The Nintendo 64 can benefit from a multitude of visual enhancements. In this video I cover a CRT style shader preset which helps recreate the the experience and glory days of playing a Nintendo 64 on a tube television.
*Retro Crisis GDV-NTSC shader presets would NOT BE POSSIBLE without the Guest Advanced shader:

Retro games really do look substantially better on CRTs, especially since they were made for that screen format!!! Good job!!
I agree. CRT's just bring those images to life. I must admit, modern OLED screens are coming close
@@RetroCrisis Stupid question, but I keep hearing conflicting reports that OLEDs and CRT shaders are a bad mix because of burn in. Is that true?
@@nintendo1889x I don't think that's a stupid question to ask, it's a very reasonable thing to be concerned about and there isn't much information about it circling around.
I would suggest waiting for MicroLED displays to get released at an affordable price or investing in a Mini LED display right now if you want to use these CRT shaders and filters with the latest tech in display.
Glad I found this channel. I started building a Launchbox library recently, and this channel has been a wealth of information. Thanks for taking the time to put all these tutorials and showcases together. Presentation on these videos is 10/10. Love it.
This is the first time I have seen a shader that looks good. It's a good, in fact, that it should be necessary. Always on function checked from boot up.
Haha wow that's high praise. Which kind of screen are you using ?
👏Wonderful job! I love how this looks.
I find it interesting that dithering seems to be rare on the N64. I know that the N64 was able to do dithering since the Vanish Cap effect in Super Mario 64 used dithering, and I'd imagine that it could've been more efficient for transparent objects, but it seems like they usually just went for real transparency. Kind of interesting.
I think dithering existed on the N64 but I believe the anti-aliasing or filtering of some king was always on, which hid the dithering. Some folks have found a way to disable that filtering on N64 hardware
Ohh and it also provides some color correction ! Nice
Haha you noticed - I honestly thought that would annoy people :P
Wow, incredible work as always. I think personally you should work on a general shader for RF output on older consoles (Channel F, SG-1000, 2600, etc.) It would be great to see vintage games get some love too! If you want to, of course.
I would love to get around to that eventually. I must admit, those consoles are from the generation just before me, so would be interesting to explore them. Are there any RF characteristics that you're particularly interested in?
@@RetroCrisis For me, the fuzzy display and lower resolution just has a distinct charm and really brings out the sometimes more abstract pixel artwork from games of the time.
@@chibblenex3438 I'm totally with you on that. RF forever and always. I still use my Sega Mega Drive using an RF cable on my CRT. Something magic about RF right.
Unrelated to the comment, but I've been using this shader since I wrote the original comment and have been enjoying it immensely ever since! Quick question for ya, whenever you used Mupen64Plus instead of ParaLLEl for the showcase, did you ever change the deinterlacing method to "Weave" instead of the default "Bob" in the RDP's settings? By the way, thanks for the quick responses!
By RDP, I specifically mean the ParaLLEl RDP! If you didn't use it at all, then that's fine too. Just wondering!
N64! With shaders that make the games look even better!! Paper Mario! Zelda! I WILL SEND YOU TO HEAVEN!! All the racing games look amazing. I know I’ve said this before but I think this one is your best work yet 👏👏👏👏
Tulky babes, you're too kind! When are you getting a CRT btw? NEed to get you one for you Gamecube!!
Accidentally crossed my eyes during this and it actually makes for a pretty good 3d video👌
This is really special
Top work as usual!
Thanks Ninja - always appreciate you bro
Actually, N64 games that used Expansion Pack and were in HI-REZ like Roque Squadron, did not have any horizontal scanlines on CRT, so this is beyond retro!
That's correct, the scan lines would look very different for 480 compared to 240
What's the name of the game shown at 3:47?
"Sin and Punishment"
@@SpankTheMunkee thank you brother
Sin and Punishment.
aka Tsumi to Batsu
I'm missing something here.
The core setup video in the description uses the mupen core. From what I gather, it isn't compatible with vulkan. The shader pack you have listed doesn't show up for me unless an emulator is using vulkan.
Are you using a different core, or am I just missing something obvious?
Hi dude. So I exclusively only use Vulkan and switch between Mupen Plus and Paralleli depending on the game, due to compatibility.
Hello my friend.
I have to say I am not sure how to feel about this one it has some nice things going for it, but maybe the scanlines are too agressive? I am quite conflicted hehehe
Hey bro! Oh no, that isn't good 🤣 - which type of screen (size/resolution) are you using to view it?
Queros
CRT bem top gosto filt ❤
This looks great.
Any chance of a 1080p version?
Hi thanks. 1080p is in the download pack.
Awesome!
AMAZING.
Thanks bro - I hope it works on ok on your computer!
@@RetroCrisis It always does. Can't wait for the next one.
What's the benefit of a specific shader for N64 instead of a more generic one, like CRT-Royale, for instance?
Just personal taste
@@gvanderlee2703 Exactly this
CRT-Royale is a great option to be fair. But personally I like to tune in the shaders to my preferences to get them exactly where I want. Which do you prefer to use?
@@RetroCrisis I like to use them all, honestly. Always changing and experimenting with different settings, it's part of the fun 😄
No love for Winback? 😢Shader looks like it came out pretty good though.
What RDP did you end up going with?
