Did anyone else watch this and think “that was nothing” compared to how their dog reacts to other dogs 😂
Haha 🤣 yes!!
Definitely
The same principles still apply. Just take it slower.
Ummmmm meeeeee
Absolutely 😅
For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
Thank you ❤

I need some advice because my dog is ONLY reactive to dogs, I rescued her. And she seems pretty off put by only dogs, I think she might bite if I don't do this right, however she's so sweet.
@@noelleelise22 I would advise seeking a local trainer to help in person. Oftentimes, a big element of reactivity is the relationship between human and dog, and a trainer can observe that and offer advice on helping that. In the meantime, this video goes over a few exercises that can help to minimize the reactivity:

@@noelleelise22 This is my dog! I have. 7-8 year old border collie we got from the rescue about 2 years ago. We have spent well over 2k in training. Still, she is either super friendly or super aggressive depending on the dog. She whines and barks and pulls and sometimes does the down attack position with growls even if they are pretty far away.
I’m tired of trainers using dogs that are already trained.
And who do you think trained the dog?
@@OmegaPawsDogTrainingIt’s more helpful to see a trainer dealing with untrained dogs for tutorials
my pitbull has a fear reactivity problem on walks cause he was attacked by a dog who escaped their lead. won’t a prong collar make him more fearful?
Same, I have a boxer mastiff Pitt and she was attacked by a big ass Rottweiler that broke through a screen door. Her neck was all bloodied and torn up. Ever since, she doesn’t like any other dog coming near. She also has nightmares now 😢
It shouldn’t make them worse. You only do it with enough intensity to make them focus on you so that they aren’t focusing on other dogs/people. However, you have to be careful about where you take your dog because not everyone will put in the effort nor care what their dog is doing, especially if they let their dog off leash
This is really encouraging. My dog has become really reactive since she got attacked by another dog almsot a year ago. She barks and lunges, and I know its because she was attacked by two dogs while on a walk.
I want for her to feel calm, comfortable, and confident on walks again. I will be implementing these tips immediately!
Something similar happened to me, there was no bite but it almost happened and ever since then he's been getting worse and reactive to more and bigger dogs, it's really heartbreaking because before that I've almost completely neutralised him to dogs walking by and now im kinda scared when I see german shepherds. Wish you luck tho!
Same thing happened with my dog, he couldnt care less in the past about other dogs, but now after being attacked hes hyper aggresive towards other dogs
Unfortunately we are just the same situation
Sometimes it’s better to keep your dog away from other dogs if they’re owners haven’t trained them and they also allow them to be off leash. Training is of the utmost importance; however, some people will not do this and yet allow their dogs to roam free and be everyone else’s problem
Carry pet correct I use it if other dogs come at us
My dog is so reactive to other dogs it’s exhausting. So much training and she still is this way. She was never socialized as a puppy so now any dog is the enemy and she wants to dominate. She plants her feet and will not shift her attention no matter what. She is almost stronger than me now and idk what I’ll do when she is. Shes a boxer so she already has impulse controls.
don't give up. My dog was very similar extremely aggressive only towards other dogs, it takes time but they will listen eventually.
Got a Romanian crossbreed rescue,he's very strong and I've known clue off his past but his aggression to other dogs is wild...so I start to panic aswell when we see other dogs out on walks...always worried off the other dogs who aren't on leashes! U not alone ❤
CONSISTENCY 🎉🎉🎉 ITS AN UP HILL BATTLE
I'm in the exact same position 😢..I've a lab collie who's 25kg, I've been dragged to the ground many times. I've taken him to a behaviourist which hasnt worked! I'm lost now 😔
Thank you. I have a Dalmatian and she lunges on walks and in the car barks at dogs she sees. Unfortunately when I was getting her fully vaccinated as a puppy she missed the cut off age for puppy socialization class and there weren’t classes for a tad older which I sure hope someday they change that. The vet is who prolonged the rabies and spaced them too far apart a bit I get it they didn’t want a reaction with having too many vaccines all at once but boy did it really mess up everything I have worked hard for with my Dalmatian. I will try what you said and will binge on more videos and hope to come back in a few months with progress. I think she lacks confidence as she isn’t an aggressive dog.
