  • Here is my Review on the Alpha Beast! Hope you guys dig it. For me, its a good knife but not anywhere close to my favourite and I think for the price, there are a lot better options out there. Mainly the Tach 2.

    I'm biased towards BRS, but I figured I would clarify a few things about the AB.
    The "hole pattern" wasn't designed for the purpose of being a pattern, as much as it was made for control when flipping. The chevrons are at the center of gravity, and your fingers sink in there when flipping (control on rolls, etc). The slots remove unecessary weight from the middle of the knife, to make it weight biased toward the back of the handles. Again, this is for rollovers, and adds speed to them.
    As for the blade, on BRS' old website they used to have pictures of early 3d-designs of the AB. The blade was slightly different.

    I love the 51's latch. It's gated so that it doesn't come into contact at all with the handles whilst flipping. That's an A+ in my opinion. Haha

    I didn't see it until you called it "the head". I appreciate how immediate your decision was to changing the label as soon as you said it and saw it. had me laughing...still has me laughing.

    Good comment man! Its definitely good to flip an AB and see how it works out for you. I think that youll like the Tach 2 though and I hope it suits you well.

  • @CalviNNation

    Thanks dude! And I want to make sure that everyone knows as well that these are just my preferences. You have to flip it to really know if its for you. But I hope to give some flippers who are similar to me, some good thoughts.

  • @antsfire1259

    the 51 is a really good flipper but if you want a little heavier flipper you can get flytanium handles both are more available than a alpha beast or replicant

  • @CalviNNation
    @CalviNNation  11 років тому

    Well again it depends on what you like. The 51 is harder to control but will twirl a bit easier and fanning is a bit easier i find. The Tach 2 will destroy it when it comes to rollovers while keeping fast twirl speed and comfort. I would save for the Tach.

  • @CalviNNation
    @CalviNNation  11 років тому

    I should have mentioned that I probably only rate the 51 as a number 2 because i got it so long ago and flipped it so much and know how to keep control and speed. If I had owned a 5oz bali before the 51, My ideas may have been different.

  • @CalviNNation

    Sandwiched handles allow for more opportunity for good balance properties and weight distribution.

    @georgijBROADCAST you do not need loctite for a pinned balisong. There is no where to put it either. If your talking about screw type pivots, use the search bar on Calvin's channel.

  • @Entrycut
    @Entrycut 11 років тому

    The blade shape is kind of a reverse tanto type blade that is used on the Higonokami knives in Japan. It looks like that is where they got the inspiration for the blade from its almost exactly the same.

    I'm a fast flipper too, I love my 51. Been flipping for like 6 months now and you can flip your AB faster than I can flip my FittyJuan

  • @CalviNNation
    @CalviNNation  11 років тому

    youve forgotten the point i made thousands of times. Its all about preferences. I am sure you can flip it as fast as a 42 but personally i like the comfort the 42 gives me while being able to flip fast and controlled. Preferences dude, preferences. also another reason why i like the tach cause it gives similar control and speed but 100 dollars cheaper

  • @SpringLatch
    @SpringLatch 11 років тому

    I believe the Alpha Beast wasn't designed for the looks of it. It was designed for a balanced Bali. I agree with the latch getting stuck. The finish on the isn't good. Mine came with deep scratches. And I agree with it being hard on your hands also. I'm polishing mine and thinking about rounding off the 3 edges of the handles. You made some good points. I am a slower flipper that's why I like it. But my 42 is still my favorite flipper.

    And that was the answer i was looking for. Since all the flips i learned were from you and FKE, i've become one of those seed demons. I'll be getting a tachyon soon i think.

  • @Flipzone999

    Calvin, thats a great review, but i think the blade looks great! It has a really natural look and i think kz and loosey designed it with that idea.

  • @CalviNNation

    It was just a Temporary trade. I will be getting my basilisk back. I would never trade my basilisk for an AB though.

  • @TooMuchFlipping
    @TooMuchFlipping 11 років тому

    True. It's pretty hard to find. As for me, I think I'll stick with the 42 custom. And I was wondering Calvin, how is life treating ya? Winter hit my area pretty hard and with you being a couple hours North of me, I figure working construction must suck.

