Was there at the Emirates tonight: Lewis-Skelly really impressed me tonight, looked really composed and intelligent. Also didn’t catch his name but the 47 playing at CB looked very promising! COYG!!
Bloody love you James. I just need to put it out there that this Arteta team is exhibiting all the aspects of what makes Arsenal truly a great club on and off the pitch, and I could not be more proud. We are living through special and extremely exciting times to be a gooner.
Agree with the Nwaneri shout. This team is well drilled, experienced, solid structure. It's the perfect environment to drop a young player in, especially one who looks as talented and mature as Nwaneri.
US Gunner here - totally agree, it is great to see the academy and fringe players in the league cup games, they are fun and it gives one perspective. Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly look ready for primetime, but hats off to Jack Porter who got his first pro start! We all dreamed to play at this level, man, if that is not a shot in the arm - perhaps Arteta had no other available goalkeepers, but that lad got the nod and he delivered
I noticed the team were very deliberate in not passing back to Porter which must have been on instruction from Arteta which I thought was a great caring move if so
I was behind the corner flag sitting behind Kiwior and I thought he was fantastic in the first half, cleaned up everything. Not so great in build up play, as we know. But defensively, won headers and challenges, I thought he did alright personally!
I always look forward to carling cup r3 for precisely the same reasons, I just love to witness the Hale End boys in first team environments. We've been denied that recently, pleased we got it this season.
Add a "yum yum yum" swag xD right up there with "les do dis" and "goodly morning". The house will come mate. I've got 4 kids, can remember the days of my wife and I in our first flat together with our new baby. Things are tight, keep working, one day at a time, the house will come.

04:32: "Guys, I need a house" Wrighty rubbing it in your face with the name of his Pod :D Great showing today. Now is the time for these youngsters to come through and shine: to alleviate the workload on the senior players for the league and UCL. I completey agree with your point "If not now, when?". This team is on an upward trajectory, still. These players need to get in the draft of that trajectory and rise with the tide, so to speak, otherwise we run the risk of never being able to accomdate a youngster.
Great game that, feels a while since we had a game like that in an early stage where we get to see the youth players. Felt like a wenger game! Lovely to see so many kids get their debuts. What a night for them and their families
🔴 Great performance from the boys. Needed that after the nonsense talk of "drak arts" - Ethan looks ready to me and is a super talent, raheem looked sharp. Rice was good. Mls was good! On to leicester. 🔴
I see your point about Nwaneri but I still wouldn’t start him vs Leicester. He’s doing really really well but there’s a massive jump (an entire league)between Bolton and Leicester. Keep starting him in the league cup games and if the opportunity presents itself bring him on in the second half. Slow and steady wins the race, especially with kids that young.
I think Arteta will have observed Pep Guardiola's cautious and gradual integration of Phil Foden at Manchester City and look to replicate that, rather than drop him into PL starts just yet.
Must say, I was there last night and I thought Kiwior had a good game. Some fantastic cross field passes. Tidy in possession. Solid in defence. He was actually doing a lot of the marshalling which was interesting to see. I could actually see him getting some changes in midfield later in the season.
MLS played LB this evening but he is a 6/8 and is the reason we didn't replace Partey/ Jorginho. He will be the replacement in a year or two. Absolute baller. Nwaneri has the attention but MLS is equally as good and is also ready to explode
We've been noticing how Raya has faced and had to save more shots compared to last season"s averages, and at the same time, the attack is still yet to click. This Bolton match showed how fluid our football could be with the right right 8 playing. I hope Nwaneri starts a few matches now, and of course Ws from them.
I’m still hoping we will see all our left backs play together. Tomiyasu at RB, Kiwior playing right CB (as he did last night), Caliafiori LCB and Zinchenko at LB
I think it was in the 62 min where Jack made a mistake and his pass got cut out by a Bolton player. Not one player blamed him. Calafiori who the pass was meant for applauded his attempt. I love that. Young players will make mistakes and especially at 16. I hope he develops well and we get a great player. My thoughts on Gab J. , dude just needs to simplify his game. It feels like his trying to do too much.
All well and good Sterling "being a good mover",, but woe betide the ball drops to him in a *critical* movement in the future when the inconsistent touch, pass decision, bad dribble or wayward shot makes a difference. fingers crossed.
Love the show James you have read my mind Ethan is more suited to play the 10 than anyone else in the team and call me daft James but Myles can play the lb better than anyone else. The kids are alright.