I have a Australian shepherd border collie. She is absolutely amazing. We take her to the dog park to run every other day.And she is very food and Ball driven. The only thing we can't break her off is when she's on a leash at home or on a walk. She absolutely has to start barking and pulling towards the other dogs at the dog park. She could care less about the other dogs. She just wants to play with her ball and run as fast as you can.
I also have a BC/Aussie mixed breed dog. She's a re-home that came from a multi-dog household with a small fenced yard. I currently live in an apartment, so walk/run her on a leash. She's excited when she sees other dogs, but the other dog owners keep their pets away. 😢
She's VERY food-driven indoors, but the moment we're outside, she REFUSES treats that I put in her face to get her attention. She just wants to run full speed, or find a friend (squirrel or dog) to play with. 😂
This video didn’t actually show the process to keep your dog from lunging though.
Ok I'm not watching it then
Not fan of e-collars, but this is the first time I see a dog trainer training a dog in an urban environment and saying you can't correct a dog in one session 👏
Ecollars are great in the correct hands. Not something most people should use in my opinion
Didn’t explain how to do anything
My dog is a 6 year old pit mix and she went to doggy daycare and when she turned 3 everything changed we have no clue what happened but she wants to bite and your video has given me motivation to try again and she is getting better finally!
Maybe a dog hurt her at the daycare and the daycare didn’t report it because they didn’t want to lose business.
1:43 I feel this guys pain 🤣 this is the most annoying thing especially in the morning after you just woke up 😭😭
Imagine having two, lunging in the same direction together..... And they are my weight combined....🤦🤦🤦🤦
My dog does this regularly. We take a walk every morning, we pass by a neighbor's dog, and every single time, he'd lunge. Mind you, he's a very heavy and powerful dog, so whenever he does that, I'd get dragged around like a ragdoll 😭😭
Prong collar & punishment? No ta, on to the next! 😂
I have a yorkie mix with a Shih Tzu when I take him outside he barks at people and also goes crazy when he sees bikes. I got him around five months from my cousin. I recently just potty trained him a few months ago and he’s turning one in November. I really want him to stop reacting like this so I can take him to other places. Hopefully, this works. I’ll come back with an update maybe in a month or two!
Mines plays 4D chess. He lays down first to let people approach with their dog to say hi, then shoots to play when they’re close.
I bet that's normal unless the dog barks in a scared way (growling or yelping present) or tries to bite. A bit of barking, lounging, and running around is ok as long as the other dog is cool.
Got any advice on food aggressive/ toy aggressive, over hyper, Jack Russell mix.
Context:
My dad, who got the dog not knowing what a jack Russell mix properly needs. ( he got him in hopes of him being low maintenance for my mom and his dog recently passed from old age, plus he himself is disabled) I have no idea how to train very hyper dogs, let alone one that jumps and nips, unknowing of other dogs, he also never really steps foot outside, my mom is scared if another dog will kill him because people are not smart in my area and have there dogs free roam even though there is a law on it.
I have no idea what im doing for him. Let alone I don't wanna take him to petco for training since thats way out of budget its almost an hour drive to get to the nearest pet store to take him as well. People in my area also tend to say there dogs are friendly and are not.
Hes a good dog, theres things they do teach him. But at least obedience to not run out the door, and to not nip and jump would be wonderful. Food and toy aggression is nice as well..
But I know sometimes you can't train it out of them if its been too long...
:,)
I have a standard poodle that’s 16 months and his lunging and barking… Literally losing his mind around other dogs has become a real problem. He has been raised with another dog he loves his best friend next-door and they play every day but there’s some thing about being on the leash Where he reacts very differently. I just purchased a muzzle today and hoping that that will help. He’s already graduated from a collar that buzzes him which didn’t phase him in anyway to a very gentle “prong collar” and now we’ve graduated to a four prong collar, and it still doesn’t stop him. He literally drags me down the street.
