- In one of her first demonstration videos, Cindy shares how to paint with Daniel Smith Watercolors in her Watercolor Sketchbook demonstration for a Daniel Smith Blog post. See how she layers luminescent watercolors, jazzes up her colors with warm and cool mingling, and uses calligraphy for detailing. The window is in the hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence.

"This was one of my first tries at making a video - recorded in my apartment in Provence with limited lighting, on a rainy day, so I hope you enjoy my demonstration. I've made hundreds since. Daniel Smith Art Supplies shared some of their new colors for a Daniel Smith Blog post with me so that is why I'm talking about the colors so much." Cindy Briggs, Daniel Smith Brand Ambassador.

I like this.
Hi Cindy, great painting! Man, I can’t wait to have the opportunity to paint in other countries! What’s your sketch book?
Keep it up 😋
I love the Fabriano 140# Cold Press Sketchbook, Canson and Arches are fine too. Or make your own.
So sweet
Nice!
When you squeeze water out of a brush, you can lift color back up.
Yes, just leave a little bit of water in your brush.
You can also lift light out of a picture with a paper towel. All you do is dampen the brush across and dab at it with paper towel.
Very very nice
Hello Cindy, I've just discovered you and your painting is a revelation! Wonderful, daring use of colour, with unexpected lovely results. And your technique is really refreshing :)
I've read your posts & finally found a Dynasty Black Gold Quill #4 that will ship to me but smaller sizes are hard to find at the moment. Would you say a 0 would work as well as a 2/0 quill?
I love all sizes.
Cindy I love the ethereal quality of your work. Could you mention the name/make of the brush you are using...I like the "point" they keep.
Thanks, ~Adrienne
I believe it is a French Quill, I’m not recognizing the brand from the handle. Maybe we’ll get lucky and she’ll reply one day.)
Dynasty Black Gold 311 Quill. Size 000 to 4
Thank you for showing the photo occasionally. It helps me to see where you take liberties!
This was one of my first videos, I am hopefully improving with new videos sharing the image so I hope you'll keep watching.
Curious what brand quill that is...
She is using a Black Gold 311 Quill #4. I saw another video where she goes over her supplies.
Start painting by mixing and mingling serah.
Lovely painting, what brushes do you use when painting ,interested to know, a nice brush helps a great deal to achieve a good result,
Hi Bernie, I use Dynasty Black Gold Quill 311 Brushes size 0 - 4. You can find them at www.TheBrushGuys.com or I've seen them on Dick Blick.
This is with Daniel Smith Watercolors.
Glad to help. How's the painting going?
What watercolor brush are u using ? This is beautiful!
The Dynasty Black Gold 311 Quill Size 4
Nice work Cindy , would love to know what make is your Sketch book Bob
I use a variety of sketchbooks. Canson, Arches, Fabriano is my all time favorite. You can make your own sketchbook with the Fabriano pad and have Fedex bind it for you for about $1-5
If I put a generous amount of paint on the palette and I only need a little, I can’t put it back in the tube later on!
Yes, but it can dry out in the tube and you won't be able to use it. In your palette you can keep reusing it.
What brush did you use ? a list of the new color names ? ?
I use the dynasty Black Gold 311 Quill Size 4 for most of my paintings. For my supply list visit my website at www.CindyBriggs.com, I send out my list with all my newsletters. You might want to try these specialty colors from Daniel Smith: Lavender, Wisteria, and Lilac which I used in this painting.
Then you apply red gold to the picture.
Lavender is thick on pallet.
What is the name and size of the brush you are using? Thanks!
I use the Black gold Dynasty 311 Quill Size 4 for most of my paintings. You can find them on www.TheBrushGuys.com. Look for me in the instructors section and you'll find an easy link. cbriggs is the code for an extra discount.
Is this video loading every day??
Hi Cathy, I'm sorry I was having some imovie audio problems that I had to correct. It sounded like I was in a tunnel so I re-edited it in Premier Elements. It's all a learning curve. Thanks! Cindy
You don't mention drying between washes...was this doe wet in wet?
Wet in wet for the first wash only around the window. Good catch.
What paper is this? It doesn’t seem like it allows the DS pigments to do their work.
This is a Fabriano 140# cold press watercolor sketchbook - it's hard to find in the US now and I think was only 25% cotton. Actually one of my favorite sketchbooks. I now use the Etchr Signature Series Perfect Sketchbook with 100% cotton which I feel is the best.
When appying paint in your pallet, you don't want to put a little bit, you want to give yourself a generous amount.
Absolutely. Fill it up.
check your audio; difficult to hear.
Can I get a list of the colors you are using?
Visit my website at www.CindyBriggs.com and at the end of the workshops section you will find my supply list.
This produces light on her picture.
Is there a sketch for this painting? I find drawing very difficult even if there’s a sketch to look at….
I drew it from scratch in France so I don't have the tracing for you. If you can email me I'll look about for the photo and see if I have a photo of the drawing. CindyBriggsArt@gmail.com
The underpainting is tarting to have a lightened shadow.
I'm not sure, based on your painting that I share your enthusiasm over DS new colors. The painting looks rather dull and muddy to me, perhaps you should have experimented with the color combinations a few times before you filmed the segment.
If it stopped at 25:50 or so the colors were still clean, but then all the layers added turned them muddy, I think the new colors like DS lavender were great, but maybe too opaque to keep layering. IDK - my 2 cents.
I purposely chose to have areas that are neutral to make the bright areas more impactful. Thanks for your feedback. Every painting I record is a first time through so you get what really happens, not an overly practiced painting. Plus it was filmed in Provence without great lighting so that can effect the colors too.
@@CindyBriggs There's no doubt in your ability to paint with these wonderful watercolors from Danial Smith.......I purchased more tubes than I care to admit. I can only imagine the difficulty in trying to film one of these painting demonstrations without the proper equipment. It cannot be easy!
I like your work but not your teaching style. It’s sounds like a advertisement of DS watercolor, hard to watch.
Hi Maria, This was probably my first video, filmed in my Provence apartment on a rainy day with limited lighting. I'm proud of it because I stressed so hard over how to make it. Actually Daniel Smith provided the watercolors and this was for their blog so that is why I talk about their paints. I've since created hundreds of videos and always endeavor to improve all the technical issue along with my painting too. Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad you like my painting. Cindy