  • @CalviNNation
    @CalviNNation  11 років тому

    Well the Tach may be a nice Compromise then. A bit lighter but some of the Same attributes as the AB. I would think the AB is similar comfort as a Kimmy

    i like the T2 more than the AB at first also. because it is easier to flip and more comfortable. but after months of flipping both i decided that the AB is actually way more capable than the t2. you can do a lot more with a tank than a lamborgeni. nowadays I've retracted all previous statements and declare the AB to easily outperform the t2, which doesn't even have real spacers.

  • @VfletchS
    @VfletchS 11 років тому

    I really dig the blade, so, as you said... to each his own. I've had an AB on pre-order for months. I think I'll have to order a T2 now as well. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

      TheBlkpeople I would strongly suggest that you look into Flytanium 62x handles. They extend the 6x series to 5.5 inch handles, and make it 4.6 or 4.7 ounces. It basically fixes the problems that the 6x series really have, at least when they're available.

    Hey, I never said I was the best. Im amateur compared to alot of you guys. And did I ever say the 51 was better for balance than an AB? Heck NO! For what I do, The 51 is easy enough to control while keeping up great speed. I agree that the AB is better than the 51 for everything in regards to rollovers. It just depends on what you do, and what Kind of comfort you like. And the 51 isnt bad, come on man. I can appreciate both.

    Even though I like slower flipping usually I feel the same way. I wanted ABs for so long and finally bought 2 premiums the same day and when I got them I was just like.. "oh great.. back to my Kraken".. loll Sold my purple AB but keeping my Venom cuz its mint and with the bowie blade it is lighter and flips nicer but still uncomfortable kinda...

  • @HollowPsyche
    @HollowPsyche 11 років тому

    How would you say the comfort compares to a Kimura? I do really enjoy flipping my Kimmy in a slower fashion with more technical aerials, as opposed to anything else, but I have that comfort issue with Kimura's pretty massively. And one point about slow and methodical flipping...sonofthebong. Very technical flipper, but so damn fast and smooth. xD

    I bought a bm42 for $450 and i am not happy for the price i paid. The bm42 has a lot of blade play. The blade rubs with the handles and it's noisy. The first bali that i got was the AB, followed by the bm51, kimura, replicant, bm42 and hom specter. My favorite flipper is the hom specter. My worst is the kimura.

    • @Pandemos
      @Pandemos 9 років тому +1

      +Son Goku Specter is sick, I'm a proud owner. Jerry makes a great knife. I highly dislike it's latch (looks good, but gets stuck and unbalances an otherwise flawless design), otherwise it's about the best bali I've ever flipped. So smooth, so balanced, so SHARP. Are you sure the BM42 is real, btw? I think it's an average knife and is the "standard", but when you can get a Specter for $430 and an AB for $370...$450 is a bit much. Have my AB 3.0 in the mail right now. Looking forward to it, but agree...I dislike the look of the blade. I get it makes it top-blade heavy for incredible chaplins and rollovers, but it looks like they just chopped it out of a blank without refining, crowning or making a swedge. That's all extra $$ if you want to send it back in, and I hear they do a really good job on the "mutants".

    • @airtec87
      @airtec87 8 років тому

      Man I really want a spectre, I like the alpha beast but its kind of heavy.... and it hurts to flip it after awhile. Also I was dissapointed that the spine isn't crowned, even though leading up to the 3.0 release people said it would feature a crowned spine by default compared to the previous versions. Oh well still a good knife. I still flip my 51 more though, its basically my trainer because the edge is so dull after a year use ha.

    I just said that The AB is far far better for Any horizontal, momentum based move. Im not sure how much more you want. I just like the speed and the "Medium" Balance of a 51. The 51's balance isnt Absolute shit. nor is it Amazing. Remember how many times I mentioned Preference? This is mine. Also Saying Childish doesnt make it personal. I think Its a simple blade shape. Its too easy, Something anyone could design. And again. I said maybe BRS loved how it looks. So They can do whatever they want.
