You could contact Derek at Vice Grip Garage on UA-cam. He rebuilt one with his Dad as a kid and just bought it back. He would be classified as close to an expert as you will find. Just a thought.

Just a small suggestion... When looking for metal parts (flakes) drain through an old style metal food strainer, and attach a magnet to the side. all the crap will go through and all the metal will attach to the strainer. you can even pour gas over it to give you a better view.

If pulling valve covers, I would put some oil on the top side of the engine, on the valve train and down the drainage holes of the heads. Change the oil and filter again with an oil additive. Don't give up on it yet.

Rods don't knock very long before they come apart. But solid lifters can knock for years so check the adjustment first. Runs smooth for a 65 yo engine!

The early hydraulic lifter Buicks and Oldsmobiles were noted for lifter clatter . If it has good oil pressure and you don't hear anything in the bottom end , it's most likely lifters or possibly fuel pump . It's doesn't seem to be missing so camshaft is probably ok . Keep changing oil and filter to clean out engine . Also you can short out one cylinder at a time and see if noise goes away to see if it is a rod .

What did the compression check reveal on the cylinder you were looking at? You didn't say. You said the first passenger side cylinder was 115 and then you didn't mention the rest just saying that you had a problem with the last passenger side cylinder. I presume it was a low number? Piston top can look bad but cylinder can have compression if rings/cylinder aren't damaged. What were the compression figures for the passenger side cylinders? Some things justify a rebuild, some don't.

I don't get it. You just show people a detonated piston(and that's what caused it, somebody running it on low octane fuel or had the timing too far advanced) and they still leave comments like water pump, fuel pump pushrod, timing chain, rod bearing...basically anything else that moves. No....it's the piston that has the crown burned away. When you hear that diesel-like sound from a gas engine you can nearly count on it being a piston moving around. Keep in mind that in '56 there were different compression ratios between Dynaflow and Syncromesh(manual trans) engines and between Specials(like that one) and Roadmasters. Your engine should have heads and pistons for 8.9:1 CR but I can promise you it's been rebuilt already with who knows what.
P.S: you don't have to rely on a UA-cam "star" to advise you on Nailheads. Just obtain a copy of the 1956 Buick service manual...the one that GM printed in 1956, and it'll tell you everything you need to know about it. Good luck.
