    I review any and all generations of video games. It just so happens that very few people review classic PC & DOS games, so I hope to fill that gap. As for finding a gamer soul mate, I met my wife while working at Sierra On-Line back in the 90s...so she kinda knew what she was getting herself into! It's important to find a partner who appreciates your passions. I love video games...and she is big into painting & art. We give each other time & space to pursue those passions.

    Why I don't have a copy of this is a complete mystery to me. I have all the X-Wing games, the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter games, but not this one. Fantastic freaking game, as all the games in the series. So cool to side with the Empire. *heads to Amazon seeking boxed copy... success!*
    Great review, too! Was never any doubt, just saying :)

    From starting out with a basic fighter with the short "can't get hit" missions to cruising long distances to engage in big battles with multiple objectives and story line events occurring in them in a decked out advanced, I had some of my most fun and nerdy moments with this game.

    Not only are the emperor and Vader your bosses,
    you even got eventual-grand-admiral Thrawn on your side,
    how awesome is that?!

  • @MetalJesusRocks

    @brementer - I just looked at the manual again, and there are over 35 keys used in combat, with just 7 keys for quickly setting your engine speed! Most of them you may never touch...but it does give you the feeling of incredible control over your space craft!

    The music and sound is amazing on this! Even though the soundtrack is MIDI, it's original music influenced by the Imperial Death March music, and on top of that, the music changes according to the condition of the mission (iMUSE!), and it really added to the immersion.
    "Mission critical ship under attack! Mission critical ship shields down!" Great times!
    The best thing is you get to say "you rebel scum" as you blow away X-Wings and those annoying A-wings! :D

    I played the hell out of this when I was a kid. It was one of my all time favorites. If Lucasarts can bring back Monkey Island 1 and 2 they can sure as shit bring back Tie Fighter.

    @testdummy22 - A official re-release from LucasArts for modern PCs would be nice. The game was fairly easy to get running in DOSBOX, but my USB joystick took some serious tweaking to get right. I almost had to give up...

    From what I remember The collectors edition of this mid 1990's era game also had improved more detailed rendered graphics and also more missions than the original version.
    Anyway you gave an excellent detailed review MetalJesusRocks.

    This game was righteous! My favorite gaming memory was playing Tie Fighter. Was twisting and turning to get away from an attacking X-Wing and somehow managed to get IN BETWEEN the nacelles of a passing Y-Wing, cut my speed and blew the crap out of it as it pulled away! I'm not even joking, I was absolutely stunned I survived.
    I noticed that Buffy riff at the end of this video....well played sir!

    Remember how LucasArts re-made the Monkey Island games for XBLA and I think PSN? They said at the time they wanted to bring more classic LA games to the consoles. How do we get support for the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series?? That would be awesome!

    Man, so many memories of my best friend and I playing this game all night in the summer of '96. One of those things where it was just part of a very specific, awesome time of my life. Still have my copy in the drawer under my bed all these years later. :D
    It's a real shame Disney shut down Lucasarts. These games could have had an awesome revival with the new films but I don't know if I'd trust anyone else to develop them.

  • @sonykroket

    best part about these games was, you had one powersource you had to divide between engines, shields or weapons. I had presets when attacking certain targets. It helped when you had an advanced analoguestick with tons of buttons you could assign.

    Nice vid MJR! Thanks for bringing back some great memories My story is that I bought my first IBM PC in mid '92 because I had heard LucasArts was about to make an X-Wing simulator for PC. I knew I had to have it so I bought all the necessary equipment (including a CH Products flight stick) and waited. Bought the game day one and it's still one of my fondest video gaming memories. I played X-Wing endlessly. It was the type of game you'd call in sick to work for just so you could keep playing. T

  • @mortman200
    @mortman200 12 років тому

    The game is actually set during the period between Empire and Jedi. While Thrawn DOES make an appearance, this is set many years before Heir to the Empire happens.
    The final mission of the game takes place at the same time as Endor.