How do I get my 4 month old St.Berdoodle to stop bitting on the leash when we go on walks?
Hi! This is a puppy thing that he’ll likely grow out of. My 5 month old Doberman puppy did the same thing, but once he understood what the leash was, he stopped. Hope this helps!
Yuck spray helps
Sounds like he’s just a puppy bro it’s cute
Try not too pull the leash too much, it gets them riled up with the leash. Helped me at least. Good luck!
Search for exactly that instead of commenting in an unrelated vid
ive had 3 german Shepherds that I was able to walk on the lease passing other dogs and people. Yes they were a BIT reactive but I kept them at a distance from other dogs they saw along the walk. Same walk along the canal. After weeks of same great walk those smart dogs considered the dogs and people they saw part of their pack! I was discovered this when I had to pass 10 or so dogs being trained with their owners. Yikes, I had to pass them. My dog looked amazing to all those owners when I told my dog LETS GO! they all thought my gsd was well trained. Lol
I realized I was ready to be calm and gave the right command .
Currently rescued a husky shepherd mix from Texas and she's a terror. Screams, yes and howls to get to other dogs. She wants to play but she plays hard like comes across vicious. She's not but cannot let her approach another dog like that, Shell get bitten. Have not solved the problem cannot walk at the canal had her 2 yrs this month. She's the sweetest with people and kisd too. LOVES OTHER DOGS OVER THE TOP. problem continues.
Great video. My border collie is ultra sensitive. Slip leads seem to do the trick but when a dog is within 6 feet i lose complete control.
I should take a few feet back and work my way closer? or do you think upgrading to a prong makes more sense...
You're talking about prong collars and e collars like we know what they are and how to use them. Overall, a good, helpful video. I just acquired a ten-year-old intact male border collie that is extremely reactive while walking to dogs in their yards, kids, cars going by. He's leash and choke chain is taut the entire time. He acts like he's two. He's completely stir crazy and decompressing after living with a very feeble old woman in a motorhome for a year and a half; she could barely take him out to potty. So I'm confident we'll be all right over time.
I have two Cairn terriers that freak out when they see another person and/or another dog. I always go to the other side of the street or I will literally turn around and go the other way if I have time. Maybe it's not possible to try to correct their behavior while walking both of them at the same time? They are about 6 years old and haven't had any professional training. Today was bad, I was telling them to SIT and LOOK at me, kind of worked, but they kept barking and one of them started whining and growling really loudly. I didn't have treats so that doesn't help. It's really embarrassing. I've found the best thing for me to do is just keep walking away from the people/dogs. After some distance they normally calm down. Telling them to sit and look at me, just made it worse and made the whole situation last a lot longer.
Did you say prong collar?
For once an ad that related to the video I want to watch
My dog was attacked in our yard and he has become anxious about other dogs being near him. I’m concerned that punishing an anxious dog will only make it worse. Do you have specific tips for an anxious dog reactive dog? Thanks!
I need this too he doesn't know how to react to dogs wanting to play with him so he becomes aggressive I've made progress by myself on getting him to not jump and pull towards other dogs but I feel like he isn't ready to actually play off leash
You need reward based training.
what collar do you use for a small pomerian?
okay quick summary of what to do:
1. Use prong collar
2. Let your dog act up and make their own decision
3. give a correction (tug on the leash which will engage the prong collar)
3b. Tug hard enough to get your dog to look at you (or something similar, acknowledge you over the "thing")
4. When your dog redirects attention back to you, reward them with something they will like (good boy, pat on the head, treat maybe...)
5. Repeat until dog learns to stop making bad decisions
Get back to us in a year when none of this works.
@@j.b.delaney3444 yeah, I get why it seems weird. I actually tried it out after my dog lunged so hard I was worried it hurt his neck/throat on the flat collar. It's been really helpful for him. He's more vocal instead of lunging but controls himself without pulling. Just little hops of excitement at other dogs while walking next to me. He doesn't seem to mind the collar either which I thought was strange. When he wants a walk, he knows to go to where I keep it collar on a side table and will nose it and lets me put it on with no issues.
