as a newly qualified Class 1&2 driver, i cant get my head around this overly complex bolloxs. So i am watching all videos available. Thank you very much for this video, its one on the best i have seen. thankyou
First time driving today. I have not got a clue about these f-ing cards. I just stuck it in and got on with my day. Just sat at home waiting to go to jail now.
Can you alter it if youve accidentally forgot to do manual entry?? Ciz I started @ 14:00 didmt get truck till 17:00 put it in n forgot about it now I cant go back to 14:00
So just say i work behind a desk for 5 days mon/fri then go and do some hgv agency work on the Saturday or Sunday, what do i input in the tachograph what i was doing the days i was working behind a desk, or what if i was driving a van under 3.5 tonne for the 5 days???? Help here would be amazing because ive not had a proper answer yet, thanks =)
If you have the time, rounding up to the nearest 15minute interval makes time management easier. So, 1200/1215/1230/1245/1300 instead of 12:08/12:19/12:29/13:03. It's a personal preference and is only ever applicable to people who don't live in the cab. If you nightout you end at say 16:00 start at 03:00 you wouldn't need manual entries as you'd plonk it on rest at 16:00 and back on other work at 03:00.
So If I have this right , you don't have to put in a manual entry as long you do your walk around check , I put the card in and then do my checks and in the evening when I'm finished i take out my card and go home , do I still need to do a manual entry
karl martin If you have time within your working hours then always manual entry. You should not just put the card in and leave it. Always end the day before, show rest and start time, then walk round. But only add time at end of last shift if you had spare time left. EG; you ended on 12 hours, so you have an hour of your 13, or 3 of your 15 left. So adding an extra 15mins won't hurt. Unless you had run out your working time. Ergo; you end on 12, have the 1 or 3 left on your 13 or 15, but you were on your second 6 hour limit, thus adding 15 would cause an infringement.
Mark Jones on download? That's something I've not noticed before. Your start and finish times should be when you started, (entered card at start after manual entry), and when you withdrew the card. As far as I'm aware. Yoy may wish to speak to the people where you work. Could be a faulty card or tacho machine if you use same vehicle.
Dean Mason good question. Usually I do that once I download the card for end of day or at start to see where I am in the week total. Next time I'm in and driving I'll go through the menu's and get back to you.
Trucker Bill Yh it would just be nice to see down to the minute so you know if you can make a drop before break, I know we could just look at the time the card goes in but sometimes it could be 5 mins after start time, but then I don’t do manual entry so I usually just assume working time from say 6:00 til 12:00 but could be 6:04 til 12:04 but I’d still aim for 12:00 to be sure but knowing exact minute would save me desperately looking to park
we have had new guys come to our place like your man says further down they press ok ok ok just means there place never shown them the correct way great to see you showing this clip bill this will hopefully stop people getting had by vosa also I am led to believe if you on night out your card must stay in tachograph head but some drivers I see eject card for the 11 hours off or 9 on reduced is illegal to take card out while u in vehicle ?
When you're on your daily rest either is ok. As long as the vehicle doesn't move, the mileage all adds up and you show break no one really cares. As far as I'm aware it's just bad practice to take card out, nothing more.
They probably couldn't come up with something shittier than this! Thanks for the tip, though. But I guess I will need a few years to understand this thing fully.
Strange thing on my tacho, It shows less hours on total (bottom line) and more hours for driving (top line) whats going on here? surely tt should be the other way round????
It's illegal to not show your full amount of working time. Say you start at 10am and you get in your rig at 1030. you bung your card in and leave it alone. well that's 30 mins not shown. say you take card out at 2200 and by the time you've debriefed it's 2215. if you fail to add that the next day that's 15 mins not shown. Technically you, therefore, are obliged to show all of your shift time.
Hi Bill, if let say you change truck and use another truck what do i do? do i need to do same thing again? And when boarding channel tunnel train and parked do i leave it on other work? thanks for the Vid.
Noel Borg If you exit one truck and get into another during the same shift, unless you're out of the cab for a break there is no need to do manual entries. If you took a break then yes, you need to input the break period, (i.e out of 1 at 12:00, into next one at 14:30. Break taken from 13:15. Would be; 12:00-13:15 = Other work or POA, 13:15-14:00 = break, 14:00-14:30 = POA or other work). As for the ferry, in the settings you can find Ferry mode. Alternatively numerous drivers would leave on break. On a ferry you're out of the cab, resting in the canteen or bar area so break would be ok. Although Ferry mode is preferable.
this is the purpose of Ferry mode. You only use the ferry option if the crossing will be part of your daily rest period otherwise you just use the tacho as normal. If it will be part of your daily rest you arrive in the port and book on and join the lane to wait for boarding and put your tacho on rest, and go into the menu and set the end country to UK. Just before you board go into the menu and select the ferry option, this will mark the data with the reason you are interrupting your rest period. When you move to board the mode will change to driving. Once on board select rest mode again. When you come to disembark, if you have completed your 11 hour rest go into the menu and set begin country to France and change mode to other work. If you will be completing your rest once ashore then go into the menu and select the ferry option, again it will mark the data with the reason you are interrupting your rest. Disembark and when parked up change the mode to rest. When you have completed your rest set begin country to F and change mode to other work. That's it. The ferry option is the digital equivalent of writing on the back of a chart the reason for interrupting your rest and isn't used every time you are on a ferry, which unfortunately some of the drivers at our place, and agency drivers who work with us, think. They use it every time they get on the ferry to and from Dublin even though we are not using the crossing as part of our daily rest.
