Watching Rhi go from newbie player to a 7 minute speech on hope and the final hope for peace. My heart, you are all what keep me going on bad days thank you so much!
The most powerful part of rhi's speech for me was how Lucius thinks that she is inherently hopeful, but the speech is about how her hopes were shaterred time and time again. She doesn't commit to hope because it's natural to her, she commits to it because she knows she can, and she knows she must
I would point out that this IS what hope is. To pick yourself up when things are at the darkest. Though Sentry's earning hope is certainly hard come by. But that's the thing that truly makes those kind of virtues valuable.
Man I love Mark as a DM. I have always held the idea that a DM should admit their mistakes (done it myself, numerous times) but it's nice to see a mainstream, popular DM acknowledge that DM's can fix their own mistakes, rather than punishing their players for their own mistakes. Bravo Mr Humes sir. 🙂
Mark honestly is one of the best DM's out there. He really is God tier as far I'm concerned. HIs opening "I've thought about this, it wasn't fun and I didn't like it so here are we are going to change it" is just so absolutely huge. He might have listened to his players, he might have just thought about it.. but what comes out of it is essentially "it wasn't as good as it could have been, here are we are going to change it. Is everyone cool with it?" It's how every DM should be. He spends so much just trying to make sure everyone is having fun and it's the best D&D session they could be a part of. Not everyone can make their players cry, but they can make sure everyone is having fun and enjoying the game. That is him at his core.
Not just fixing mistakes. I don't think the previous rules we're "wrong" just not as good as they could have been, and more importantly not as FUN. Everyone in the world, not just for DMing, could benefit from being a bit more introspective and reflective about what they do. Asking yourself "Was this a good thing to do?" isn't a bad thing, or a weakness. Sometimes the answer is "hell yeah it was awesome" and sometimes its "Well, maybe I could have handled X better, I know for next time."
The way they all described the attacks on the forge, and how they were all competing to see how much damage they could do is the most anime thing I've seen in a long time
Everytime Rhi speaks as Sentry I get a frog in my throat. Sentry is so inspirational and Rhi presents that so well with every word. The hope speech was so emotional and so incredible
This episode was an absolute BANGER. Rhi delivered one of the best moments of the whole show... again! As a side note, can we get the post game chat back at the end of the youtube version? I don't know if it's only me but I have been jumping over to the twitch vod at the end just because i really like having that wind down discussion. Thanks for all you guys do
Mark's story telling is amazing. The way he's incorporated Ayla's backstory is just amazing. Kudos to you all. I wish that one day I can be half the DM as Mark.
I hope one day someone could recreate this story into a book, or movie trilogy, or series. The story of Aerois is priceless and so many people would benefit from experiencing it.
Honestly, I think a novelization would suit Mark's style best. His descriptions are best left to individual imagination. I'd be disappointed to see any depiction but the one in my head.
The fact that you start this out with a very cool retcon for the purpose of literal fun is great! As a player, and fan of this show and Mark as DM, that is a great mentality.
I first discovered high rollers 5 weeks ago when I watched the first episode of aerois. Since then, I have watched 4-5 episodes every single day and have finally caught up. I feel like I know all of the characters so well now. Sentry and lucious have kept me watching. Sentry is consistently the MVP in my opinion and lucious is just awesome!! Aila is savage, i would definitely want her on my side. Not sure how to feel about this new supa-nova though!!! And poor quil, for ages he couldn't fly and now everyone can fly in some way including lucious who has completely taken everything about him and outstaged him. He's a bird but a better looking one with 2 of his own wings 😂
Me: "I haven't checked in on High Rollers in a long time, maybe I'll see where they're at now..." The vid: Lucius is a peacock now! Me: "...Of course he is."
This was an incredible episode and all the cast had such wonderful moments. Rhi's speech of hope was beautiful, and how she's grown as a player being newer to the game, it's wonderful. Also shout out to the great line from Katie "That sounds traumatic, but I'm down for it" what an amazing line 😂
This is one of the best episodes of any roleplay I've ever been fortunate to witness. Mark, as always your creative creations bring forth goosebumps and awe. Hats off to Rhi for a magical roleplaying moment. Brought me to tears. Thank you kindly, all of you, for sharing this with the world.
