This chorus has always been my favorite from
St. Matthew Passion. So much sorrow and pain,
but the hope is always present...
    Lyrics in english:
    We sit down with tears
and call to You in the grave:
    rest gently, gently rest!
    Rest, you exhausted limbs!
    - Rest gently, rest well. -
    Your grave and headstone
    shall, for the anxious conscience,
    be a comfortable pillow
and the resting place for the soul.
    - rest gently, gently rest!
    Highly contented,
    there the eyes fall asleep.

If it wasn’t for Mendelssohn no one would ever know of Bach’s brilliance.

    • @yosevoaken6957
      @yosevoaken6957 3 роки тому

Too bad Mendelssohn's father disliked him for being a Christian and told him that he would never be a "real" Christian, that Christians would never accept him and that he should change his name and embrace Judaism because a Jew can only be a Jew. Yet Mendelssohn rose to fame because Christians were his biggest fan base. His father was a real creep and his rants about Christians were utterly vile.

A lovely recording from Engelbrekts kyrka in Stockholm. This year Bachs Music gives a further and deeper dimension in Stockholm since the city a few day ago was the target for an evil destructive terrorist. St Matthew Passion was presented in Sweden for the first time in 1936, just at Engelbrekts kyrka. As far as I know David Åhlen was conducting, Waldemar Åhlen at the cembalo and Åke Åhlen conducting the boy´s Choir and finally Oskar Lindberg at the great organ. All four important muscians in Sweden practicing at that time and remembered for ever. But most of all, my honour to Johann Sebastian BACH for giving us so much of ESENCE OF LIFE.

wasn't my intention to offend anyone :) I love them BOTH. I...Mozart respected Bach's genius and of course learnt from him, just as so many other composers...But I wouldn't say either that WAM was inferior...they are just different. If you understood my comment the right way, you would see that it was a recognition of Bach's influence on late Mozart's works. :)

Save the Italian masters Palestrina (Missa Papae Marcelli) and Vivaldi (Judhita Triunphans) ... Despite the Venetian style (which Bach did not master in 1727) these cantatas are tedious and may have been copies of Italian opera oratories and Italian recitals translated into the German and attributed to Bach!
