This is kind of why I think the movie wasn’t all that huge back then. While yes, it was _successful_ in a technical sense (making back $12 million more than its budget), it isn’t that well remembered and didn’t last that long in the limelight of popularity. Why do I say that?
Advertising and timing. This commercial alone proves that the advertising didn’t suffice for the movie. Silence of the Lamb’s trailer was artsy and unique, while this is just simply refers to reviews (said reviews consists of comparing this film to other thriller movies and saying “A very good thriller, it is”) and name’s of actors. Silence of the Lambs gives you a spine tingling yet vague description of what to expect, while this commercial simply shows clips from the movies with generic violin music.
Next up is the timing. This was a generation already populated with so many thriller and horror movies. The mid 90s was about the time when thriller was dying out slightly in popularity, though not in abundance. A couple years after this film’s release proved fruitful for the thriller/horror genre. At the time this might’ve seemed like another ‘scary movie’ that audiences were already exposed to a thousand times since the 80s, hence why it melted into obscurity. Even Sigourney Weaver said that this would’ve been an extremely popular movie hadn’t it been for the timing.
Now, just to clarify, I think that this movie is still pretty good. It’s not Silence of the Lambs levels of quality in my opinion, but still an amazingly made movie with heart, passion, mind, dedication, and technique. The weight of its reputation just didn’t bare as much as its production, but popularity doesn’t always mean that a film is good or bad. Just look at Twilight. This is like the reverse Twilight: a high quality film with low popularity.
