2023 Wheat Harvest and Planting

  • Here is a very disjointed video outlining our wheat harvest this year. My goal with the wheat is to experiment with the viability of growing wheat on our homestead here in western Washington. Wheat isn't known to grow well here and many farms around don't grow it for that reason. I'm growing Maris Widgeon wheat, this variety is supposed have a better chance at growing in a cooler wetter climate. So far it has done reasonably well though I would like to get better yields.
You will notice in the video that I was in a hurry to harvest the wheat before the rain. I didn't get any usable footage of me cutting the wheat so we are stuck with what we have. I only did a minimal winnowing because I just turned around and replanted everything that I harvested. I now have roughly 200 square feet planted and ready for next year. Here is hoping for a good harvest.

Good morning from louisiana! I harvested my first Luffa's this week. I'm excited to have my own homegrown sponges!

Hello! I have tried luffas with a little success in Idaho but I haven't tried growing them here in western Washington because I fear it is a little too cold. Luffas are really fun, and I'm glad you have had success. I hope they treat you well.

I'm glad you find this interesting. I have been really curious about growing my own grain and I am gaining new appreciation for the effort it takes to grow what you eat.

I did this a few years back for a couple harvests (also in the PNW). Maybe a 6x20’ patch of hard white wheat straight from the grocery bulk section. The winter wheat did much better than the spring wheat as there was less weed competition. Threshing is no joke. I used a weed eater for that. Ideally you have something like a galvanized tub and weed eater. Then a commercial fan for the winnowing. Less peaceful but much less labor. 😅

I've never heard of using a weed eater but I see how that would make things a lot easier. Do you remember how much wheat you were able to grow on that 6'x20' patch?

Unfortunately, I don’t believe I ended up weighing it out. The winter wheat did pretty well though. Far fewer bare patches. No need for irrigation or weeding or anything.

@danielshepard No worries, I'll see how my next patch turns out.

nice to see another video from you! as much as most all of what i do with gardening is just for aesthetic & eco restoration, i am intrigued by the idea of growing some type of grain for fun, for some reason i feel inclined to try flax for once (know nothing about that but oh well) because it would be hilarious if i could make even a string out of the fiber

Thanks! We'll have to see how long my video streak lasts. My plan is to make them as they come. Flax would be really cool. I don't know much about growing it either other than the fun videos I've seen from time to time and the odd mention of it here and there. This is one of my favorite videos on flax.
