WOW, my brother and I were literally having this same conversation this weekend and both said a home is not an investment, it's shelter. And if we knew what we know now would do things a lot different before purchasing a home. Great post.
I agree. I also like that my house is paid off. However, I wish it were smaller and cheaper in the remaining carrying costs: property tax, homeowner's insurance, heat, electric, dual zone HVAC, roof ... I would like to downsize since we have some under utilized rooms, but my wife does not.

I’m glad my mortgage will be paid off when I retire. It will save me almost $1500 a month!!
