  • What an experience being able to shoot this video at Duxford Airfield during the legendary "Flying Legends Air Show"!
I'm a member of the Northern California Friends (NCF) of the American fighter Aces Association. We held forty-four WWII Fighter Aces Symposiums from 1998 - 2014 in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. Generally we had between four and six Fighter Aces on our panels which lasted over two hours. My part in the project was to provide AV support to the events and to record and produce DVDs.
In 2003, the NCF joined together with world renowned aviation photographer John Dibbs, and planned a trip to several WWII era fighter bases in England, or what was left of them I should say. Fighter Aces Lieutenant John Kirla, Captain Clint Burdick, Colonel Bud Anderson, Colonel Robert "Shorty" Rankin, General Donald Strait and Lieutenant Colonel Bob Frisch joined us. I videotaped the entire week!
The end of the tour found us at the "Flying Legends Air Show". I had a photo pass for the event and it truly was an experience! On Sunday morning, John Dibbs asked me if I'd like to go out to the end of the runway and join the "Crash Crew". It took no convincing and off we went! I spent the day out there with a new friend, Dr. Tim Smith and a couple of other guys from the crash crew. Tim was enthusiastically shooting photographs, while I shot video. Tim also spotted aircraft for me, and I certainly didn't miss many shots. 18 years later and Tim and I are still in contact.
Here's one event that I've been meaning to post for years but haven't found the time. Every time I come across it on my drive, it brings a smile to my face and a 'wow' to my mind - my wife's too! Enjoy!
This video was shot on standard definition (720x480 60i) video using a Sony VX-2000 mounted upon a Vinten Vision 10 tripod, and edited in VegasPro 16. It was extensively processed using avisynth and QTGMC deinterlacer. The resulting video is 1440x810 60p.

Boy, I wish they were available... being retired now from producing videos for corporations, my new job is producing my video collections. I have so much. We recorded 43 WWII Fighter Aces Symposiums, and I captured around 250 other WWII people on video. It's a bit overwhelming actually :/
