This is one of my absolute favorites. Seems this song gets overlooked but definitely deserves more attention. Obviously no one got booted out of the literal car but the general sentiment of the chorus perfectly expressed the end of my marriage years ago and so this really stuck with me. (And it's also just an amazing and passionate song which is par for the course for MB20 and Rob on his own as well.)
@I say shotgun, you say wedding [TFM] the OP commenter was saying that the chorus fit his marriage even though there was no "literal car to be kicked from".. he wasn't meaning the song itself but how it fit his situation.
Actually this song is literally about Rob getting kicked out of a car when a girl broke up with him. Saw it in an interview with him once. Makes the song that much better.
Haven't heard this song in over a decade, then while.heading off from work 4 lille words of melody pop into my head " while you were sleeping" and here I am happily going down the matchbox 20 rabbit hole...
Just three miles from the rest stop And she slams on the brakes She said I tried to be but I'm not So could you please collect your things Well I don't want to be cold I don't want to be cruel But I gotta find more than what's happening with you And if you would open up the door She said While you were sleeping Well I was listening to the radio and wondering what you're dreaming When it came to mind that I didn't care And I thought hell if it's over Well I had better end it quick or I could lose my nerve Are you listening? Can you hear me? Have you forgotten? Just three miles from the rest stop And my mouth's to dry to rage The light was shining from the radio And I could barely see her face But she knew all the words that I never had said She knew the crumpled up promise of this broken down man As I opened up the door She said While you were sleeping I was listening to the radio and wondering what you're dreaming When it came to mind that I didn't care And I thought hell if it's over Then I had better end it quick or I could lose my nerve Are you listening? Can you hear me? While you were sleeping Well I was listening to the radio and wondering what you're dreaming When it came to mind that I didn't care So I thought hell if it's over Well I had better end it quick or I could lose all my nerve Are you listening? Can you hear me? While you were sleeping I was listening to the radio and wondering what you're dreaming When it came to mind that I didn't care And I thought hell if it's over Well I had better end it quick or I could lose all my nerve Are you listening? Can you hear me?
I was in a totally domestic abusive relationship when this album came out, shit 20+ years ago,and this was my go to song! We all have the strength to get out, we just got to do IT❤️
I never like this when it was first released. I was 33 now im 56 it finally growed on me and i think its a masterpiece. Im glad i can actually listen to this and not be so judgmental.
I swear Rob is the best lyricist of our time. The band has great musicians, Rob a has a great voice, the production and subtle touches are always on point, but the lyrics of their songs just blow everything from the last forty years right out of the water.
Also, if you love MB20 as much as I, I'd highly recommend buying their VH1 Storyteller DVD. Explains where a lot of their songs came from. 3am? Written about Rob's Mom! Just a suggestion. #Matchbox2020
Rob Thomas is a massively underrated musician.. he could convey a message through music like few could ever do.
Agreed
He's world famous. How high are you wanting him to be rated?
Are you sure? He's a 3 time Grammy winner and SC Music Hall of Famer. I think the world knows exactly how talented he is lol
absolutely agree
Oh I agree❤❤
This is one of my favorite songs from this album
"But she knew all the words that i never had said, she knew the crumpled up promise of this broken down man.."
That hits deep.
Songs like this is why this is my favorite band

This is my father's and my go-to whenever I would accompany him on one of his truck driving routes, growing up.

Most underrated song of the century!!!
Just three miles from the rest stop

Nah. This was written by Rob Thomas, inspired by a personal experience he had in Florida with a long ago girlfriend.
Also, if you love MB20 as much as I, I'd highly recommend buying their VH1 Storyteller DVD. Explains where a lot of their songs came from. 3am? Written about Rob's Mom! Just a suggestion. #Matchbox2020
