NOTIFICATIONS MISSED? read this: I have now found out the following. When I import a workout from TrainingPeaks to the Apple Watch and then start this TP workout (with the TP app icon), I don't get any audio notifications, only the intervals are shown by vibration and on the display. However, if you call up the TrainingPeaks workout and then scroll all the way down, you get the "Add to App Training" function. If you do this (you can then set indoor or outdoor) and then start the training from the training app in the "Running" section, you will also get all the audio announcements about the interval times and whether you are above or below the current pace.
That missing target page is the main issue I have with the Ultra right now. I wish there was a page that shows the target for the next segment and what step of a repeat you’re on. Seems like it could be an easy fix, but I’m not sure Apple will address this.
Man… Apple could totally dominate the fitness watch space if they wanted to…however, it’s half-baked ideas like this that keep the competitors in business. If apple would pay ANY sort of attention to the main benefits of their competitor’s products (battery life, training and recovery metrics, race/pacing tools, etc), they would understand the importance of putting these in anything labelled as “ultra” and targeted at athletes or people who do more than pay for their starbucks every day….
Spot on! I was a die hard Appleist until I got serious about endurance training. Have an Epix Pro now and perfectly happy, but would have gone Ultra if it had the things you mentioned as well as Ant+ support.
I mean I’m an ultra runner and use Apple Watch Ultra just fine for 99% of use cases. Including 50 mile unsupported mountain runs. I don’t use most of all the garmin features and don’t know really anyone that uses anything beyond the stuff Apple also provides. Does AW need updates? Absolutely. Is it only good for “Starbucks” crowd? Certainly not. I don’t think Apple is looking to take over the 2 week battery life requirements crew.
The Apple Watch Ultra has been out for a while now and it still surprises me that so many people don’t actually understand its target audience. When people talk about how great their Garmin’s are at health tracking, they forget to mention how crap it is as an actual smartwatch. It cracks me up when people talk about switching between multiple watches because the Ultra is not for people who have already decided to own several watches. The Apple Watch Ultra is the best pure smartwatch on the market with good enough features to match a dedicated sports watch, and the new TrainingPeaks integration is another step in that direction. Yes, you can get better sports watch features from other products, but you are compromising on the smartwatch capabilities that Apple is known for.
So I will get a structured workout with targets transferred to the AW (pace, heart rate or running power) for my run, but no feedback during (Gage / Notification etc.) or even after (like execution score)?? Thank you very much for the review!
Great video. The one thing I noticed as well is the lack of a target after that first notification to "Work". Also wish we could rename that so that the target is displayed in that large text. It's a bit small on my series 7. Overall though, this is great. I haven't touched my Garmin Fenix 3 since my 70.3 event and a few of the really long workouts leading up to it. Anything up to 3hrs I use my Apple Watch for all of it.
Not showing the target for a segment is such a huge oversight! The design assumes you are going to be looking at your watch or be able to look at it within the 1.5 seconds the zone pops up, actually be able to read the tiny text while on a moving bicycle, and memorize the lower and upper limit for the duration of the segment. Definitely feels like a feature they designed at a desk and never tested on a road.
Boy this review was… kind. It feels less than half baked and I am not really sure how much is on Apple’s shoulders to fix. With all he money Apple has I am sure they could hire people to implement this properly. Hell they could buy Garmin if they wanted to without it making a dent on their bottom line
I have an Apple Watch Series 7, I installed the latest version of iOS, watchOS and the Training Peaks app, however when I upload the structured training to the Apple Watch it only shows the distances or time of each stage of the running training (outdoor, even before starting the workout), not the pace, although a pace zone is determined in training peaks. It appears that it does not upload this pace zone. Does anyone know how to solve it? Or is this because pace upload is only available for apple watch series 9/ultra?
Great video! I'm curious if there are any updates on the issues you covered. I'm a Garmin Fenix guy, but learning about Apple Watches for my triathlete and runner athletes that I coach who are having problems pairing and such. By the way, which heart rate strap pairs best to Apple Watches to recommend to them to purchase? Also, what method do you use uploading data after runs to TP from your Peloton Tread? I like that the distance is more accurate on my Tread vs my watch 'Treadmill' mode so I upload both and then delete the Tread info from my Strava since both upload. Then I adjust the distance on TP to what my Tread showed. I just wish the Tread showed the elevation gain and changes during the workout.
So my TP workouts have average pace targets for different intervals (warm up, work, cool down). Let's say target for warm up is 10 min mile x 20 min, work is 9 min mile x 20 min, cool down is 10 min mile. The problem is apple watch seems to average the pace over the whole 50 minutes when telling me I am above or behind pace - meaning I have to actually run an 8 minute work mile to average 9min mile during the second segment for the watch to tell me I'm meeting the average pace target for the middle section. Is there a way around this? I can tell my setting my view preferences within workout on the watch that my "current pace" and "average pace" have to be very different for the TP app to accurately tell me when I am behind or above pace? Any advice of how to tell apple watch to reset the "average pace" clock with each interval on TP?
