I listen to Ohio on audio a year after it was published. It had a multi voice cast and it was fantastic. I’ve never forgotten it and it remains one of the best books I’ve ever read.

I just finished this book and found your video because I need to hear others talk about it. I picked this book completely on a whim, since I grew up in a town startlingly similar to New Canaan, even down to it's location in NE Ohio. I really connected to the political commentary, the characters, the tension and sense of mystery to the night. I'm really glad to find others loving the book as well.

Picked up this book after reading "The Deluge". After reading two consecutive dark books, I am going to read Chicken Soup for the Soul =)

I’m from this area of Ohio, and I think I have a copy in my TBR closet. Off to find it! Happy to see more books from my neck of the woods at any rate. 🌟

'patchwork quilt effect' is such a great term to describe this kind of book! I have it on my TBR from your previous video, really looking forward to getting round to this now

I am so excited to read this and I am requesting it from my library asap. It sounds like it could be similar to The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney. It has that same element you described where you see what the character thinks of themselves and then you see what the other characters think of them and how different that can be. I’ve been wanting to read a novel with that element again for awhile so I am glad you put this on my radar.

A book that I read in June had a huge impact on me ( like Ohio had on you)
Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart 🤩

I put it on my virtual "For Later" shelf on my library account rather than reserving it, because I've got 15 items out already and I'm going on holiday in a couple of weeks. I definitely want to get to it before the year is out!

Ok, so I saw this thumbnail when you published the video right around the time that I was looking for a new book to read.
I didn’t watch it as I was like, I’m going in blind!
I bought it on my e-reader and was immediately like ok this is not classic Mercedes’ territory (for me that’s historical fiction, coming of age, about a girl, usually written by a woman)
I’m about 20% in and… it is a slog! It’s taking me ages to read as it’s quite dense and as you say it opens in a way that is quite manic. I guess I’m feeling a little befuddled by it so have come back here to get the tea on why you love it so much as I am close to DNFing.
I’m glad I did as it has definitely encouraged me to continue and I now understand that the vibes I’m feeling about it are similar to what you have mentioned here.
I guess I’ll report back probably in about 12 weeks at this rate!
    Thanks Mercedes’!
    ❤️

Haha, yeah, it's not my usual territory at all! I agree that the first chunk is the hardest bit to read in terms of the character voice but I still enjoyed it. I get why you could think it is a slog though. It's a pretty unlikeable perspective to read from. Hahaha, I really hope you enjoy it more when you get to the other POVs :)

@@MercysBookishMusings so I finally finished it last week and I am thrilled that I persisted! The ending had my jaw on the floor and the following day when I was finally able to pick it up off the floor it went right back down there when I finally put two and two together as to what that package was! I understand what you mean when you say this may be a “great American novel.” Thank you for recommendation, i will 100% re-read this in the future!

I had been wanting to read this for a while and this video finally convinced me. I just finished it and absolutely loved it, one of the best books I have read in a while. I read a book over 10 years ago called The Delivery Man that I really enjoyed and reading this book made me want to revisit it and I think you might enjoy it as well. It sort of has similar themes to Ohio but takes place in Las Vegas.

That sounds amazing. Have you ever read Philip Hensher? I’ve just read The Emperor Waltz and absolutely fell in love. I’m going to do a full video review because more people need to read it, Hensher is a magnificent writer.

I'm reading a book that sounds similar. Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. Set in Ohio and lots of s.a. and dark themes. I have Ohio so I will need to prioritize it.

Definitely reading this soon! Sounds right up my street. When you immersion read this what speed did you have the audio on? I always struggle to find the right speed for that.

    • @MercysBookishMusings
      @MercysBookishMusings  2 роки тому

Same! I think I ended up at 1.6 which is slower than I usually listen but I think I read slower when listening too.
