Loosen all the jaws, completely close the chuck with the key, push all the jaws tightly together, then retighten and that will lesson the gap or eliminate it all together, Im happy with mine
Daryl, I don’t know did You have with Your chuck few situation while turning when the jaws has open self completly. This loose is making a microshakes while turning and the jaws can open themselfs. I had that few times especially on soft wood and no matter how strong I squized the chuck.
@@Secondlifeofwoodturning these chuchs put a lot of force on the wood. I have found that tightening the chuch too tight the first time on a new piece of wood compresses it and I generally retighten several times while turning helped with that. Hope this works for you.
also make your dovetail angle as close to the angle of the dovetail of the chuck. that way the wood compresses evenly throughout the piece and will remain tighter and a better grip
@@darylhollis4624 I think You are right with too much tightening. It is very rational 👌On my next video You will be able to see how many times the blank loose a ballance 🤤 Today I tested a new chuck. There is a big difference. Thanks for advices 🤝 Rqv
Thanks for the mention, Rav! 👍🏻 I went from the same type of cheaper chuck to the nova and love it. The cheaper one worked to get me started, but you’ll love the nova. 🙂

Yeah, It was very nervous and dangerous. I'm still using this cheap chuck but only when I don’t have a choice. Nova chucks are totaly on higher level. Take care and have a good fun with new chuck. Rav
I bought a bigger lathe in February and needed a new chuck so I also upgraded from a cheap chuck and bought a Nova 2 chuck. I haven't been able to do a lot of turning yet but I too am in the learning process of using a good chuck and so far it's money well spent!!!!!!!
You bring a peace to my head 🤝 😊 I'm glad You have a good opinion. Either my wife will be able to kill me 😜 After buying not matched cole jaws she was really angry 🤤
@Brandon S The Nova G2 is a high quality chuck without the high price. there are a few different chucks for different size lathes, they have adaptors to fit different brands of lathes and most all or of their jaws fit all of their chucks. Check out the Nova line up if you're looking for a chuck
Hi Rav, I just got the nova G3 for Xmas. I have a four jaw indipendent that I have had chunks of wood fly off and nearly took my head off. This new G3 is more safe and it's very well made. You could always resell your other chuck and buy the cole jaws. I also want the cole jaws and pen blank jaws. Like your video and just subscribed can't wait to see what you make. Possibilities are endless matey.
Hi Lance 🤝 Yes, G3 is a good stuff. I already have cole jaws and Super Nova Chuck with big jaws for big logs. Safety is the most important at workshop but if we have to take a risk we must expect everything what will not go right but it needs experience with mistakes. Have a good fun with new chuck 💪 All the best. Rav
That's great, Gord 💪 I was watching Your every video with presenting and cleaning Nova chucks. It was very helpful 👍 and I decided to buy a Nova chuck 😁 Be safe my friend. Rav
Congrats Rav you will love the chuck. You do terrific work with the old chuck so now there is no holding your back! It will just make life so much easier for sure. And like you said putting your cole jaws on the other chuck will be handy. Stay safe my friend! Gary
Thanks Gary. It will be very helpful becouse my segmented bowl which I'm making I was taking off from the chuck 2 times and always loose a balance. Take care my friend. Rav
Hi Rav, how are you my friend? I am looking to buy a chuck, do you like this chuck and did you need an adaptor for your lathe? Thanks Rav, speak soon mate.
Hi Jim. I'm pretty well, thank You. Nova G3 chuck is very good. No looses and keeps very good even with small mortises. I don't need adaptor for my lathe becouse spindle is m33 👍 With this anniversary set You will get 2 other sets of jaws in case so don’t have to making special shelf to not lost any part. Take care my friend 🤝
Wha the hek? I thought this was going to be about a chuck not a Spannfutter Paket! Whatever that is👀 Good choice Rav. This is the exact chuck set I started out with (except I have the English, not metric M33 version). I love it. So will you. Some things and some advice. Not that you need it but (I can't help myself👴) ... 1. Very Important !!!! Be sure to back off the setscrew Before removing the chuck from the lathe. If you do not, the screw will mangle the threads as it comes off. If you are lucky, you will notice before the entire thread is ruined. Don't ask me how I know😮 I always use the screw because I reverse rotate the lathe a lot, usually for sanding so I have a habit of checking. (I do not bother with the little screw pad (the orange dot) since it is too hard to deal with - but without it the screw will chew into the lathe (acceptable to me). There is a chance the setscrew will vibrate away if it is not used (this almost happened on my faceplate once) 2. Make sure the jaws are clean and in the correct chuck slide - each is numbered. This may take care of your gap. Maybe you will need to file a sharp edge somewhere so the cockeyed jaw will fit. 3. The dovetails are 10 degrees if that matters to you. Note the 50mm jaws are Not a Dovetail on the inside (tenon side) - they are straight (0 degrees). And there is a tiny ledge(?) to help the grip - I've used on a 1/8 inch tenon a couple of times already (on smaller pieces). 4. Be sure to follow directions for the worm screw - lightly tighten in chuck, screw into wood all the way tight, then fully tighten the jaws. This will remove any gap or looseness. Remember my too tight worm screw? Use wax or drill a slightly big hole. They also say green wood will expand and grip very tight if used overnight. I have also used a 1/4 inch spacer so it is not so deep into the wood of smaller work. Also realize a cockeyed (at a slant) worm screw will wiggle(?) the hole bigger when you cinch it tight. I suppose that enough; I could go on. And on. And on😁 Have fun with your new toy😃 Stay safe my friend. -Mike p.s Did I already say to Loosen the Setscrew Before Removing the Chuck ?
Ok. Now I know everything - I hope 😉 Spannfutter is from German. It means "chuck" 😁 I wrote to You few weeks ago that I'm collecting money for this chuck and finaly I could buy it 🦸♂️ 1. Setscrew You said. Now I know too and I know from where You know 🤣🤣 I will not need this screw (I think) becouse I don't have reverse rotation on my lathe but 8 will leave that screw. Maybe someday I will have bigger lathe with this function 😉 2. I'm always checking numbers on jaws 👍 For now I will not file this gap. Maybe jaws need to set themselfs. I will work with them and than I will see. 3. I didn't know how to call the "ledge" properly so I used "dovetail" and You understood 👌😁 This ledge is much better than on old chuck but I never trust to things in 100 % 4. I didn't now how to properly screw the warm screw. I will use this advice becouse I remember that flying bowl. She was very fast 😵 I will choose right bit for drilling the hole. Wax on screw is working bad on my psychic. Too much wax and the wood will get soft or something similar. I have a bad scenario for it in my head 😬 I see the setscrew is sitting deep in Your mind 🙃 My mind is soft like sponge too. Is soaking every bad experience 🤤 Tomorrow start of fun 😎 Take care my friend. Rav
