Still have a market on Saturday. Nowhere as big as it used to be. Empty shops because of the massive business rates, but the council are okay with getting nowt instead it seems. Good vid.
The old building near the church with Arthur Storer's blue plaque is the original King's School, named after after Edward 6th. That is the school that Isaac Newton went to, and a few years later, me.
Oh excellent, did you go on to discover anything haha. Good story for the grandchildren though, “I went to the same school as Isaac Newton”. Thanks for your comment and support 🙏🏼
St Wulfram’s Church has the sixth highest spire in the country, and inside up a very narrow staircase is the Francis Trigge chained library, founded in 1598 and is claimed to be the first English public library (it still has original books chained to the bookcase with original chains from then). Walter Parker has his name on the memorial as he was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, as was Albert Ball who also studied at the Kings school
I wonder how often that Thatcher statue gets vandalized. I'm from Oklahoma in the US and my hometown has a creationist statue of children riding a stegosaurus. The plaques reads something like "ancient humans and dinosaurs once lived together here nearly 8,000 years ago"
It was vandalized several times and some of them videoed it, and were arrested later and charged, but I can tell you as someone who lives here and was born here in the early 80s, nobody cares about Thatcher and nobody really wanted that statue of her, although i can see why it was put there. She was born here but that's about it. Issac newton was too.
how many amounted to "nobody".?...who was asked.?....if you think we have a better prime minister now then i wish you luck..i am 52 and grantham born and bred,
St Mary's Church in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, England has Europe's tallest lead-covered wooden spire. The tower and spire was built by Cluniac monks in the 13th century. The church dates back to 1170, and an earlier church may have been on the site as early as the 9th century. The spire has been identified as a model for Salisbury Cathedral's spire.
Have you been to Melton Mowbray? Market Days Tuesday & Saturday, Tuesday is the main street & cattle market. Home of the real Pork Pie. The beautiful St. Mary's Church. Where the term Painting the Town Red came from.
Yes we went to melton mowbray, big fan of Pork Pie haha. ua-cam.com/video/SgZNSJBuLEU/v-deo.html Thanks for commenting and the suggestion. Keep them coming ❤️🙏🏼
@@SamandCatsAdventures Hope you got a handmade pork pie in the white wrappers, they are made at the shop. The ones in red wrappers are made in a factory.
Bloody Heck it gets more and more dead by the day. Grantham was good in the early 2000's when there was Food Giant and Maccy D's on the High Street and Empire... that's still going? But today it's just so empty and forsaken, such a shame. I mean The George - what a completely useless Extra Large Greenhouse that is. The best time to be in Grantham was 2000 - 2001.
I would disagree..i am grantham born and bred and for me the 70s and 80s were the best. fine fare supermarket on east street and it's underground car park...the annual fair was so much better then...
It should be noted that this is not the original isacc newton pub..the original was located at the springfiled road/harlaxton road junction where the drive thru kfc is now located just under the shadow of the maltings building...i am grantham born and bred and have seen a lot of changes in this town..the grantham you see now is not what it used to be...for example the meres was originally just a grass field with wonky white goalposts on it....i could go on but fellow gingerbreads will know where i am at.
8:51 trust me mate, i live here and its been filled up to the top of the arches of the bridge before. 😂😂
Wow thats high
that school bell near the end made me so happy, yet so sad because im in year 7 now and i used to go to that school

My sister went to the same school as Margaret Thatcher, again, not at the same time.
Hopefully she had a better sense of humour than Margret Thatcher lol

They also have tours up the tower and you can even walk around the edge at the base of the spire on heritage open days, in September I believe
I did see that when i was there, lovely church
Thanks for making this, just finding my ancestry and many of my family lived here and came over to Canada where I am. Thanks again

How far is Grantham to Lincoln City Centre?
Id say around 25-30 miles
Not too far then. Lincoln is probably about an hour away from Grantham.
@filmsforallnations yea about 45 minutes on a good day
Newark in Nottinghamshire is also worth visiting, if you are In Grantham.
We are in Lincoln but have done a bit of Newark ua-cam.com/video/3QTqwn0Bq9E/v-deo.html and other places in Nottingham too 👍🏼