Noel Borg fair play. Never used a ferry or the mode so never worried about it to be fair. If the vehicle is parked up and you're waiting POA or Break is what I'd use. POA mainly. Break if I'm out the cab on a train.
When you go back to when you removed the card, why do you round it the nearest 15 minutes, when it already says you removed the card at 23:04? Genuine question if you can help. Cheers. Other than that, good tutorial.
Allryt bud, i need to ask a question, just say ive been in an office job for 5 days Mon/Friday, driving Lorry Saturday, when i put my tacho in on the Saturday and the people im working for want me to do a manual entry, what do i put down on my tacho for the office days? Rest?? But keep a diary of my hours?? Really struggling with this, Thanks man
Jiggy x You would put that you were working for those days/hours as you were not resting, as you have to prove you were not driving a lorry for that period of time, but have to prove working time.
+Trucker Bill Cheers for that. So am i right in thinking. Start shift at 3pm, card goes in at 315pm, if i manually enter other work from 3pm i can pull straight off & dont need to wait another 10? They go throught all the hour regulations for new drivers but at no point do you learn how to sodding use one :)
Are all taco graphs the same? I'm new to this truck driving malarkey and I'm struggling to work out how to use them. The first ones I used automatically went to "rest period" when I shut down my vehicle and automatically went to "driving" when I went on to driving! could be wrong but I was told it was perfectably acceptable to use the loading or unloading time as as a "break"...so I did that and it worked quite well for a while because it fitted in with my shifts which were normally within 8 hours. Obviously once you go over the 6 hours you need to log a break but the tachograph I was using didn't allow me to do that...or I couldn't work out how to do it. Does that make any sense to anyone?
Richard Brook Legally you can't show rest on dock. So, loading and unloading. Every CPC guy I've ever met has said it's not allowed. I've seen VOSA, (DVSA), guys stopping people coming out of Hams Hall depots, checking their tachos and making them take breaks if they'd left it on break whilst onsite, (and hadn't been onsite long enough to unload/load and have a break). Follow them on Twitter and they post about it also. No, not all tachos are the same. There are various versions Siemens are usually most popular, Scania seem to use StoneRidge which are totally different. I keep meaning to do a video on those ones but never have the time at present. You'll find someone on YT will have done one. Siemens ones can be programmed to go to rest mode when stopped. Companies like you to do that as you get more done. Take break whilst being tipped, saves you 45. But you shouldn't. So they'll set the tacho to go to rest automatically and most people don't check. Then most just shrug it off and crack on.
Richard Brook If you have Twitter follow me, links are above in description, and I'll see what I can do to help via direct messages. Probably be able to include photos. Or go to my other channel and in a recent upload I have the link to my Facebook page, so you can find me there also.
What about the question mark between shifts (unknown time), are you a tramper? because when you are at home you should use the ? symbol for time at home away from work.
Hi Bill, I work for Royal Mail so we're back every night, no overnight stops, we get infringements from the FTA if we dont use ? symbol, its so confusing no wonder people are leaving the industry
alistair kelly I get infringements for using ? back every day for a supermarket chain. Are you sure it's the FTA/DVSA and not the system set up at R Mail? ;-)
Hi Bill, part of my job at RM is to ensure our drivers don't get infringements (I'm a driver also), it's a nightmare when you hear the different requirements regarding ? or bed, I wish the FTA would give a definitive answer what symbol they want us to use, we're told when at home use ?. I wonder if you're a tramper, in your vehicle every night sleeping you have to use bed only?
when you take your card out at end of duty go home have your daily rest then next day you put your card in , it will automatically show that you have not been working on that card .
Hi Bill, or any other driver who can help me out, I’ve just recently got myself a new job with a local skip company driving an 18 ton skip truck, and it’s the first time that I’ve used my digital tacho card. So I’m a newbie, I have 2 induction days the 1st one was on the 4th of September and my 2nd is today on the 18th of September. As I haven’t used my digital tacho card between the 2 dates above will I have to do a manual entry or not ?, as it’s a skip company I’ll be driving for we all know skip drivers are stop start so do I have 3 X 15 minute breaks a 30 then a 15 or just a straight 45 minute break thanks to anyone who can give me some advice
Personally in always do manual entries unless I'm nighting out. Skip truck work, if you never go over 4:30 drive time then two 15s should do but again. I'd always say 30 and 30. I mean, it's break time. Or one 45, covers everything. Very rarely do I ever use the 15 break. Doesn't give you any real rest time. Your trainer for induction should guide you well enough. Always ask if unsure. :-)
I absolutely hate this style of Tachograph. I can't understand why you have be changing stuff and making it complicated. I've watched about 5 different videos and it's still discombobulating