Great explanation and guide.. thanks
Frida is definitely reactive to other dogs--barking and charging. I use a prong collar. I use the minimal amount of pressure to "pop" her collar in order to get her to pay attention to me when she reacts. However, on days that I have to apply a substantial amount of force to get her attention, she coughs a lot. I'm concerned I'm doing damage to her trachea (or something in her neck). Would you suggest I go to an e-collar now, or perhaps a muzzle collar? Frida is 35 lbs and has a very skinny neck.
What about a dog that was traumatized by another dog at a young age my was socialized from the time I got him now he even sees a dog he starts screaming and lunging at the other other dogs what can I do
I think this happened to my dad. She does the same thing if she perceives a dog threat. Only with dogs. Not cats or deer or people. We got her from the rescue 2 years ago. She is 7 or 8.
I normally don't need help training my dog cause I learned what he likes and how he learns best but recently we got a white Shepard and a border Collie hound mix and doge doesn't really like them, which is okay, he older those new he probably thinks they are replacing him even tho he gets more snuggles and one on one time with me. He doesn't go out of his way to attack them and it's not often, I haven't seen him attacks honey (the hound mix) yet but my sis said he did (she owns honey) so not sure how to help with that one but Luke could be walking up to get loving from me or want the toy I was playing with doge with and doge will suddenly bite him, nothing to much he doesn't do more than a bite but it's still concerning since he is never aggressive. It's not just toys tho. He goes into my room same thing even though I semi understand why (I don't really punish him much just give a warning to be gentle since my room is his safe spot) he also does it around the house, he just bite Luke again when my mother was in the bathroom and he could have accidentally bit her leg if he missed Luke. I really need to put a stop to this but not sure how since I don't want to put a muzzle on him since I don't want him to view it as a punishment tool. Any tips as to how I can train this out? Anything will be helpful
My dogs were well socialised as puppies but they are still terrible on lead one really just round other dogs the other is terrible at dogs and people passing by... Tried treats etc to distract but as soon as it's in their mouth they're back to barking and in most cases choking
I have a half bully and half pitbull. He became sick with Parvo at 3mos then got sick again so we were not able to socialize him. Now, he's bigger and stronger than me. We, thankfully, have a big backyard and he has lots of enrichment inside but he's terribly reactive outside. He knows basic commands but struggles with obedience. It didnt help that our neighbourhood have full of free-roaming dogs and cats😭
My 3 year old English Cocker Spaniel has been attacked 3 times already while we were just walking, him on the leash and out of the blue the owner couldn’t control his dog and slipped out of the leash. Last time was very vicious and I had to go to the vet with him. Since then he is very reactive to dogs he doesn’t know. It was also very traumatic for me. Outside he is stressed and in his own world, pulls on the leash. I am stressed too because of all of it and I feel so bad that I couldn’t defend him. He can’t trust me to keep him safe and I wanne help him. He us such a sweet dog and I socialised him but he became an unsure stressed dog because of the attacks. Makes me very angry actually. The last dog was an illegally imported dog. The girl just pulled a stray dog from the streets when on vacation and brought him to to her home. It was the male trainer who let him slip.
So how can I help my dog?
I have a frenchton, that I bring to work. I work alone in an office, so for security reasons I lock the door. Whenever I get a delivery, she zooms to the door and starts barking and jumping. It is so frustrating. I am sure the people behind the door (mostly couriers) are tired of it.
Is there any other way without using a prong collar?
Prong collars are banned in my country.
You lost me at ‘prong collar’ I’m in Australia & they’re illegal.
One of my German Shepards is aggressive reactive on a leash to other dogs. Nothing as tame as this dog.
Yeah I just heard prong collar and its a no from me
I came here to say the exact same thing
Same here and when that was followed by e-collar - that was me firmly out!
