That's Masking fluid. It acts as a resist, preventing the watercolor from reaching the masked areas. Artists apply it with a brush or a special applicator and let it dry before painting. Once the painting is finished and the paint is dry, the masking fluid can be peeled or rubbed off, revealing the untouched paper beneath. This technique is useful for preserving highlights or intricate details in the painting.
