  • Rag Bhupali in Jhaptal (10 beat time cycle)
Transcribed from the record Maestro's Choice, Series One
by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia - bansuri (bamboo flute)
Arranged for two sitars and tabla
    Performed by:
    Christopher Dicran Hale - sitar
    Matt James - sitar
    Naushad Ali Husein - tabla
In 2013, I transcribed the jhaptal section of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia's "Bhupali" performance from the Maestro's Choice: Series One record. Matt James, a friend and fellow sitar player, joined me in learning to play the piece.
Indian classical music is made up of both improvised and memorized material. The memorized material within the repertoire can be a tremendous aid in further learning how to improvise. Not only that, but memorized passages such as tihais are often interwoven with improvised melodies bringing new life to memorized material, and grounding improvisations within the idiom. This video explores how to use memorized material as a spring board to meaningful improvisation.

    Dedication
I would like to thank my guru, Partha Chatterjee, who has taught me sitar and Indian classical music since 2002. It is through his patient teaching and careful guidance that I find the will and strength to continue learning. parthachatterjeesitar.in

My search "Ravi Shankar Bhoopali" brought me here! Bhoopali is one of the most beautiful ragas, very close to my heart. The composition performed by Hariprasad Chaurasia, which these artists perform in this video, is one of my all time favorite albums as well. Here is the link to that performance: ua-cam.com/video/5wjJ3hpVO0k/v-deo.html
Chris, Matt, and Naushad - you have shown a lot of sensitivity to Hariji's rendering and I loved listening to your rendition. Hats off! You have earned a new fan and a subscriber.
Chris, I loved the way you explained the technicalities. You are a great teacher.

Great to know that you found it helpful Rob. It's ironic I suppose, but I also feel that it makes it harder to play and improvise now that I've learned what Hari ji played. It's as though nothing I play of my own can satisfy me now! But in other ways, I found it helpful to, especially as I apply these ideas to other ragas.

@@SitarToronto i hear ya man. i suppose all we can do is add to a much larger and older story. coming from the classical indian tradion of music it predates our western european traditions by centuries. i love that about music from the mississippi delta, sacramento river to the river nile we all understand the blues.

Really! I love the idea of communicating Indian classical music on an electric guitar. I've tried it a number of times myself, and it works better in some of the open tunings.

@@SitarToronto So it's the secret (open tuning)? Thank's I will try.
I'am just using pentatonic scale and modes of dorian & mixolydian. I heard from other UA-cam channel "Lydian can be used as an Indian flavour approach".

The maker is Rikhi Ram from Delhi. I bought the sitar back in 2000 when the prices were still sort-of-reasonable.