No good if your dog is not food motivated 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Exactly. My dog is not interested in treats
He’s using hotdogs/cheese any dog will guzzle those - try something that works
@@t0l4nd lol again my dog is NOT FOOD motivated 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
@@lynnetrathen4587 before many professional training sessions with dogs it’s not uncommon to have your dog skip upwards or two meals to make sure they are food motivated
@@lynnetrathen4587 have you actually tried hotdogs / string cheese or basically something so enticing “for humans” like deli meats - that your dog can’t ignore it. If you have stop feeding your dog his normal meals in the bowl for 2 days or longer then use his food to train him eventually your dog will take any food I suspect this is the case. Use his/her hunger to you advantage with training - in your case creating hunger is another pre-requisite to your training with this specific dog
What was the correction? I assume he’s teaching “look” and maybe the correction is the prong collar?
Try this with a crazy mal
Do you believe that a prong collar is the choice you would go with in a 3 yr old Shih Tzu & 1 year old - but mainly the 3 year old when it comes to reactivity training.
Can you actually show how you train him instead of just showing us the end results in the videos? This was all talk and not helpful at all
I have two dogs that fight
Did he say 'we hook him up to a prong collar'?
My dog ignores all positive reinforcment. No interested in treats if she's focused on an environmental factor.
So I’m supposed to match my dogs energy with getting his attention.. but you gave no examples. On to another video.
I literally thought this now
Can you use a prong collar on a smaller dog? 11yr old mini poodle
Why would you want to? It’s awful!!!! It’s no wonder They banned them in Australia. So I’m confused as to why this dog trainer is encouraging prong collars?
@@19xxmichelleyou have no idea what you are talking about, it’s best not to voice your opinion on things you do not understand.
@@taygodly okay I would like to know, I’m trying to educate myself about this but not sure where to look. I’ve been watching professional dog trainer Victoria Stilwell for quite some time and she encourages not to use prong collars at all, and some countries banned it. So how are prong collars good? And how are they used for benefit
Yes, you can use a micro prong collar on a mini poodle. My mini poodle has been trained using a prong without any detriment.
never use a prong collar, they are banned in many countries for a reason
I feel like the explanation of how to do it wasn’t long enough before you started talking about the next steps
I don't get this video at all.
My two whippets are horrible.
They bark and lunge at any other dog, even if it's 100 metres away.
In my town some dog owners let their dog roam the street in front of their house, and
then there is big trouble when I'm walking my whippets.
I'm really scared they will get injured of there is a fight.
It's got so bad now I won't take them for a walk at all.
Been doing it for over a year with rescue pitbull. No correction works.
I started really focusing on my pitbull’s reactivity over the past few weeks, and I’ve found the importance of being 100% invested. Like every walk, several times a day, our focus has to be dedicated to their training. I also got a clicker and it has done WONDERS! Good luck to you… we can do this!
Your correction must be strong enough to illicit a true punishment response. Most likely you are negatively reinforcing your dog with weak corrections
@@t0l4nd True I haven't found what 'punishment" works because people don't mind their business. I've been accused of abuse for pulling him out of the street by leash.

My dog is so reactive he pulls full force because he wants to play, really struggling to fix it. He whines and crys at the top of his lungs. Really stuck on how to fix it.
Backstory as a young pup he had a brother and he really just played like crazy with him so he sees all dogs in that way
What breed is it? :)
try that with a Jack russel. the one dog ull never see on a vid like this. EVER
Not a single thing was taught wtf lol
Bring the dog to areas they would normally be reactive, reward good behavior and correct wrong behavior. Don't go 0-100 with situations you'd normally get reactivity
What treats work best for training?
Any treat low in calories and protein so you can use a lot without it effecting their health. Either that or break up normal treats in to super small pieces. If ur dog likes them it's the best treat. Just look for small ones with low amounts of calories
Any that ur dog likes. My dog loves ham so I use ham sometimes he listens to

My puppy does this to my 8 year old! She will not let her by without barking, lunging, and nipping at her. She’s trying to play i think.
