Knights of Sidonia is people fighting against alien bug monsters. The rusted 'mech' was one of those, and IIRC, the bullet that hit it at the end was made using a material that causes them to break down and scatter into pieces. It was a good series, but I don't think the anime has ever finished adapting the manga?
This was really good manga and well adapted anime. Plz check "Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince - Izuru vs Jiart". That's also good fight scene of CGI mech.
