It seems like only yesterday, I can recall walking past the beautiful Notre Dame on my way home from Saint Mary’s infant/junior school. The school I attended which backed on to the Notre Dame. I feel so sad, yet at the same time I can draw such comfort from watching the the videos that recall my earliest memories of how I remember how beautiful an era... I was there... to witness.
One of my first jobs after leaving school was as a plumber with a local firm , I remeber doing work in NDme. it was a fantastic building and I still cant believe that the council thought it would be better to replace it with the trash we now have.
I heard about this building today on BBC Radio Northampton and had to look it up. What a fantastic structure and such a shame it was not preserved. Shame on them
To the eternal shame of Northampton Council this prominent and elegant structure on Abington Street, which should what should have been a lovingly preserved Listed Building, was simply razed to ground to make way for a modern shopping centre. Along with it went the exquisite chapel, and some ancient trees and beautiful gardens, which were simply flattened when bulldozers moved in on a Sunday morning. I still have the brochure for the school, which my mother attended back in the 1930's, and the school photo showing all the pupils. In later years there were catholic as well as non-catholic students (all girls), and staff was a mix of nuns and lay teachers, including male. Re. St. Mary's Junior School opposite, the Notre Dame nuns used to carve up the fallen apples and pears from the Convent garden and take them in a basket for the junior school children. There are some aerial shots showing the school on www.britainfromabove.org.uk
A tragic example of the wholesale destruction of the history and identity of Northampton by its Council since the war - which has done and is still doing more damage than the Luftwaffe.

Wow , I was born in 1969 and can’t remember this beautiful building with all its history now gone. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN

The council had nothing to do with the demolition. It was pulled down by the owner over a bank holiday weekend.
A crying shame 😳
