortunately with so many athletes posting the truth their options are getting more and more limited
I'll take one of everything from the menu there. Thanks!

We usually eat the salted duck egg with congee.

Congee is also to be called rice soup, usually foreigners say so.
Great video and wonderful senses of humor..... Leaving the narrow-minded western reporters in the dust on their snacks review.

Very educational of Chinese food, especially all different eggs. Thanks Stu💕
In Thailand, they fry quail eggs in a takoyaki pan and serve with soy sauce as a street snack! It is also delicious and additive. You should try it if you visit Thailand! Totally agree about the culture differences in food.. When we first arrived in China, we also found ourselves having a bit of the food 'culture shock' but when we really gave it a try we end up loving them!!!
I was in Thailand a few years ago and came across a dish called Mango Sticky Rice. I thought why on earth would anyone eat mango with rice? Like you, I gave it a try. It winded up being my favorite dessert dish in Thailand!🤣 I even tried to make it when I got back home in the US. Came close, but not the same.
I love to try different foods as well :). Even something I don't like it at the beginning, I always give it 2nd or 3rd try. I've been doing so on a lot of food and end up loving them, lol. The point is, there are so many food, salad, eggs, soup, beef, KFC, pancake... you name it, and they compained all.

Many westerners do not like pi dan but its is good with porridge companion and soy sauce. And, it is NOT cheap. It cost me RMB 7 per piece in local market here in Jakarta!

Century eggs porridge is the best….yum yum…..yum
Watermelon is very expensive fruit in Japan and Korea. So this is very popular in Olympic village. Japanese athlete found that all Watermelonthe were taken away by Korean athletes. A few days ago, Korean athletes make complaints about the food in the winter village of Tucao, After they came to the restaurant to eat enough, then they bring all Watermelon to their dorm. ...hahaha
the food the way better than what offered by 2018 winter Olympic village there why Korean did no complain then? looks what is in Korean's historic menu ? pickled vegies and fish... nothing else in winter...
@Joseph Liu huh?
Hello Stu, I chanced upon your video, enjoyed watching it. Thank you for presenting the real China to the world. You are being objective and factual about food at the Winter Olympics. Will definitely check out your other videos.
Thanks Xi Shen. Hope you like my other videos too. Take care.
Welcome to China,
The heaven of gastronomic adventure 🔥
you should try century eggs with tofu, and add some soy sauce, green onion on it
You should try century egg with a dash of sesame seed oil and pickled ginger, they are really nice. Alternatively, have the century egg and salted duck egg with a bowl of congee. You will enjoy them.
An ex-work mate told me of his experience in Malaysia in his early teens. His father was part of the British Empire defence force based in Penang. My friend regularly found himself eating street foods dotted along the main street. Curry, fried rice, fried noodles, Indian curry puffs, Malay Sambal with coconut rice, etc. For a mere 30 cents, yes, then could buy you a meal. Paradoxically, his mother warned him repeatedly not to eat foods from the street hawkers for fearing that he could suffer from food poisoning. She was doing that despite the fact that her family had live in Penang for at least 10 years.
This really highlighted the distrust of Westerners on Asian foods. Perhaps there could be some degree of superiority complex in the mix too. I believe that it does require some degree of adventurism to try a foreign food. To reject it outright demonstrate one's lack of sophistication, and respect for others.
Well, I would not try anything cooked with insects or semi-formed baby animals or birds no matter how delicious they are!
And I am talking about some food served in my own culture.
@@wfireC I can go along with insects. In fact, grasshoppers are delicious deep fried. However, I wouldn't go near those disgusting bird eggs with half formed foetus. It is OK to be honest as long as it is not condescending.
@@WalkOverHotCoal I cannot go near my hometown favorite, silkworm! I don't think I can even handle its deep fried form even though it's probably very good. I just don't like bugs.
@@wfireC You got me all fired up, in the curiosity department. I reckon humans aren't too different to many wild animals in obscured tastes. The Romans fermented raw fish guts for at least 6 months to extract fish sauce from the rotting mess. The Vietnamese also have fish sauce made from rotting anchovies. The Chinese have rotting Tofu. The Inuits in Greenland has the Kiviak which is made of hundreds of dead birds stuff into a dead seal. The rotting mess is placed under a rock for 6 months. The Europeans have rotting cheese "processed" by live maggots for a period. Apparently the maggots do wonders to the flavour of the cheese. It is OK is be crazy with food, as long as you don't look down on other people's peculiar tastes or choice.
With an aftertaste of foot….man lmfao I think this guy doesn’t usually wash his hand after he take off his muggy ski boots or snowboard boots…and before he eats anything as well
Even among westerners, reaction to western foods differ. Some westerners love cheeses, while others loathe them. Some like jellied eels, others retch at the sight of them. China has a very diverse cuisine, from lamb kebabs and stomach from Xinjiang to braised sea cucumbers in Fujian. Not everything will appeal even to Chinese people of all ethnicities. There's no need to be disrespectful of other people's tastes as long as it's not downright obscene and evil (like eating brain of a live monkey so beloved by colonial types in Hong Kong).
Well said, you are so knowledgeable and know China inside out!
🌷👏💙💕👍
And ethnic Tibetans are not fond of fish-based meals
@@thisiskevin1000 but no Tibetans participated Winter Olympics.
Fair comment. But eating brain of a live monkey so beloved in Hong Kong? Come on, I am a Chinese citizen borned in Hong Kong when still under colonial ruled, I never eat this before so does my friends and family members. I can even surely tell you that is not a beloved food (actually extremely hard to find) by Hong Kong people and 99% of people in Mainland China will never eat this also. Hopes you sure to have concrete evidence before stating some special comment in the future.

Eating snowcakes out of your feet. I suspect he ate it with his shoes off in the dorm.
Shame on the foreign journalists who complained about the food.
it's quite alright to not enjoy the food, everyone has their own preferences. what's not alright is if they spin it into a racially charged smear, which for the most part have only been done by racist news media who did not go to Beijing, blowing smoke out of their ass like the DW newsanchor or the ignorant fools at Reuters.

Koreans complained about Beijing Olympics food which included KFC, Pizza and boycotted it. So do not eat KFC and Pizza back in Korea ok?
Chinese people rarely eat preserved eggs directly, but add soy sauce, green onions, chili peppers, slice them, and eat them with porridge or with rice.
In ancient China, the preservation of eggs was not easy, so various methods of marinating were used to extend the shelf life of eggs and increase various ways of eating.
On the other hand, European countries do not have egg-preserved dishes, but like China, there are traditional foods such as ham and sausages that preserve pork to prevent meat from spoiling.
Or soft tofu, soy sauce, ginger and spring onions, really delicious.
When you tasted the preserved or 100-year egg, you look funny.
Personally, I think the only use of Pidan eggs is to make Pidantofu, and that dish is crazily delicious.😂
The eggs are eaten with a mixture of minced ginger, cilantro, green pepper and soy sauce.
