Penny’s Big Breakaway Review in 59 Seconds

- It’s clear that 90’s Sega is in the team’s DNA. Penny is loaded with bright colors, random items to collect, a whimsical story (all the way down to you fighting an army of penguins), and an even more whimsical protagonist with a magical yo-yo. More importantly, the design mantra of the game about speed and combos with hints of Sonic and Jet Set Radio, as you chain moves together.

Did you own any Sega Consoles?
Nope
But by mother did
which ones?
@@VDGMS a mega drive
I had a mega drive so I can see the similarities including to Sonic Mania which they also created
I own two mega drives still. (Both model 2)
Saw 1 bug my whole play through - deserves a 9 at the very least. Team built their own engine. Design is unique and charming.
Yeah the custom engine is pretty impressive for a new studio. What platform did you play on?
I saw many bugs , mostly collision related.
I saw many glitches, but they just made me laugh because of their absurdity.
Played on Switch! 😊
@@heyitsrance Fun fact, not sure if you know this already, but if you not only put the game on the new performance mode but set your Switch's internal resolution in the system settings to 720p instead of 1080, the Switch version runs at a full consistent 60fps without drops (normally the Performance mode is inconsistent between 60 and 30 at 1080p). This game's visual style makes the resolution difference not really matter so it's a great trick to do and fixes the complaints people have had with the Switch version's performance, making the experience even better and match the bassline that the other versions have!
Game desperately needs a patch for its copious game-breaking bugs, but is still an absolutely wonderful time
A patch or two would likely fix a lot of the issues.
I think they have fixed some of these by now
Fr I clipped out of bounds at least three times by accident 😭
They must have fixed the bugs. I've been playing it for over a month and haven't run into any bugs.
@@SKvldlfNope, just bought the game yesterday to try it out and sadly there still seems to be some bugs during gameplay. (Mostly already noted in this comment, out of bounds glitches and stuff.)
8 seems fair. It's a game that'll outshine its score due to how unique it is, anyway.
Lots will love it, despite its flaws. There was lots of potential left on the table. Most scores I have seen are between 7-8
@VDGMS it only came out more recently. Just give it time.
It’s really fun, but it almost seems like an extremely long demo. I have the feeling they might be reusing this engine, and this is just a first step for the team. At least, that’s what I think
What a great review: you break the game down into its origins and elements then out it together again! That is the standard all game reviewers should meet! Well done!
Thanks!!!
If they patch out Penny getting stuck in a wall while the penguins surround, I might get back to it more seriously.
I wish we could look around with the stick instead of the dpad, and I get why they set yoyo to work with stick, and there isn't that much to see if you could spin the camera around, I imagine, but it just feels awkward to, say, a Spyro 1 fan such as myself.
I didn't know you could even pan the camera with the D-Pad until this comment tbh
There was another bug where (spoiler alert) on the penguin carpet in the finale, after all the penguin rolls, if you lean a smidge too far, you fly off and have to restart the whole thing. There was another where in the restaurant level (world 4) one of the parts where it’s a yo-yo ride drop, if you’re close to the wall, you’ll fall off.
You actually can move the camera with the right stick if you put your controls in the "Simple" option, the default controls are the "Pro" option.
Saw Dunkey playing it and it looks phenomenal
I think my version of the game is accidentally 2x slower, because when I see gameplay on UA-cam, it’s blazing fast. But when I play. Penny’s 3x slower, and all momentum is just… bad
might be your monitor refresh rate!
Thank god for someone finally telling the truth i LOVE this game but would have gladly paid 10 bucks more for some clear quality of life improvements
I went back and forth between 7.5 and 8, but when this game clicks, it’s really great. You would’ve paid 10 bucks more and I gladly would’ve waited a lot longer for it to be released. Lots of potential left on the table at release. The high highs definitely outweigh the low lows. Thanks for checking out the video. Did you own any Sega consoles?
@@VDGMS at least i know i can look forward to their next project or a sequel 👍
loving this game
Fun fact: This game was actually made by the devs of Sonic Mania
What a fun & fantastic Game!!! The amount of momentum you can build up is WILD, of course you have to learn how to build momentum. You can’t just push 1 button & go at max speed like sum other Games 😆
What a cool new IP from a awesome Dev Team &
I haven’t ran into any bugs on the Switch version
Fun game! A couple of minor bugs.
Is this any good on switch, i haven't upgraded to ps5 yet but i love the look of this game
I played on the Switch. It doesn’t have the same high frame rate as the other systems. I believe it’s 30 for the gameplay on the switch. I played mostly in docked and it felt fine. The issues with the game weren’t Switch performance related. Just some buggy bits that get in the way of the super fun times. Long story short, if you want to buy it, Switch is a fine place to do it!
I play on pc, and it’s kinda more bland colours and slow. Amazing for the middle of the night gaming, but horrible if you just drank a Monster energy
I've known this game properly for less than a week but it is already my favourite. Everything you say holds up, but it just has much more of an edge. 9.5/10, I hope it gets more appreciation in future. Maybe even a franchise? I'd like that very much.
Penny's Big Breakaway is a great game and its a shame more people didnt talk about it when it was released.
I never thought too much of this game at first but a couple days ago i saw the trailer and saw "from the team that made sonic mania" and sonic mania is my favorite game of all time so now i am legally obligated to buy this game
My top 10 game of the year ❤
I think visually the game 99% of the time looks great but they still have instances of z fighting. Also the cutscenes really couldve used a better budget because theyre not very animated most of the time, I think in one of the cutscenes I literally saw a stay pixel on penny. Also I find it weird that the denizens are all robot guys in the gameplay but are all different in the cutscenes, maybe its an optimization and time thing since they have so many outfits? Idk
I think we are looking at a budget thing. The game was shadow dropped, and it's clear that it could've used more polish and refinement. I have to assume that the studio is aware of this and thought shadow drop was the best course of action because reviews might have not been as ideal as they wanted and they had a fair amount of hype due to being most of the team that made Sonic Mania. At a point you have to start generating money and release the game. I think that's what happened here. It was the studios first game using a brand new engine they created and a new IP. The game is still loads of fun when it's working, but a little extra time would've made a huge difference I think.
This game totally rocks. I've been playing it on the switch, and maybe it's been patched since I got it but I really haven't experienced many bugs at all. The bosses are meh, but the levels and movement design more than make up for it. It's the first game in a long time that I've felt the need to 100%, and I've been playing it quite a bit!
I don't know why people like this game so much. It has nice ideas but visually and the package as a whole is nothing outstanding to me. 7-8 seems a fair score to me tho.
I can fully agree, some people do seem a little high on this game, but that’s the beauty of gaming or any medium really.
I dont see Sega at all in this, i see a combination of Mario 3D Land, Glover, and a bit of Chameleon Twist on the N64
i think its more like NiGHTS than jet set since NiGHTS was all about chaining combos
Wait for a sale
Penny’s Big Breakaway 2 is gonna r0x0r our s0x0rs off! ❤️
I can see that!