I can’t get my TP calendar to sync onto my Apple Watch. I have all the settings exactly as you do. When I look at the workout entry on my calendar and click on the watch icon next to “Workout Details” only new connection is available and not my connected Apple Watch. What am I missing?
Thanks for this. How does Training Peaks / TrainerRoad / Final Surge /Custom Workouts API enabled apps compare to Garmin Suggested Daily Workouts? I just switched to Garmin with HRM Pro from Apple Watch for running workouts, but this seems tempting. Thank you.
So to be clear. You create a workout in TP, then when you are ready, you bring up the workout on your watch, complete the workout, then it's synced with TP and then you can compare "planned" vs "Completed", correct?
I really want/need a review of a home cholesterol meter. There are a number of them for sale but they are all so different in price I worry I not taking something into account. There are a couple approved by the CDC but they are cheap and brands I don’t see anywhere else. Suggestions?
Hey Brother…google is returning nothing so I only know of one guy to ask. I haven’t had my Nike Apple Watch for several years because you sold me on Garmin. I have some heart health that I might want to track with an Ultra or Ultra 2 but I cannot determine if the Ultra series functions with the Nike app integration of the Nike series Apple Watches. Do you have any insight to does the Nike Run app function on the Ultra series? AND, can the orange button be mapped to begin a workout in the Nike or Strava run app? Maybe you would know. Merry Christmas!!!🎄
This is what (structured workouts) I wanted in first place from Apple Watch Ultra ( Like Garmin or other fitness watches ) from day 1, now I have to create accounts with other third parties 😂
How do I get my Apple Watch Ultra to stop alerting me with the power metrics you talk about in the video? I hate that my watch is constantly vibrating/alerting me that I am above or below power metrics, but I don't know how to turn that off?
This is a feature we have had for years on Garmin but with less functionality. Apple just always seems to be lagging behind in the sport and fitness watch world.
Hey - does anyone know if it’s possible to get Apple Watch/ Apple health to push daily metrics recordings to TP? Garmin & whoop are able to do this. I’ve just switched to Apple Watch and it’s not happening so far. Thanks
As soon as Apple will allow me to design a workout on the phone, and send it to the watch, it wins. Not via 3rd party. And, fix up their screen metrics, similar to Garmin.
I can't have the workout sync in my apple watch ultra, my phone and watch is latest update...uninstall the app and reinstalled it....added workout on TP and can't see it even after connected to the apple watch from TP...idk that is frustrating.
@@Dcrainmaker now i know what is up, it looks like the built in workouts in the app itself are the ones that shows on the watch not the one you plan ahead. That’s unfortunate because they give you free subscription once you use it, so you don’t actually get to test this feature because it is not out yet.
As I understand the watch will not set the workout on a smart trainer. You still need Zwift, your wahoo or whatever to do that. So where is the point of starting the workout on the watch when you have a workout uploading from your zwift or wahoo anyway? You can any that to apple health and strava automatically too. And outdoors I think most cyclists who do structured training have a cycling computer. Or do I miss here something that would be valuable for cyclists?
I roll with 2 watches too. Garmin Fenix 7 and Apple Ultra. They both serve completely different purposes. When people ask about it (as they always do), after explaining it, I make the point that people wear bracelets on a wrist that don’t do anything. 🙂
As usual, another great video from you. Thank you! I have a question, running and cycling are possible, but are the swimming workouts also possible? Thank you very much
Not that I mind having to great reviews like DC Rainmaker and DesFit reviewing the same products and releasing videos almost simultaneously but is there a coordinated relationship between the two?
Typically it's not them that would coordinating it, it's usually based on the release of the thing. They need to have early access to the feature, the app, or a device, whatever they're reviewing, and the developer/manufacturer gives them a date and time that they can release their review. This is very common, and that is why on a whole host of product types you see reviews all drop at the same time, it's not just these fitness devices/apps. For just your general analytics, if you're even an hour late, you will see fewer views.
Indeed, this simply had an embargoed timeframe attached to it (a specific date/time media are allowed to post about it). That doesn't mean the company has any say at all in what I post (they don't see it, they don't know) - just tied to a certain exact date/time.
Pretty cool to finally be able to send workouts to AW and not creating them manually. Unfortunately, I don’t get any alerts/notifications as for pace which I need since I am running in different zones in my intervals for a certain time for example. I have been using these alerts on manually created workouts heavily. So not really a benefit for me. Or does anyone know a hack to get notifications/alerts transferred to the AW aswell? I have structured workouts on threshold pace from TP (premium) transferred to AW, but no zones/alters/notifications are displayed 😢

Making the training peaks subscription all that more worth it .. cheers Ray
