On a rewatch as a DM, it's amazing how Matt introduced the Gentlement completely via indirect worldbuilding. Typically you give your party obvious hooks, like the meeting in the inn or like the quest board, but the Gentlement felt like the party found out about him only thanks to their engagement with the environment.
Sometimes Matt's storytelling makes me forget that he somewhat creates the story based on the dice rolls/ interactions the group has in the world. But you're so right! It feels like they found out about the Gentlemen earlier than he originally planned by Beau stealing the mail
I noticed he had one of the guards mention that Caleb looked like he was a patron of the Evening Nip when Jester first visits the Pillow Trove. This was before they met the Halfling in the sewers who told them about it. It's so cool
This comment is super old but if it hasn't happened yet I hope they come back here at like level 15 and have completed forgotten and they run into a guard and Matt gets Liam to roll for history and says "that's the guard that kicked your cat."
May the kat-kicker get slain... I honestly don't care how, though I have a slight preference for seeing him get squashed by a Tarrasque sitting on him. Or something silly like that.
Just throw him on the planet of tarasques that apparently exists, just so he knows beyond the shadow of a thousand doubts that he is thoroughly screwed.
At 1:29:46 Caleb mentions his control over fire can be difficult sometimes, and then he says more quietly in a darker voice, “sometimes” once more... gave me chills thinking he was remembering his past, whatever that may be.
@@Theories16 Matt mentioned a "wave of memories" hitting him at that moment, so it seems something similar happened once before at least. I'm thinking it might be something similar to Diablo in Suicide Squad. Losing control over their fire and killing/hurting someone they love is something of a recurring plot point in the dark pasts of characters with fire magic (even Avatar The Last Airbender does it).

Oh SHIT you’re right! I totally overlooked that the first time but that was probably the closest Sam had ever been to revealing his hand unintentionally lol. Such a cool little moment looking back.
I like how when anyone rolls low insight Matt never says anything to the effect of "you believe they're telling the truth" but instead always says "hard to read." Too many people don't understand that failing insight doesn't mean your suspicions go away or that you believe whatever they're saying; you're just not SURE that they're lying or hiding something. You may very well still be suspicious; you're just not able to sense any proof of your suspicions.
The best DM I ever played with would roll these out of view. Did you fail the roll and miss a secret door? Did you pass and there is no door? All you know is “you find nothing...” EDIT: just wanted to add that our group was much smaller, only 3-4 players so much easier for the DM to do the rolling in these situations. And we didn’t have a stream to entertain with reactions to characters’ rolls either.
@@harperyourroommate8850 That's a precarious road. Robbing the player that's doing the deception is rather bad form. Though players really shouldn't be rolling social rolls against each other in general because of how it impairs RP.
Many people dislike sessions/episodes of D&D where the focus is not combat, I love shopping episodes, especially early on in a campaign where the party really don't know each other yet, there are a ton of awesome role play and backstory opportunities! The whole theme of this party is "shady as hell" and need every chance to bond (and to fill us in on who they are), so that when the inevitable but unexpected betrayal happens, it is gripping entertainment.
I find myself zoning out in combat episodes. Sure, you need them to a certain extent, but i belive we come here to enjoy the characters and the DM world building. Im surprised that there is people who dislike this kind of episodes.
isabelchmontuenga Same here. I also zone out in longer combats. It can be interesting if the enemy is intelligent and there are interesting magics going on, but basic low level battles can be really boring.
I enjoy combat centered sessions/episodes as well, I especially enjoy players exploring the skills of a new class for the first time, but when everyone in the party is *THIS* shady, every tidbit of history is golden.

Got to remember, Caleb's homeless. This is probably the first time in years he's had enough money that he didn't have to choose between having food to eat or warm clothes to wear.
I love how Beau tries to be this stone cold badass, yet keeps getting roped into Jester's antics. Also how Fjord constantly no-sells her facade and tries his best to help her out of the shell.
@Dead Pooly I remember really disliking Marisha as Keyleith and people defending her with "nooo Keyleith is just a hard character you hater". Nope, same shit here. Marisha just bypasses her character completely when she see something funny/cool to do. At least here she doesnt play as big of a role so I just don't care.
@@Baan616 I think Marisha might be the weakest link in terms of roleplaying (and certainly is far from being my favorite and a very strong contender for the opposite slot), but I also think she's there very valuable as a player. What I see (it's not much), I think Marisha holds the group very much together while out of characters in a similar way Jester (the character, NOT Laura herself) does for the group in-game.
15:43 You catch a glimpse of Yasha looking out the window watching the storm Beau: You okay? Yasha: yeah Thunder and lightning outside Yasha: Just talking to god
I find it funny how nobody in this campaign checks there inventory. Travis: Oh I have a crowbar! Sam: Oh no, my thieves' tools are pretty bent- Marisha: OH MY GOD I HAVE THIEVES TOOLS! TAKE MINE!
It kind of makes sense. When making a character in DnDBeyond, you have the option to gives your character starter gear based on their class/background. Often times this can amount to just having a bunch of nicknacks and tools that you can easily forget about without a second thought.