I always miss the live broadcasts but all the same I have been so looking forward to this High Rollers VOD, especially with the cliff-hanger that the last episode ended on! Come on, Storm Chasers!
Jesus, that check was a DC 1 after Rhi's fantastic fucking speech, oh my god. IT LITERALLY JUST GETS BETTER. The reveal of The Astoria was phenomenal, this entire episode was so goddamn cool.
1:49:55 I used any dice and did binomial calculator to determine. Nova actually had a 77.5% to hit the 21 AC with the D20+D4+13. Getting 0 crits even with Hexblades curse happens 31% of the time, but 10 or more hits out of 11 attacks happens 25% of the time. A perfect round of 11 is 6% though
This sort of stuff really inspires me. Rhiannon isn't like the most technical player, but time after time she improvises lines and scenes, that major studios spend millions and months creating. And she's very clearly having fun doing so. I hope I can become more like her in my games (and in live honestly).
Nova making all those attacks with her echo reminds me of the end of KH2 with Sora and Riku deflecting all those Lazer blast things. I imagine them swapping places with each attack. Cutting and slashing. God I love this shit
It took me a very long time to realize you can block the lazers with both of them. I got so used to the triangle triggers that I didn't realize I could press x too. 😂
I've been saving a couple of episodes for after my surgery because I knew nothing would pass the time like a few good episodes of HR but man do I wish I had cried a little bit less. Amazing episode from everyone involved!
Y'all need to keep the donations at the end in on UA-cam. Now UA-cam won't know about the exclamation point with marks face as the point called Exclamation mark!
I’m reminded on one of my favorite Warhammer 40K quotes. "One unbreakable shield against the coming darkness, One last blade forged in defiance of fate, Let them be my legacy to the galaxy I conquered, And my final gift to the species I failed."
Spoilies: We need the guardians to work on the ship, there’s no other option. I don’t care what anyone else says, this is the perfect way to give them a purpose similar to what they were designed for :0 - also we all love the great storytelling and stuff and the Astoria is the thing that made me smile the most this entire series.
Will say while not as immense as the citidel "mass effect" definitely got the same vibe from the Astoria as like a hub or centralized meeting place for all of erois perhaps even a redeemed valkirian and empire or what's left
Stormchaser is a Frigate. Astoria is an Airplane Carrier. Astoria may be able to carry a large amount of civilians, but it is a *bad* idea. It is not a castle. It is a warship. If you take on civilians, you put them into danger by going into battle. I have the same complaint about Enterprise-D. But in Astoria's case, it's even worse. Since it is powered by a piece of the World Engine, it's not even an emergency evacuation vessel for Aerois. If the World Engine is destroyed to keep it out of Starbane's hands, then the Astoria will likely lose power. If you take the whole World Engine on the Astoria, you make it a target for Starbane, including all the civilians on board.
2:03:13 "A world that no longer need heros" Got me ugly crying at work, damnnnnn 2:03:19 "i would very much like you to make an ability check with whatever you damn well fucking want" Now I'm laughing my arse off with tears and snout on my face, dammit Mark
I do not know yet if he did this or not but i would absolutley have this give them expertise in the relevant skills. Arcana, insight, history, persuation, all weapon attacks(?) and i forgot the last one. As all the things flow through you.
I really appreciate Mark taking the time to retro-fix the skill challenge to make it more fun for the players at the start of the session. It's a great example of a GM interacting with their players to make the experience more fun for them. If I won lotto I would love to buy Mark a beer and have a chat about gaming. Great episode.
I'm picturing the A.S.S. (I hate to do that but it makes sense to me) Astoria to be basically the Yamato (space battleship or otherwise) though this is mostly because I'm a massive history (especially 20th century naval) nerd.
