Hello, thank you for listening to our music. I hope it gives you some joy and pleasure.
I am pleased that you have discovered our music through this medium. I view this experience as the equivalent of previewing a record in a record store in days of old. However, if you wish to experience the music in its' fullest form, I would strongly encourage you to acquire it in a physical format you can bring into your home. Not only will you then be able to experience the richest version of the music sonically, but you will also be afforded the opportunity to enjoy the tangible artwork, which was conceived in tandem with the music, and serves as a further portal to experiencing the total conceptual and spiritual and emotional content of the work we have labored, lovingly, to bring to you.
I love you,

This album is pure genius. Swans were way ahead of the times. Great band, great music, insane album.
I always come back to this track & this album. It's raw, dark, primitive , pummeling, cold scathing blistering primal aggression & relentless anger to the listener's eardrum. These guy's were the innovator's of groups like Godflesh's album Streetcleaner & other dynamic bands. Really great stuff.
they sure were ahead of their time because there is literally no other music from 1983 that sounds like this.. if anyone knows better, I want to know
I don't know the exact dates but many things ~ a whole genera known as 'industrial', & also some 'experimental' music. 'Unfindable' things like 'Demi Urge' & others. & no I don't mean the 'black metal' one from 2003 Google sez... something else. It was varioius construction equipment sounds put together in a musical way = very heavy! =)
@@SimMaster sonic youth
@@SimMaster the birthday party
Nothing compares to early Swans. Its the realist, scariest music ever created. None of these black metal, grindcore, etc. bands come anywhere close to this raw, unfiltered expression of emotion.
fu....ng true! the same thing i already thought in 1983, do still thinking it. and i love extreme metal stuff.:-)
All the best metal bands point to Swans as a major influence.
@@markuselipka I once asked Henry Rollins (I met him several times over the years) if he could recommend anything "as heavy" as Swans and he responded "there isn't really anything. It's pretty ultimate stuff!"
I listen to a lot of death metal and grindcore, but this is without a doubt the most brutal, unpleasant, grating song I have ever heard. The only things I can think that are on par with this are Napalm Death's peel sessions or Sonicrime Therapy by GISM.
Disembowelments- Transcendence into the Peripheral, Infesters-To the Depths in Degradation, Close to a World Below- Immolation, and Gorguts - Obscura are examples of music that are far scarier and malevolent than this album. This is a great album but this opinion that you hold shows a lack of sufficient knowledge in the extreme subgenres. No offense.
For some reason, I can picture the entire album being played on a very gritty, dimly lit, abandoned underground gym.
Ooo Gustavo Cerati nice
@@jordannietos thanks ❤️
Exactly. Like Apollo Creed’s gym in Rocky III.
fight club music
That's not far off from the kinds of venues they were playing in when they started out
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. It was like someone discovered a way to tap into a repressed, buried part of my emotional core and expressing it in a pure and beautiful way with music, in a manner that the most aggressive 'metal' music could never capture. It's ugly but honest, like admitting that your girlfriend isn't that important to you outside of your physical needs. I discovered Swans about a decade ago, in a particularly dark time in my life, and no band has ever been the soundtrack to my inner life in the same way since.
They have a way of capturing the disgusting nature of humans in a way that no one else has.
Recommend listening to Manowar then.
I had a similar experience when listening to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum for the first time, which coincidentally, were influenced by Swans (hence why I'm checking them out now). I would give them a listen if you haven't already.
@@otomauth That's a hell of a band name
RIGHT?? Early Swans is like the band did a deep dive into their more disgusting emotions and feelings. Unlike a ton of other music it offers none of that emotionally sappy or empathetic feeling - just pure, undiluted ancient-reptilian-brain-aggressiveness.
The fact that this is the same band who would go on to make soundtracks for the blind is insane to me
there is no discernible melody here --- and none required. Primal visceral brutality. Instinctive and intense. This is as raw as it gets.
I hear a definite melodic direction on that bass
No melody? Swans was always about melody.

Have you ever heard meshuggah?
@@concars1234 it's minimal chromatic movement. Its there, it's 3 notes. Honestly it feels like the art in this is there is none by which can be described as intentional. But I think he did that just to be like "alright, it's fuckin music now, you happy?"
I am in awe this album exists. Swans were ridiculously ahead of their time for 1983 and this sounds highly influential in heavier music later down the line
the double bass grooves in this whole album is just so metallic and gritty and dark. fucking love it.

Solid alarm clock tune
When you're Swans and you pioneer industrial metal, sludge metal, art metal, noise metal, alternative metal, avant-garde metal, grindcore, and grunge. All in one fucking album...
That’s a little too far fetched lol
when you're james guillory and you are wrong
This stupid. There is nothing 'metal' about Swans, and even if there were I'd say Killing Joke pioneered "industrial metal" and most of those other genre on their first album. The only one with a grain of truth is grindcore, but only insofar as members of Napalm Death said they came up with the term "grind" to describe the sound of Cop-era Swans... but nothing about the actual sound of Napalm Death would make someone unacquainted with that statement stop and think, "wow, this sure sounds a lot like Swans!". I get Godflesh, especially early on, was basically Swans worship, but again I'd say Killing Joke (and even Ministry tbh) beat Justin to the punch on the industrial metal thing. And yeah, the Melvins are Swans fans (you can hear it a lot in Crover's drums IMO), but they're hardly a band that can be pigeonholed into any one genre themselves. Flipper (who Gira auditioned for) were more progenitors of things that would later get labelled sludge and grunge more than Swans were.
How the fuck is this grindcore?
Metal is for teenagers
Definitely see where Godflesh got some of their influence. Hell yeah!!

When a band was releasing amazing shit like this in 1983 and they release a fucking masterpiece all the way over in the 2010s, you know they're on some next level shit
This sounds like a song that would play in a sort of dirty, rundown, gritty, shittily lit, illegal gym and fight club that’s in a underground basement below a equally shitty cheap bar or pub. Full of shady people, criminals, biker gangs, thugs. Alcohol pungently attacking your nose. The walls full of mold and rust. All the electric lights constantly flickering barely staying on with dirt smeared over the broken glass and flying insect guts. Same with the walls.
“The smell of dried blood. Dirty, bare footprints circling each other. That aroma of old sweat like fried chicken. The feel of a floor still warm from a fight the night before.” -Jack, Fight Club (1999)

In this situation, all i can do is embrace the fact that I will get absolutely fucking destroyed. Slowly and painfully as the crowd surrounding the both of us cheers on and laughs maniacally.

Goes to show how timeless swans is
this shit doesn't even sound that it is from this planet or that it came out from our times ....
Agreed
More like late 80s (Godflesh).
No, it sounds like the 80s. There was lots of absolutely insane, genre-defying stuff during that period like Laibach, Neubauten, No Trend, Coil... everything since then became a lot less free and groups tried to pigeonhole themselves into genres and work backwards. I think the 80s was more or less as intense as it ever got for anything vaguely "rock" related (not that all the aforementioned were, but Swans most certainly were).
