I'm one of those people that you meet who say's he's Irish and I was born in Swinemuende Germany in 1941 but I lived in limerick and Kilkee from 1946 until 1963. I was raised by my Irish Grandmother as a child at 27 St. Joseph Str. and then later at 55 Thomas Str. I also lived in beautiful Kilkee and went to school in Kilrush for a wile but Limerick was always my home base. I made my 1st Confession, 1st Holy Communion and Confirmation in there. It's the place in the World that I miss most.
I remember the old man at Shannon airport when I left Ireland in 2002 who said: "So you're leaving Ireland, Ireland will miss you." It's not Ireland who misses me, but me who deeply misses Ireland and especially the wonderful people from Limerick, the charming bus drivers, the wonderful kids in my neighbourhood who taught me to play Hurling, the chatty bartenders and Limerick radio that played "Waltz around Limerick" at night. We all should go "home" to Limerick at least once in a lifetime.
A city which has been really hard done by the media.. But I'm guilty of believing it too.. I'm a Dublin man who visited Dublin for the first time only a few months ago and fell in love with it.. Its got the best pubs in the country, friendliest people, unlike Dublin the streets aren't littered with scumbag drug dealers/users. I can't get to Limerick often enough, and find myself here looking at her sights and wishing I could make a speedy return.. Lovely city, Limerick be proud.
It's so nice to see it looking so well. That's my Limerick!
