Allison was a talented coach at Manchester City who knew the game, but he was never the same after appearing on the 1970 World Cup panel and becoming a regular pundit on TV. The 'Big Mal' persona was born and it took him over.

Allison "The Manager" was a disaster twice at City. An egomaniac who ruined 2 good teams and set us back 30 years by squandering fortunes we didn't really have.
Best remembered for getting 3rd Division Crystal Palace to the 1976 FA Cup Semi's. Palace were in the First Division when he took over.
He did the double at Sporting Lisbon in the early 80's (and then got sacked !).

That's 53 years and almost 4 months ago now. Excluding the hairstyles, narrow lapels, very-short shorts, sponsor-free shirts and old money, it would still pass as a good programme in 2024.

      Malcolm Allison..
      Playing careeer:
Zero club honours, zero England caps.
      Management achievements
      Plymouth Argyle: Zero.
Man City: Zero (Including making a muck of a great chance to win the championship in 1972).
He then spent a king's ransom on rubbish in his brief second spell there.
Crystal Palace: Zero. He relegated them from the First to the Third Division in successive seasons, spending all their money on the way.
Sporting Lisborn: A league and cup double - presumably because the players could not understand a word he said.
He started a cock and bull story that he turned down the England job. Cock and bull because (a) the FA would never have offered him the job, and (b) because he would never have turned it down.

Too true, no side walked away with the league title in the late 60s early 70s.
Man City 68, Leeds 69, Everton 1970, Arsenal 1971 showed this.
My own team Everton nosedived after two demoralising defeats in 4 days April 1971 in the FA Cup semi-final and European Cup quarter final. I always rated Martin Chivers and thought with him leading Everton's attack the key games when we didn't score, his supreme shooting and heading skills would have brought the trophies we missed out on from 1968 to 1971

Malcolm was a brilliant coach, he was years ahead of his time in coaching, training and things like diets, but he was NEVER a manager, he was too adventurous. His partnership with Joe Mercer was magical, and it worked perfectly because of the completely different styles and personas. Joe was the farther figure that kept Malcolm in toe, but on his own? No too adventurous. In the spring of 1972, City were 6 points clear at the top of the league, when it was only 2 points for a win. He went out and bought Rodney marsh, when the team didn't need him, the style and tactics changed to accommodate him, and consequently only 4 wins from the last 9 games resulted in a 4th place finish but only 1 point off Derby who won the league. Even Rodney himself admits his signature cost City the league in 1971-72.