Great content as always, James, but I'm not quite sure why you keep insisting that Havertz played the last few games as a midfielder and Trossard up front - it was clearly mostly Trossard in midfield and Havertz up front although admittedly the roles weren't quite as rigid as when Odegaard would play
Did anyone else notice that Jesus didn't celebrate a single Arsenal goal? Not even a smile or a fist pump. He's not in a good place mentally right now.
@@themikelee What about if he's four feet away? What is the ideal congratulating distance to be from a youth player? It's been so long since I've seen or cared about one scoring a tap in at Arsenal. My actual answer is Jesus was probably hoping the Sterling ball was coming to him. I've also forgotten the whole game instantly so that might've been another goal. I also don't care.
Given that he isn't likely to get many minutes at left back and he plays there for the national team, is there an argument for playing Zinchenko in midfield?
🔴 James, Rice is NOT a 6! He doesn't play the 6 the way Arteta wants to play it. Mikel plays him further forward for a reason! Partey plays the 6. because he makes vertical passes consistently and takes risk where as Rice makes lateral and safe passes. Rice is a destroyer and Mikel doesn't want a destroyer as his No. 6. Mikel got rid of Torreira for that reason and upgraded to ceballos who is ball playing and then to Partey who is better all round. So this Rice talk of No.6 needs to stop because it wont happen. We will sign a no.6 when Partey and jorginho leave. 🔴
We may supplement Rice's hesitance to be vertical by adding someone else to that middle phase in build up. We've done that before with Zinchenko or even Ødegaard. Merino may also help in this regard. We will find solutions. Rice in the 6 can work for us.
Rice is a 6, and will be in that position in future. You're right that his passing isn't at Partey's level yet, but it doesn't mean he can't do it. He is being coached to improve on it, and will be comfortable with making those penetrating passes from deeper in midfield over time just as Rodri had to adapt when he joined Man City. He has been playing as an 8 because we didn't have a player that was comfortable to replicate the role Xhaka had while offering his level of physicality and defensive discipline. For now Arteta is keen on making Rice work on his all round game because he is useful in both roles. But Rice's superpower is what he does as a 6, otherwise as an 8 Arsenal have/can get better options.
@@pgikiru I think you can either pass or you can't. Its not something that you can just randomly learn. Rice is 25, you have to remember that Rice started his career as a centre back and not a midfielder and it kind of shows. I disagree that he can learn to do it. You either have it or you don't and I believe he has other attributes that are much better and those attributes are best suited in the role that he is currently playing as a box to box. I believe Merino will provide competition for Rice and a No.6 will be bought in the summer to replace Partey and Jorginho. Rice is a good player but he is not a no.6 that talk needs stop!
@@TshiamoTati I disagree! The fact that we have to move pieces around for him to thrive in a 6 is further evidence that he cannot do it the way Mikel wants it to be done. I guarantee you we will buy a 6 and Rice will not play there. Rice slows down our game when he plays there. Mainly because he passes sideways and doesn't have the range of passes in his locker specifically vertical passes. We saw it during gbe first half of last season when we were not clicking and also with England at BOTH the world cup and at the Euros's.
@@naseibonsu8120 Rice will instinctively choose the safer pass. in truth, He does his best work as a 6 in a double pivot. He will largely pass it sideways even after driving forward with the ball. We can help encourage verticality but it's not coincidence that our midfield improved when we put a passer in there to help him. We have already moved pieces to help the team and we can (should) do that again. he can pass but unless it's switches out wide he's risk averse. Merino and Odegaard more vertical.
James, I know you're a full-time journo but, if you could find time to put a little more into the channel, you could offer paid membership, which I would happily pay for.
Nigeria better go try convincing Nathan Nwaneri to play for the senior National Team NOW, before England uses him in qualifiers and then dumped for main competition, ultimately ruining his national career.
Wow I see it so differently. Jesus plays so well as either right or left 8 (defensively better than Saka and up there with GM and way better than LT & RS). In possession I feel it’s his body letting him down but his willingness to run /work for the team has not diminished
@@alexbelotti1603that’s harsh and objectively not true. His close ball skills and pressing ability are quite good. The guy just can’t finish consistently and you can tell that it gets into his head very quickly and affects his whole game. Impact sub, not a starter against the better sides for sure.
Ethan looks great. I would advise to chill out on Ethan Nwaneri. Kid doesn't need the undeserved attention or pressure yet. Let him settle in and Arteta integrate him more frequently. The youth quality is there for emergency and also investment for sales moving forward.
