  • This video is about replacing the stock shock absorber on my Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 with a new YSS shock absorber. I have received some comments from people who think my instructional mechanical videos are too long. For this reason I have tried a different method in this video. Please let me know your thoughts.

    I appreciate the extra work you had to put in in order to provide reference notes for those who have complained about the longer videos.
    Personally, I very much prefer watching the full videos, complete with the inevitable glitches that we all come across from time to time. You couldn't possibly cover all such issues in this written format, which is why I think you should stick with the longer, real-life format.
    Everyone learns in different ways, but I think it's fair to say that most of us watch UA-cam in order to watch people actually doing stuff. Those who prefer to read might be better served by reading the workshop manual.
    I'm really not trying to upset viewers of your videos but I think that your time is better spent actually showing us what you're doing rather than writing about it.
    Thank you for your considerable efforts to provide an interesting and watchable channel. I've been a subscriber from Day One and reckon you're doing a great job.

    Hi Ian, Its people like you who take there time and care, which means folk like me can repair our own bikes. I have no interest in watching content where I do not learn. Your video on the headstock bearings is a game changer as mine will be replaced next winter and to be honest I am not paying someone to do it for me. The internet and You Tube is the best resource I have ever come across in finding out how to achieve repairs and servicing. I for one dont mind watching an hours content if it means I can learn something and be prepared for the pitfalls. Our cars bikes and cycles in my household are all repaired by me often using tuition from the internet. Personally I dont like the photos as much as its like a Haynes manual and I struggle with them at times. Thank You for your time uploading content,

    It's such a shame you have had to change the instructional videos, I have leant so much from them and they have given me the confidence to tackle jobs I would never have attempted before. I know you can't please everyone, but these people with a short attention span are going to ruin it for those of us who wish to learn.
    Anyway all the best with future vids.

      Here’s a handy tip. To protect the shock from muck thrown up by the rear wheel, you could fit a hugger but at great cost. Instead, I cut a rectangular flap from a black neoprene mouse mat and attached it to the underseat plastic splashguard by two self-tapping screws. I made it long enough for the bottom edge of it to drop into the start of the swinging arm gap. Result - no crud on the shock and at zero cost.

    I wish I had known about drilling through the battery box when I fitted mine! It’s obvious now but it takes a leap of imagination to come up with the idea in the first place. Of course, RE should have incorporated the hole in the battery box in the factory, the muppets.

    Thanks for the shout out mate. Very much appreciated.
    It's sad that people are so impatient these days. People seem to want a quick answer and are no longer willing to learn "how" before they "do".
    The pics are helpful but as you've already mentioned, if the subscriber has no idea, they will struggle to do the job.
    I am very mechanically minded, but I'll watch a whole video always to the end because there's always something to be learnt. I'm 57 so it's probably an age thing. Having the capacity to be patient. 😁

    The ones watching the video to the end are the ones that are capable of doing the job themselves and want to know the whole process. If you want to keep the video at the top of the barrel. Split it into 10 minutes sections, but clearly labelled 1 2 3 so we can follow along if attempting the job ourselves. Cheers Mark

    Thank you kindly for the video Ian. As per other comments, personally I would prefer a full video. I have a harsh squeak coming from the shock absorber top mount so I need access to grease. The biggest issue for me is that I am not confident drilling the battery box in situ or making a plastic piece to cover the hole, so a video on this aspect would be invaluable. But you have explained why you have adopted the current photographic approach, due to folks poor attention span. Kind Regards. Cliff

    Ian its been great following your videos. I have recently had essentially the same mods done to my Himalayan as you, and your videos have been my inspiration. I'm not a mechanic and I couldn't really do the work myself, as I live in a flat and have no workshop, so I took it to the local race bike engineering shop. They don't usually have capacity, but managed to squeeze it in. I had the Tech cam, Hitchcocks valves and the YSS shock done. They didn't take much time and handed me back something that is a little bit warm, lets say;-)). They had never worked on a Royal Enfield before, so there was a bit of to and fro on manuals downloaded from the web and working out what parts were needed, but your insights were most helpful, especially on the valve clearances (0.2 vs 0.23 on exhaust). I don't know what issues they had/did not have with the shock, but it is fitted and works great! Nobody complained and the bill wasn't excessive. One thing I'm a bit intrigued by is the amount of problems you have had a such a low mileage (steering head bearings, wheel bearings, oil pump drive wasn't it?). Mine is a BS4, one of the first exported to UK, I'm wondering if after the issues they had on the first BS3 release, maybe they upped their game on the quality for the first overseas release and perhaps gave the beancounters rope on subsequent releases. I'm at 10k miles and had no more issues than a couple of minor quality control issues relating to assembly. Even the stock valves at circa 10k miles had none of the hollowing on the valve stem yours had.

