If your suggested pronunciation was correct, then Mario would spell his name as "Mei-ryo".
Japanese is very strict about it's pronunciation.
If you see an "a" sound, it's always pronounced "aww", if you see an "i" sound it's always pronounced "ee". Its not like English where the rules don't matter at all

I've always been fascinated by how dedicated and passionate people are with making smut featuring characters from G-rated media.
Like, Peach is this cute and innocent classic princess archetype from a series aimed at kids and yet she gets more stuff like full blown smut games, comics, animations and the like than more sexualized characters from adult mature games like Bayonetta.
I know this is because Mario is vastly more mainstream and well-known for a lot more people, plus Peach's Smash incarnation did make her look more mature and act more like a tease so it was more fuel for people who already found her attractive, but still, the fact that Peach is in the Top 10 of the most R34'd female videogame characters over women like Bayonetta is so funny to me.
