  • Amity Shlaes sheds light on the life of Calvin Coolidge, the thirtieth president of the United States. The harsh conditions of Coolidge's childhood shaped his political ideas and led to his deep understanding of life and helping people succeed, especially in business. Believing in small government and low taxes, he thought government needed to get out of the way so individuals and businesses could prosper. His supply-side economics were a resounding success, with an unemployment rate of 5 percent or even 3 percent, as the economy grew and the government shrank.

So inspiring. I have this book, and am now reading "Silent Cal's Almanack". He is such a role model for what we need in leaders today and in the future!

A brilliant historian; her first book, 'The Forgotten Man, is the real story of FDR.

It's interesting that Reagan could be seen as a paler version of Coolidge. Still, the first Republican presidential candidate that walks out on a stage while a recording of Reagan saying "Government isn't the answer to our problems... Government IS the problem!" will have my rapt attention. And I seriously believe it's a message that the country is dying to hear at this time.

2016 will be the year when we say enough is enough. Let it be the year of finally putting a stop of 80 years of government expansion and a return to the years of Coolidge when the constitution was respected. #StandWithRand 2016

What caused the 1929 crash wasn't Coolidge's lax regulation policies but an inflationary monetary policy by the Fed during a time of deflating prices due to great technological advancements.
    She fails to explain that.

I'm afraid you got things wrong. Friedman has been adamant about the fact that the FED didn't do its job which was to actually increase monetary liquidity/supply when BoA collapsed and bank runs were imminent. I actually agree that it wasn't Coolidge's fault but a government failure stemming from the specific institution.

overall, I think my biggest problem with Coolidge is that he enforced the prohibition and didn't try to repeal it.
However overall he was one of the, if not the, best presidents of all time.

But he was no supporter of prohibition though.

True but it had been Constitutionally amended at the time, so he was simply enforcing the Constitution as his Oath of Office required.

"He preserved the Presidency by RESPECTING it....
    Not...
    By AGGRANDIZING himself."....
    How novel......
It MUST have been a LONG time ago....

Let 2016 be the year of when we return government back or close to the size it was during the Coolidge years. #StandWithRand in 2016

Econman Unfortunately republican voters preferred a formerly successful real estate developer/reality TV star over Senator Paul. It's ashame he's not the one taking office.