I'm the person in every party who details everything in my adventuring pack and will pull them out at strange times with unusual ideas of how to use them. If I have 1,000 ball bearings, a few bags of caltrops, a thing of lantern oil, and/or some random objects I've collected, the DM is about to have an interesting day.
For those making one at home, that's 3 shots Crown Royal, 2 shots milk, 1 shot Jack Daniel's, poured over an entire premade long island iced tea. Then you too will see four of your favorite shopkeep!
I’m in awe of how good Travis is at role playing as Fjord role playing as the maligned noble. When he rolled nat20 and then 18, I wasn’t even surprised - like, of course, he’s so convincing even the die is like “oh alright then”
Whne Caleb was turned away by the Crowns Guard last episode, you could just see it was because Matt realised this was somewhere they were gonna go no matter what, and he was going to have to do some really solid prep-work for a fantasy erotic book store. I'm really impressed with all the names he came up with for the novels!
3:05:04 Sam's reaction to Travis saying he didnt always look this way, it sounded like he was nervous that Travis had created a similar character to knott, just neither of them knew😅
Can we just appreciate Nott for not just wanting to steal some shit. But wanting to get Caleb the letter so he could go to the academy. That is the sweetest thing.
You can almost hear the labels in Pumat's voice having heard it. Headcannon: Pumat enchanted the labels to narrate in his voice in the mind of the person reading it.
HeadCANNON? Oh geez, there's gonna be nothing of your head left to hear that voice anyways... and that's canon! ... Sorry, couldn't resist even though it's a year old.
Caleb and Nott have some pretty strong reasons not to trust anyone. Caleb isn’t entirely sane and well Nott is complicated. Was suprised Matt didn’t take advantage of Caleb’s past at the meeting.
*Raises hand* Is this epic non-combative D&D moment? Great give and take to the cast. DM narrates their part, allow players to take the reins. A group of players have the spotlight, everyone else stays attentive and patiently await their turn. Simple table courtesy goes a long way. While this is a show and everyone is expected to behave and what-not, there's no denying the genuine fun they're having and table ethics/manners don't seem to dampen the mood.
I think Travis's idea regarding the high Richter went under appreciated. Honestly to pull an entire plan out like that and keep improvising based on new info introduced was kinda brilliant on his part as a player.
I was highly impressed by each player in this episode, at least once per person. Travis impressed me *repeatedly.* They didn’t think to ask a few questions that were burning me, but they do have a better feel for Mercer’s DMing style than I ever will.

That makes a lot of sense. I never thought of it that way.
I think the only exception would be a contested roll against another player’s deception, where if they lie well enough you believe them.
I'd love it if he sometimes have people false information when they fail their rolls.
The best DM I ever played with would roll these out of view. Did you fail the roll and miss a secret door? Did you pass and there is no door? All you know is “you find nothing...”
EDIT: just wanted to add that our group was much smaller, only 3-4 players so much easier for the DM to do the rolling in these situations.
The whole theme of this party is "shady as hell" and need every chance to bond (and to fill us in on who they are), so that when the inevitable but unexpected betrayal happens, it is gripping entertainment.

isabelchmontuenga Same here. I also zone out in longer combats. It can be interesting if the enemy is intelligent and there are interesting magics going on, but basic low level battles can be really boring.

I think Travis's idea regarding the high Richter went under appreciated. Honestly to pull an entire plan out like that and keep improvising based on new info introduced was kinda brilliant on his part as a player.
I was highly impressed by each player in this episode, at least once per person. Travis impressed me *repeatedly.*
They didn’t think to ask a few questions that were burning me, but they do have a better feel for Mercer’s DMing style than I ever will.
travis is an A+++ dnd player
I LITERALLY HAD TO WALK OUT OF MY ROOM WHEN JESTER SAID " nothing oskar, dont worry about it"
i was cackling i *_HAD_* to take a breather that was gold
The look on Travis' face every time Jester does something cute/sad just melts the soul. Soo much love.
"'The control is a little off." *whispers* "sometimes". I'm liking my recovering pyromaniac Caleb idea.
I know right!
I think my favorite character moment (at least early in the ep) is
Caleb: Are we talking about drugs again?
Molly: We could be.
3:04:49 Travis had the PERFECT opportunity to say "it ain't easy bein' green" and he absolutely squandered it.
It take a real man to reist that joke
Hes very smart, he probably didnt want to undercut the moment
"Would you prefer Black Ice, New Leather or Lavender?" Might be one of the biggest chuckles I've had in a while
