  • I get quite a few questions & comments regarding Ponytail Palms. My 2 are doing great and growing like crazy since their recent repotting so here’s an update. My neighbor has one that has multiple heads on the same trunk & I tell you how to get those if that’s a look you want. So,
    This video is a bit of “Ponytail Palm potpourri”!

    My 2 Ponytail Palms really did a surge of growth this spring/summer after being repotted last year. Don't be concerned if the lower leaves start to yellow. It's part of the natural growth cycle because PP develop a lot of trunk as they age.
    If you have a reason or the guts to cut the head off a Ponytail Palm, multiple heads should appear. The 1 in the video got a straight cut which eventually brought on 3 heads but you can also do an angled cut. With that, a head will appear at the top and 1 should appear at the bottom of the cut too.
    Straight cuts usually bring multiple heads where cut and sometimes a few at the base. Be warned: it can take a few months for any signs of new growth to appear so be patient.

    Hi! love your videos. Ok. So i Have a 40 year old ponytail palm that was my grandpas. It's huge. I've had it for about 4 years now and I've never repotted it. I'm going to repot it tomorrow though. I noticed about a year ago there is a hole in the trunk. Is that normal??

      Val - You can cut off the head & a new sprout (or sprouts) will appear. That's what happened to the ones you see in the sidewalk strip. Nell

    Hi! I recently purchased a baby ponytail palm, and at the very top of the trunk was a black earthy thing covering the top and a bunch of little hairs....I saw cuz i picked it off. I was just wondering if that was okay to do? otherwise, there's three heads growing off the side from the center where i'm speaking to and it's so cute. Thank you!! :D

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 років тому

      Hi +Ashley Herndon Oh my gosh, was that black earthy thing a caterpillar? I've never heard that on a Ponytail Palm nor or they subject to too much of anything. Perhaps it was a fungus or mildew picked up in the greenhouse? Anyway, these plants are very "sturdy" so it should be fine. It's a good sign that 3 heads have appeared! Nell

    I don't know much about these ponytail palms.
    I bought a HUGE one on Craiglist (Like literally 6 feet tall with the bottom bulb being nearly 18" wide) for $20. It was in a large broken terra cotta pot.
    I was later told that the price I got it at was literally unheard of!
    So.. Living in NE FLorida with all kinds of other palms everywhere.. I planted it in my yard.
    Last winter we had like 2 weeks of nights where the temperatures dropped to and below freezing. I was really worried about the palm.
    All of the foliage on top froze. It all fell out. The top became soft and mushy (Top 6 inches of the tree were DEAD!)
    I was really bummed out. Wasn't sure what to do with it.So I just left it there, let nature take it course.
    That was 4 months ago. The top never regenerated itself, and finally I decided it was going to have to come out.
    As I walked up to it I noticed what I thought were these green bugs on several spots all up and down the trunk.
    The ponytail palm was actually sprouting through the sides of it's trunk. Up and down it's full height, little tassels are appearing and growing.

      Next time cut the mushy part off and seal it with wood glue.

    Lovely plants. I'm looking to replace the parlor palm in my snake's cage because he keeps squishing it. These plants seem to have a more substantial stem to them, so it's an option I'm considering. Incidentally, a lot of the ponytail palms I see in the big box stores like Home Depot etc. are made to grow those several heads just by the nature of how they're cultivated in mass. They're often sold as "bonsai" and they simply take an existing plant that's been made to grow a thick trunk and chop the top off. They doctor the pruning scar and cause several of the shoots to pop out. I assume they take the head and root it.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  9 років тому

      Yes, I love Ponytail Palms. +Marina McKinley They cut the single head off to get multiple heads. This would definitely be a much sturdier option than the NBPalm. It's very important to keep it dry as can be - they don't like to be kept wet. Nell

    I got a ponytail palm from Lowe's that says patio ponytail. it has lots of leaves , very long curly hair looking leaves that cover the length of the trunk. it is a 4.5 gal. pot and I want to plant outside . do you think it will grow well?

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 років тому

      They grow outdoors beautifully here in Santa Barbara +Sherry Melton because of our temperate climate. Depends on your growing zone - you could always keep it outdoors in the warmer months. Nell

    I have a ponytail palm with a main trunk about 7 feet tall. It also has a secondary branch about 3 - 4 feet tall. There is also a pup starting from the bulb/base but a few inches above the soil. It is very top-heavy and I am considering removing the tallest part. Can you offer some guidance? I'd also like to propagate the pup (I assume this small side sprout is considered a pup) but there are no roots since it is coming from the bulb. Is it possible to separate this pup and start a new plant?

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 років тому

      Hi +Mark Posey I've never pruned the head off a PP which was that tall & old but I've read that other people have with success. PP are commonly propagated by basal offshoots & spring is a great time to do it. Just make sure your knife that you're cutting with & medium you're transplanting it into are very clean. Nell

    • @markposey7001
      @markposey7001 8 років тому

      What kind of medium to transplant to? Regular topsoil? Or something else?

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 років тому

      +Mark Posey Not topsoil. You want to use a medium which drains really well, like a succulent & cactus mix. Nell

    Hi Nell! How are you?
    My Ponttail Palm was doing great, but now the leaves are bending. What does that mean? Too little water, too much water, too little light or too much light? Please let me know.

    Hi. We've had our Ponytail palm for about 15 years; She is close to 9 feet. We have many sprouts at the bottom. Can you tell me how I can transplant those sprouts into independent plants?

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 років тому

      You cut them away carefully (with a very sharp & clean knife is best) +jessica inhofe Brush away the soil from the base 1st & be sure to get some of the roots with each of the sprouts. It's best to do it when the sprouts are at least 3-5" & in the spring of summer. Hope that helps, Nell

    i have a 4 ft tall ponytail palm that my dad salvaged from my grandmoms and the plant is well over 40 years old so they definetly grow slow inside