@@sangetube I start tomorrow with the card. I’ll join you in vosa prison as well.
@@geofflogan1564 good luck with it. It's not complicated to the basic stuff just ask someone to show you, that's what I did.
I totally agree with you minatormyth it is complicated at the start and so frustrating when
Your starting out
Thank you for posting nice clear speech and instructions ! Totally new to this and trying to understand it.
I just started to work as a lory driver and this video is very helpful!! Thank you
Benjamin Balogh no worries.
Just what I needed - Straight forward / Thanks
Useful and helpful for my 1st timer husband! thanks
Janet Wright no worries :-)
Thanks. This it is really for beginners. Thanks again .
Nice one! Thanks mate, it's very clear and helpful.
andrey petrov no worries.
If only there was videos like that before I started driving dafs
Thanks. A very useful video
Hi Bill, thank you very much. Very nicely explained.

Do you always do a manual entery rounding up your time
You don't have to just manual entry push down for no then all automatic just put your hammers for around 15mins checks then drive
Nice video
Hi, why do you recommend to use for example your manual entry set to quarter past ?
If you have the time, rounding up to the nearest 15minute interval makes time management easier.
So, 1200/1215/1230/1245/1300 instead of 12:08/12:19/12:29/13:03.

Thanks Trucker Bill, I jacked in driving thanks to CPC... but I'll never know if
" I'll hit the rowd agayn'a".
moo beepbeep May do one day. Thanks.
I dont understand how to put myself on break and leave the truck because when I turn off truck tacho machine turn off
thanks 4 the clarification bill

Been using digi cards since first introduced never made manual entry yet why would you
Was thinking the same thing
Company policy, plus DVSA like to see it done for "legal compliance". Or so I've been told by several site trainers and 3 CPC trainers.
Unbelievably complicated
WHAT YOU HAVE THERE IS A RIGHT BASTERD IS WHAT IT IS
Quick question. When I download my taco at the work it always says my start and finish time is 00:00 Am I doing something wrong?
Mark Jones on download? That's something I've not noticed before. Your start and finish times should be when you started, (entered card at start after manual entry), and when you withdrew the card. joe burn don't know other than yank the fuse or magnet. But there is no point, as far as I'm concerned.

Daily checks are work and therefore yes, under other work. Hence why I round things up when card goes in. :-)

ace ta...
no worries :-)
Good tip. I'm driving a MAN and every morning i put in card and just press ok ok ok ok. I think i'm not doing it right :L
you are supposed to show your debrief time and any time pre card insert that was other work. If you legally have the excess time of course.
Ya i do that.
when you take your card out at end of duty go home have your daily rest then next day you put your card in , it will automatically show that you have not been working on that card .
THANK YOU I GOT BIT I ORIGINALY TYPED WHAT IS TACHO AND WHAT FOR ^^*
Maria Anderson no worries. I've also done the Stoneridge version tacho as well. ;-)
Very low volume!