    • @iantoy7778
      @iantoy7778  2 місяці тому

      Royal Enfields are a mixed bunch. Some seem quite well built whereas others are just problem after problem. Having seen videos from the factory in India it would appear that it could be done to who assembled your bike on the day. Lack of care in their work was obvious.

    As others have said I prefer seeing you do things step by step explaining as you go. I've watched some very long how-to videos when I am actually undertaking the work. I don't consider them entertainment and I understand why viewers will drop off quickly. Unless you have a young female assistant in a bikini showing up periodically through the video...
    When you first described the process I said to myself that I won't be doing that job. But after the work around you showed, when the time comes for a new rear shock it's likely I will do the work. Thanks for sharing it.

    Ian , you make some very good videos and if people can't be bothered to watch the whole thing , then that's their problem and not yours .
    I'm not keen on this new format , if I wanted to read instructions , I'd read the workshop manual .

    You don't have to take everything off. Just take out the battery, the screw on the right side of the battery case, lift up the case with a tire lever (only 3 or 4 mm) and you can put on the nut. More important was to take out the swingarm and clean everything, put new grease on the bearings and the linkage and put it all together again. You feel if it is necessary if the (disconnected) swingarm does not move smoothly. My bike is a 21 model with 24tkm.

    As an aside to my comments below, I cannot find a replacement battery box on the Himalayan parts diagram, in case I ruin the battery box whilst drilling it. It looks like it is part of the air box which retails at £120, although I am not certain that this is correct. Kind Regards. Cliff

    • @iantoy7778
      @iantoy7778  Місяць тому

      It is part of the air box but when you drill the hole as shown in the video it won't actually damage the airbox itself even though the battery box is moulded into the air box. You are only drilling a battery box section and is beyond where one of the main mounting points is. That is very thick and very strong. With care you should not have a problem. The air box will not crack or damage in latter life.

    I can't help but wonder if there is a way to incorporate both approaches in one product, as you will have the footage already. For example if a job is accomplished by several stages, have some written 'coaching notes' inserted in the video before each step. Then viewers would know what's coming and profit more from watching you actually doing it? I doubt it would take much extra editing time but might provide opportunities to improve the 'acceptable duration' numbers ?

    The original format is better 👍
    If people haven't got the attention span watch for more than ten minutes ( the time span between adverts on the TV if you think about it) then I doubt they are going to take the time to read the text.
    A symptom of society in general unfortunately Ian 👍

    I much prefer your old method of filming how a job is done. People who are clicking off after 10 minutes are not actually going to do the job. Someone who is going to do it wants as much step by step detail as possible.

    Hi Ian, mate, this new version of ‘how to’ I don’t like.. personally I much prefer the style that you’ve already adapted prior.. watch, listen, do makes for far greater knowledge & understanding.. it would be interesting to know if this new short version format actually takes longer to produce. I don't think that format of video tuition will work for most people, myself included. When it comes to watching a long video sometimes for various reasons I'll watch half and save some for later. Meal times, TV or going out shopping crops up throughout the day. Does that show up that I've only watched half of the video? Or does the algorithm pick up that I've watched all the video in the end?

    • @iantoy7778

    a way around the impatient folk is to put time stamps in the video blurb - that way they can jump fwd and back as they see fit and the rest of us can have the video playing at nor mal speed while doing the job - so many folk are approaching adhd due to living heir lives attached to mobile bloody phones, we have to forgive them as it is not their fault - algorithms are affecting people badly and no matter how much it is pointed out to them they still won't revert back to normal human behaviour

    Ian i tried not to comment on this one because you get negative comments like you say and you probs don't know what to do for the best. I sat on my hands but failed so here goes. You said you had subscribers moaning that your videos were too long and boring?? Surely the ones complaining were not the majority of subscribers so why do you have to change to make a few moaners happy unless it suits you to change because its easier for you. I can only speak for myself and a few friends that i put on to your channel... we like it the way it is. Its not only about the technical content we enjoy the build up and the little stories you tell standing there with your pot of tea stood in your Crocs.... its very relaxed and well... part of it. I myself can't watch if just pictures its far worse🙄(its like reading a Haynes manual🤔🥱) Sometimes you don't get chance to read it all and the screen page changes so you are forever pausing and dragging back and this has its own problems sometimes freezing up depending on internet speed etc. Don't be offended you do what's best for you I'm just giving you an honest opinion from this side. Cant wait till you have fitted it and gone for a ride to test it. Pity your shock packed up the standard suspension is pretty good IMO specially looking at the price point of the bike👍👍