  • @Mr._Anderpson
    @Mr._Anderpson Рік тому

    Highly underrated game. Throw in Civ2, Daggerfall, Mechwarrior2, SuperCastlevania IV on the SNES & Goldeneye on the N64 and you've got my gaming experience in the 90s wrapped up.
    You learn to juke & weave like a madman when you fly without shields, but it is so satisfying when your crappy little TIE takes out a corvette. I recall a mission with Vader flying with you. Shooting him didn't work, but you could power up your shields & ram his ship with your own to chew away at his shields.
    Being a perfectionist/completionist led to playing missions over and over in order to accomplish the goals for the Secret Order. At least they gave you a sick tattoo for your dedication.

    I had X Wing and X Wing vs Tie Fighter as a kid. I wish Lucas Arts would re release it on a digital distribution website, since I can't get either one to work on Windows 7.
    Other than that the best Star Wars games are either KOTOR 1&2 or the Dark Forces saga

    Finaly,some one did a TIE Fighter reviwe. The only thing is that you place The game around the Thrwan trilogy. Those books take place 5 years after RotJ. The TIE Fighter game takes place,as you say, after the Battle of Hoth. There is a 3rd game in the Star Wars combat spacesim called Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. It take place between TESB and leads right in to the Battle of Endor. Great reviwe, just needed to correct the placement of the games.

    No trouble playing the CD Rom Collector's CD on XP with all bells and whistles. Just Google "Tie Fighter on XP", quite a few sites give directions. Make sure it's not the Windows version that came with "X-Wing vs Tie Fighter Collection" which changes the outcome and soundtrack, for worse, though the graphics are better. Now to try on Win 7!

    Another awesome review of a classic game. I played X-wing v. Tie Fighter, looks very similar to this. Definite thumbs up for a Wing Commander mention! I loved WC 2 with the speech pack. I think it was something like 14 floppy discs total, but sounded great when hooked up to my Dad's guitar amp. Huzzah for classic Lucasarts and Sierra games - more please if you have time!

    • @trem0lo
      @trem0lo 9 років тому +4

      XWA was great with its updated engine but TIE Fighter's storytelling and gameplay was tighter. It was also more consistently challenging, especially on hard. There is an XWA upgrade project with improved models and textures (totally worth playing if you're a fan) and I believe someone ported the TIE Fighter levels to it a few years ago. TIE Fighter Total Conversion I think it was called. Not sure whatever happened to it but I got it working a few years ago and had great fun playing through the original TF levels in hi-rez.

    • @fiereke

      Tie Fighter had more intrigue. I also preferred the he individual cockpit line out for each craft in Tie Fighter as opposed to the projected HUD in Alliance which is the same for each craft. Details matter.

    Great review. I remember this was the hottest game to have on PC back in 9th grade. I totally got a pirated copy from my homeboy (we didn't call it pirating back then, we called it trading). I've not read any SW novels or comics, but when I heard that Thrawn was being dumped from the EU by Disney, I knew how those readers felt.
    Those cut scenes really worked so well to tie (!) the game into the SW universe on the big screen, I was displeased to hear about it being dumped.

    I didn't have a PC until '99, but I've played this game a bit and a bunch of other PC games in the 80s and 90s at friends. Later I got X-Wing Alliance, which I loved. I wished I had a PC in the early 90s when X-Wing came out. I just had an Amiga 500 (and a C64).
    I'm mostly interested in PC and Commodore 64 stuff (or any other computers), but I enjoy your other videos too. Keep up the good work.

    I thought LucasArts did an amazing job on their Star Wars flight sims. Xwing vs. Tie Fighter was my favorite. The reason I feel these title are BETTER than the Wing Commander series is because I always felt like I was sitting in a stationary ball in space with the Wing Commanders, but I actually felt movement in the Tie Fighter series.....does that make sense? Big fan!

Good games,but not as deep and rich like Tie Fighter when it comes to strategy , controls, customization ...

    I'm really surprised Lucas Arts never made an MMO space combat game like EVE online, which sets the standard for strategy-oriented space combat. I think we as star wars fans expect to see so so much in all aspects of media, we become easily disappointed when all of our ideas are not explored to fruition.
