Nice information about something I never knew
I read yesterday that you can place the hides in a dryer,no heat with tennis balls and run and the balls will do the work for you.
I've heard of this but haven't tried it myself. Let us know how it goes if you try it.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. I have a (roadkill) fox pelt I have just processed. First time for me so I have no idea how to soften the stiff skin. What else would you recommend I use instead of plastic pipe? Would a hard edged piece of timber work? Thanks
Hey Anthony! Awesome work tanning your first hide! Anything with a hard edge and a strong constitution will work.
Can we use an electric sander and then a hot iron to loosen the fibers?
Cute Aussie... thank you for the tips! Breaking my deer hide tonight
I watched this entire video too.
I just did a deer skin last night. I tried to soften/break on a frame but it was so thin it kept popping the lacings. I ended up using a stake I'd recently constructed. Basically a 4 foot 2x4 with a chisel point. I placed it near my woodstove and worked it for about an hour until dry. It turned out well and would taken many hours to dry outdoors at about 40 degrees ( f). I do use pvc pipe for my fleshing rig. Vast improvement over my wooden one.