Ah crap I was meaning to record it!!! I had the ROM lined up and everything!! I'm so sorry dude
Ah woops I forgot to answer the second bit - Between Parallei and glide64 for Mupen, but overall I found I had a better overall experience with the Parallei core
Do you suppose to sit at the distance while using such kind of shaders? Cause if you sit close it looks awful, all i see is huge separate pixels instead of the whole picture, sure crts had visible pixels but it wasn't that bad.
I wouldn't recommend sitting too close. It really depends on the size of your screen. For example, on my 20" 4K, I sit about a meter away. on my 65" 4K I sit about 10' away. What are you using?
@@RetroCrisis I use 40" 1080p lcd tv as my monitor, shaders like geom or easycrt looks pretty good on it.
@@SerdceDanko Ah ok that's good to know - thanks for sharing. Just a bit of background, I'd originally calibrated my shader presets on a 65" 4K OLED screen sitting about 10' away from the TV - so that's my personal use case. So I imagine results might vary on 1080p
Oh my God supposed to like you’re actual hardware to the person who meet this great job for them yeah, I can actually play my games like they’re supposed to like they’re supposed to but people I guess I can give them a thumbs up
Thanks for checking it out. I hope you enjoy using it
What makes this a better shader for the N64?
That is a good question, that I don't 100% know how to answer. When I created the preset it was calibrated exclusively using a multitude of N64 games and their varied video characteristics.
It's possible to combine your Retro Crisis CRT TV Filter with Soqueroeu background v2? Thanks a lot!
I think Soqueroeu uses Mega Bezel if I remember correctly. I've not ported my presets into Mega Bezel just yet...maybe somepoint later this year
Okay cool Thanks!@@RetroCrisis
The games in the video appear without texture filtering. Are you using Paralleli, right?
You've got a good eye for detail! I used a mix of Paralleli and MupenNext, as some games tended to perform better on one or the other. Banjo Tooie for example ran terribly on Mupen, but like a dream on Paralleli
It's better than render raw, but I'm sure you could go further, pixels are still too viewable for me. It would be interesting to compare render with N64 connected on a true CRT screen.
I could help with that lol
Just curious, should I turn the saturation back down for this shader? Is the increased vibrancy there for any reason than to just make it look better in a side by side or not really? I love this shader but that part I didn’t get.
You're more than welcome to modify it to your personal preferences. Go for it
Should I use the 1080p presets or 4k if I have a 1440p monitor
Try both and see which looks best to your eye
@@RetroCrisis One more question, is it possible to use mega bezels reflective border with this preset? I like this preset but I miss those bezels. I know you can combine shaders, but I only want the reflective bezels
Is the shader 4K meant be a 4K display only or emulator resolution should be 4K as well? Eg. I connect my Steam Deck to a 4K panel, should retroarch scale at 4K to use this well? 😊
As long as the display and output video is 4K, you should be ok for best results
Thanks@@RetroCrisis ! Appreciate that.
Do you have VI filters ON? Or OFF?
Sorry, what's a VI filter?
Hi, Retro Crisis, I love the way the shaders look, but when I load them in my Retroarch they look nothing like they do on the video. I don't know what I am doing wrong, because the colors aren't incorrect, they just don't look like they do on the video.I updated the slang shaders and downloaded the Guest Advanced shader. What am I doing wrong?
Sorry to hear that. What type of monitor and resolution are you using?
@@RetroCrisis I have an HP N223, using a resolution of 1920x1080p. Maybe it's just the resolution?
That might be it. I primarily focus on 4K. It will Definitely have minor issues on anything less
@@RetroCrisis thanks anyways. I can still Sonkun's shaders, which I wouldn't have known about if it weren't for you.
1440p version? 😗
Sorry my dude, I don't have a 1440p to test on
Which core did you use for this shader?
Both Paralleli and Mupen64Next as some games work better on the other
@RetroCrisis, well, I've tried using every Nintendo 64 core available in RetroArch, but all of them seem to just default to using "gl" as the video driver. I've tried switching to Vulkan, but every time, they just go back to using gl.
Try this (from memory):
Settings - configuration - save on quit - on
@@RetroCrisisI already have that on...
I'm using an Android device, by the way
Left a like for you 👍 FW 💯👍
Thanks Kev, much appreciated dude
you are an ultra sixty four guy😃😆
Haha I wish Nintendo had stuck with Ultra64 as the console name
@@RetroCrisis yup same here Mister😆
Doing what Nintendont
Hahahahaha sadly that seems to be the case
Will this crt shader work for PS2 (PCSX2)....JUST wanna know
I would say it might look a bit wierd for PS2 - but you're welcome to test it out
I'd personally use CRT royale Interlaced for PCSX2
We are waiting for the version for 1440P
not everyone needs 4k monitors
post it at least for testing if you can’t test it with friends
I don't own a 1440p monitor, so I'd be unable to create and test a 1440p preset.
@@RetroCrisis Then your preset is useless
I totally agree
Hey, you are very good at retroarch, I have a question, how to set it up in retroarch so that I can change the controller, my favorite shaders? I have batocera, one time i set my 5 favorite shaders and saved them. And I could change these shaders using buttons on the controller, but when I turn off the computer, everything returns to the default settings as if it hadn't been written down? You know what I'm talking about?how to fix this ?good job with chanel
