For road trips these things are fantastic. I've used mine since 2018 and although I usually bring a backpacking tent as well. As for the MPG issue, I have mine mounted on a below roof height rack on the back of my truck. No noticeable effect on gas mileage.

I just took a 3,800 mile trip to watch the eclipse and it worked out great. When I got tired I would pull off in a rest area set it up and go to sleep. The hardest thing is closing it up, getting all the flaps tucked in and zipping the cover back on. I have it on a 2019 Ford Ranger crew cab and it is mounted on the bed CAP and I haven't noticed mush fuel economy drop, .5-1 MPG.

IMO if you are not using this type of tent at least 30 nights a year (a lot of camping), it's not worth $3,000. Of even less value is the new Thule version which folds up into a box shape and stores across the rear of your vehicle, mounted to the trailer hitch, priced more than $4,000. If you are really attracted to this style of tent camping (out of an SUV), I'd rather look into the style which folds up like a normal tent and stores inside the SUV, but folds out to make a larger tent combining the bed of the SUV with a larger tent attached to the open rear of the vehicle. This gives a much more useful, all-weather tent.

The up and down motion is there because the ladder was not set up correctly. And when you put enough weight on it for long enough, the tent gets damaged, and potentially the mounting structure.

I would much rather descend a latter to piss, than by default have to dirt nap my tent on the ground. And any rain whatsoever and it’s an automatic mud bath. A wild animal is much less likely to rip my throat out while I sleep if I’m up a ladder. An animal isn’t gonna lift its leg and piss all over a roof tent. And whether it’s pissed on or not, CLEANING a dirt nap ground tent compared to one that’s always up off the ground is night & day. I can also fully clean & dry a roof tent while it’s up, but I see a problem with cleaning a huge tent ON the ground when I usually clean things BECAUSE they have been on the ground haha. You don’t have to stake roof tents down. LMAO and who can’t climb a ladder drunk??
Yes, say goodbye to tenting in extreme weather with a roof tent though, unlike a Hilleberg tent that is fine even in a hurricane. That’s the main negative for me. So in a violent storm I would be forced to lock things down and rough it in the car. I’m taking that trade off with ease!! For me, the smaller the ground tent the more likely I’d be to buy it (because I think of the nightmare of cleaning it). A Hilleberg Staika is on the small side, but if you gotta clean it it’s gonna seem humorous!! The Staika’s the largest one I’d ever consider (but you can’t even find the inner mesh for sale anymore and it’s pissing me off).

Other cons: high centre of gravity, more likely to rollover when offroading, worse handling around corners. heavy weight needs crane or two people to install/uninstall. Can't enter a lot of parking (shopping, office, hospital etc.) with 2.1 metre height restriction. Very loud (hearing damage) wind noise at high speeds, especially in less insulated vehicles like jeep wrangler or toyota hilux/tacoma.
Only useful for people who regularly go camping or overlanding (time saved adds up quickly especially with hardshell roof tent) and are ok with the many drawbacks.

Because of inflation, if I could drive to other places(city for vacation), and if there would be safe parking lots, where I wouldn’t have to deal with crackheads, I would use these to save money, probably could save a good 900 - 1500 an trip and could squeeze out more weekend trips a year.
