Was brought up in EK and remember even when the Plaza was built in the 70s. Its changed so much but like many town centers not looking so good these days with so many vacant shops. Well done for how you handled being asked to stop filming. You remained polite and courteous when many would have become rude and aggressive. Top man.
I was born in nearby Rutherglen and lived in East Kilbride until I was three and a half, when my family moved to England, but came back with family at least once a year and we regularly visited East Kilbride Shopping Centre. I loved ice skating and going to the cinema, and also shopping
It's a dump now. Lol. Most of the shops are shut up. It used to be vibrant, busy. The food court is shut, world buffet away, handmade burger away, sainsburys, debenhams away. Its turning into a ghost town, even at the weekend it quiet. Used to be packed at the weekend until about 10 years ago. Bloody shame.
True, it is 💔, was a fab place to grow up in an the centre used to be buzzing, also not just Sainsbury but the loss of M&S food too, if you don't drive, don't have a car an are elderly, those were a great loss to people without cars sadly
@@Jana-om4bb yeah, I remember way back in the 80s, lol. Used to be a great centre and when the Olympia first opened. Not just the centre but the surrounding area was nice too, when SLC was EK District council and the area used to have a bloom competition because it was all kept nice with flowers right along from the the roundabout etc. Used to walk down from the top of the Olympia on a Saturday looking down , it was like walking on Buchanan street. Busy. Now, its sad. Such a shame.
I don’t security guards they can be horrible and intense brilliant video I like it 👍 this is my favourite store I loved ice skating when I was a wee boy
Such a shame they stopped the Video left EK (Born there) in 82 sometimes you get home sick and come across people like yourself posting. what your hometown looks like now Thanks (and well handled with Security)
Someone films the shopping centre to put on UA-cam subsequently advertising the centre to wide audience of potential visitors and new shoppers to the EK shopping centre and the management need to ok the free advertising. Unbelievable.
The law says you can film there without anyone's permission, You're in a public place and even though it's privately owned it's publicly accessible. As the law stands there is no privacy in public and we can film anything we can see even private property as long as we are on public property as long as we're not causing a disturbance. It might be against the shopping centre's policy to allow filming without permission but their policy does not trump the law.
Stayed in EK for decades up until very recently when I moved to Stonehouse which as anyone who knows the area will be able to tell you is kinda like East Kilbrides Beverly Hills.
Had some great times in EK. I thought the centre was really good. I don't remember them charging for parking there but, it has been 18 years since my last visit. I understand it's now looking a little more desolate since this video was recorded? You could have continued filming in there but, not worth an argument and the security was at least polite.
I live in EK and don't shop there due to the parking charges - On principle - Pass it all the time and the car parks are desolate. The majority of the shoppers would come from EK and give the shops trade. Charges were a bad move. It's not just the charges it's all the hassle involved. Pity.
Kev ….I have stayed in EK for a long time …..the People in charge of all the centre car parks should be ashamed, to charge people for these car parks is a disgrace….. I know people from EK that travel to Silverburn or even Braehead rather than pay for soaked floors of EK they just don’t get it ….. No wonder all the best shops are closing there….
I'm pretty sure you should be allowed to film, I've seen plenty of people do it. Speaking of Security, they once tried to say I was someone else and told me I was barred, so that was something. Centre's a shell of itself compared to years back.
They charge for parking because the shop centre owners don't own the car parks, apparently the parking land, etc, it's owned by a total different company, hence the charge. Also, the security coming to ask you to stop filming, what a joke, they should encourage people to come and promote the place that has turned into a lot of charity shops, poundlands alike and a lot of empty premises.
Place is an absolute shambles of a place. More units empty than occupied. Even the McDonalds is gone, wtf?! Olympia mall is a shadow of its former self. They killed it stone dead with parking charges. The whole place is reminiscent of East Kilbride itself. A has been place that's been allowed to decay into squalor. The kindest thing they could do to the whole place is level it.
I have brought up 3 children in East KIlbride and would consider it a great place to live. Like everywhere else it has suffered from lack of investment. Despite all its still the place to live.
@@tormid100it's easy to consider it a great place to live if you've never ventured outside. It's a tip and it made me sad coming back after 7 years of living in Auckland

The Food Court has not shut. It is further down the bottom now.
@@gillianmcmichael2763I remember when you got a bus at The Cross. Not many benches, so you sat on the low wall, or the bottom bar of the railings 😀
I remember it from back in the 70's, I can still recognise the layout, but there's a bit more under cover now :)

I think there's only 1 restuarant left at the ice rink. Like the rest of the town centre empty units
That was great Kevin. East Kilbride shopping centre is worth a visit.
KEV THIS LOOKS LIKE A NEW MALL
Top bit new Jon pity I didn't get to show you all of it
Love this and great to listen to that Glasgow accent. I have never been to E K.Mall but next time I’m home (hopefully soon) I’ll make sure I go.

I wish East Kilbride could have a 10 pin bowling alley like it used to as it’d be easier to get to if I ever wanted to go
I would absolutely love that as I love 10 pin bowling
@@Jana-om4bb yeah I do too In fact someone should start a petition for bringing a 10 pin bowling alley back to East Kilbride

I have been going to EK shopping centre for years! How did i not know there was a bingo 🙈
lol
grow up in ek left 10 years ago what a difference in a place
The outdoor section at about 6:00 has Olympia Pets. Best pet shop in the town and established for several decades. Talking parrot & everything!
💚🐇🐴💚
Thanks for the video, shame it got interrupted, this PC world now, its relentless, but good job
I remember before any of that was built.
I love this place

Stopped shopping there when they started charging for parking - no brainer

Growing up in EK when parking was free used to be so busy in centre. Place is so run down now
Grew up in EK. A lot has changed in the mall. Cannot believe they charge to park, and have to get permission to film. Management must be a joke.
Everything is now gone from that end

You can film anywhere you like it's not north Korea
Seen a couple people I know in this video

Still some bams wearing masks 😄😂😄
Kevin sitting in Cleopatra 3rd floor looking into Peoples beach bar very hot
Enjoy !
Place is a dump now, will be houses in 5/10 years time
That's why the owners are running it down - increases the value of the land.
The reason i left E.K years ago was because of the shit you had tae listen tae at the end of your wee video, you shoulda gave him a severe Malky.
Needing permission to film a video is ridiculous.
Permission to record in the centre... what a joke. No wonder the place is run down. Bored security guards.
