This is why I always examine my heart whenever I feel like giving more to my church than the usual 10% I contribute. I want to ensure it’s done out of love, gratitude, and willingness, not out of expectation or the hope of matching what God blessed me.

David, what would’ve happened if David still went ahead and built the temple out of love for God? Would this be considered disobedience?

Yes, that would have been disobedience.
Even though we may want to do certain good things for God, we are not be be self-determining in our actions. here were times when the Apostle Paul wanted to go to certain areas to preach the Gospel (that was a good desire), but the Holy Spirit forbade him from going.
We can read about that in Acts 16:6-10
6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in [a]Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the [b]Spirit did not permit them. 8 So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
      Hope that helps! Blessings.

Why did David think that it wasn't right? What was the basis for David to think in this way?
David may have the heart for the Lord, but he was inherently still the seed of Adam, that was corrupted. What is this corruption about? Was it not the serpent who spoke about being equal to God?
So this chapter 7 started to tell us that God had done great things for David and Israel and they had entered into the rest that God provided for the fallen humanity.
But David being inherently corrupted thinking that he was equal partner to God. This is the core of sinfulness thinking that we are equal to God. God scratches our backs then we scratch God's back.
The conversation of God to David through Nathan and David's prayer show us that David might never had understood that he was never equal partner to God. Yet God up the game to tell David that God will do far more than this rest from all the enemies in the future. God will build David's throne for eternity. Even if David were to build God the temple, imagine what God had responded to say that God will build a throne that last all eternity. In another word, God wanted David to get the message that David will never be equal to God. David was called to rely on God and follow God. Stop the delusion that we mealy man can do anything for God.
Bad seed cannot produce good fruit. Only good seed produces good fruits. David and all of us come from the seed of Adam that is corrupted. We can never produce good fruit. Only Jesus is able to produce good fruit.
David's prayer perhaps illustrated that he never get this message, but rather demonstrate that he thought more highly he ought to be.
The application is to stop thinking what we can do for God, but rather to acknowledge that we are from the bad seed and we can do nothing good, and to trust what Christ had, is and will be doing for the saved.
Romans 12:1-2 teach us to stop trying, but offer up your bodies as living sacrifices and stop doing anything, but rather renew your minds and follow Christ.

Good theology here but the exposition is forced.