What if my dogs reactive bc he goes into "protection mode" hes okay with people and dogs when im not around but when im around i cant sit if people are standing or he has an issue, if they walk in the room and approach me first its a problem. If a dog comes near me and i dont engage he gets mad at them. It seems he wants me to be safe but im also not sure that some of it isnt jealousy of some sort. He also does not approve of play fighting and if the dogs get too loud playing he gets aggressive like hes trying to break up "the fight" me and my bf cant play wrestle or my dog lunges at him(he is a small terrier mix boston and rat so thankfully his behavior has not severely hurt anyone but just bc hes small doesnt mean its okay ya know) so im not sure where to start ive watched all kinds of videos some good some bad and idk if maybe hes playing off of my emotions and thats why he freaks out because during play fights and stuff my heart rate increases and hes not trained for service bc of his reactivity/aggression but he does alert me when my heart condition causes too high of a heart rate or too low of blood pressure so im not sure if he sees an increase in heart rate as i need to stop everything going on rn so he bites the other person or animal involved. Thankfully ive been around dogs most of my life so any fights hes started get properly broken up super fast and thankfully none of the dogs are wounded other than sometimes a small scratch but id love if i could have him around other animals without worrying that he might start a fight if they approach first. I have faith ill figure it out because i have seen some progress already just by trying to get his attention swapped to a different area or item. He has been attacked before without him provoking it and i think thats a large part of his behavioral problems. He has also witnessed me get attacked which seemed to further his dislike for other dogs and male humans. He has no issues with women other than barking when they first meet but many men still make him uncomfy despite the fact he does well wity some. Reactivity with other dogs is his main issue and ive had him since he was 3 weeks(had to bottle feed him due to a jaw deformity that did not allow proper latching every time) i am basically his momma and weve been through a lot together so im hoping i can calm him and curve the behavior so we get many more years together where he isnt on edge all the time and looking for a fight to occur. His tail is tucked when he lunges and bites so ik its just a fear response but i dont want my boy to feel that way 😢
This sounds like resource guarding
@JazzfromOz yeah kinda he definitely resource guards which he isn't super bad about but still growls and stuff I've had him since he was 3 weeks and had to bottle feed him so he bases a lot of things around me and if I'm next to him he doesn't normally growl at other dogs and stuff while he eats. I think it us mostly "small dog syndrome" and he is acting tough because he knows he is small and is scared of things. He tucks his ears and whale eyes while he's doing the bad behaviors. He'll tuck his tail too so I think he's just scared they'll do something anf ends up doing it first. It's definitely manageable and we go on hikes and stuff to help with enrichment. On days with long or hard hikes he seems a lot more calm and more lenient with others dogs and people and he's super cuddly but has his moments. He definitely resource guards but is also reactive. Not aggressive really just always expecting something to happen and being on guard a lot of time. I'm hoping he can be less stressed with more excerisize and stuff. He loves running along side my skateboard and can normally ignore other things while we're doing that
Unfortunately, my dogs trigger (another dog), runs onto my yard and taunts my leashed dog in my backyard. On top of that, she pees and poops in front of him on my yard. Needless to say, my dog and I, both hate that dog.
My dog is a tiny yorkie. This doesn't fly.
I have a Yorkie too and I rescued her from the street. I’m really struggling with her reactivity to other dogs and strangers .
I never use those collars will it work lead collar or harness
No - you can’t get a proper punishment response where you go from negative reinforcement to positive punishment with those collars . You need a tool that breaks that threshold ie prong/ecollar
My dog dont care about them damn treats 😭😭
I have yet to find a prong collar for a 5 pound teacup Chihuahua, does anyone have a source?
I don’t even want to know what a prong collar is….
okay?

WTH electric and prong collars? What is this, the 60's?
Prong and e-collars are banned in the country I live in. I am sure this is a fast track way of training as the good to bad feedback is so severe. I'll keep looking elsewhere
