  • From the green fields of the Shire to the comforting burrows of Brambly Hedge, fantasy books are full of cozy homes we wish we could escape into. So what can we learn from these places about turning our own homes into safe havens of comfort and beauty?
"Frodo was now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, ‘a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.’ Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear and sadness.” - "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien

It would be Rivendell without a doubt. That passage in Fellowship always gives me that sense of 'hiraeth.' The presence of beauty and knowledge as well as the safety to pursue them, always make me wish I could live there❤

For me it's my nana's kitchen fresh from an hour outside picking blackberries whe I was a kid. The furniture was mismatched, the old aga cooker kept everything toasty warm, the kettle was boiling for nana's cup of tea and I had a mug of hot chocolate as we washed the blackberries, peeled apples and made an apple and blackberry crumble together. There were still sheep up the farm then, so we could hear them bleat occasionally outside.

My cosiest place memory doesn't involve a house! But hear me out. It's a memory of being snuggled in a blanket on a beach, in south Devon not far from my home. It was a small cove, in the early morning, the earliest days of autumn. The sun was coming up and my family were quietly chatting and drinking coffee around me while I drifted in and out of sleep. And then I remember seeing sailing g ships on the horizon in the morning sun. It was such a contrast between my safe cosy spot on the beach, and the hint of adventure in the distance, I'll never forget the feeling. So I guess for me, coziness at its best always has that little contrast. Whether it's a view of some distant hills through the window (which I know most of us don't have), or some pictures on the wall or music in the background that evoke the same feeling. My favourite moment in the hobbit is when bilbo is sitting in his snug cozy living room, with the fire burning low and the dwarves all begin to sing and he looks out the window and thinks of distant lands. Again, the contrast heightens the senses, and coziness is all about a place of safety within a world of uncertainty, so you kind of need a little of both! Just my take. Loved this video x

"minimalist is peaceful at best, soulless at worst" - that's such a good reminder! really enjoyed this video 🖤 i am a cozy maximalist, & try to combine the shire, rivendell, & molly weasley's style but still feel clean & cozy & like everything within the home has a home as well ✨ also, candlelight is definitely superior!!

My mom raised us on the "useful and beautiful" quote, and as a result my childhood home was the coziest place I've been since. I just moved with my gf to the big city and am slowly making a cozy haven out of a tiny suburban apartment. It's bliss.

My coziest place is now my home thankfully. I always try to engage my senses with my decorating and I try to make sure that wherever I might be sitting, I can be comfy and also everything in my field of view is sort of like art. I put a lot of accent lighting around, including colorful uplights in certain corners, and that adds some color and also pools of cozy light. I also like to switch my window curtains to a warm color when it’s cozy season. I like to have candles around as well. Something about flickering candle light makes me feel happy. I also love to bring in warm metal colors, light gold, copper, brass etc.

Grandmas house especially during canning season… the clicking of glass jars and metal rimmed lids. The smell of whichever vegetable or fruit being preserved.. can forget to the smell of earthy dirt from the potatoes and radishes that were unearthed and brought in for washing and to be eaten with nearly every meal. That was and still is the coziest spot I know. I now reside in that place and those memories are still vivid and I strive to have or make my own cozy..

My coziest place is me and my husband's place right now, it's the upstairs floor of a barn-shaped building so the ceilings are all barn-y and the doors are trapezoids to match the ceiling and walls. There are potted plants all over, bookshelves overflowing with books, cozy lamps and string lights, and usually incense burning. We have a beautiful view of oak trees all around, and one of our plants has vined itself up all the way to the ceiling! We have a wall full of art that we and our friends have done and it is very colorful. Definitely maximalist but in the sense that it evokes us to create.

    Great video. Love these ideas.
My coziest place, would have to be most old summer cabins i've been too.
Usually the walls are completely wooden. Wood floors and ceilings too. And wooden tables and benches. Small kitchens, not always running water or electricity. Real fireplaces. Old maps and trinkets from older generations. A deck of cards, some other board games, fishing supplies. These are pretty much staples of old cabins like these and i love it every time.

Beautiful video ❤ when I think of a cozy place my mind instantly goes to The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. The way nature & the seasons are so entwined with the way they live in their little lakehouse, so richly described. Every little detail is treasured. Nothing taken for granted. Their home is tiny, but it's a castle.
