French Alsatian Town of Castroville, One of the Most Unique in Texas at the Edge of the Hill Country

- I've passed through Castroville many times on my way west across Texas along highway 90. However, I never bothered to stop and take a look around until recently. I was very impressed by this charming town and left feeling that it's perhaps the most unique in Texas.

The best season to visit Castorville is mid March thru April when the poppies are blooming. Many of the historic home plant poppies in the yard. Very beautiful walking tour.
I've been to Castroville once... as we were passing through on the way to Garner. I did get to admire the Landmark Inn for a few seconds as we passed by. I would really like to return and find all the historical markers.
I was very impressed by this town. I didn't realize how nice it was until recently.

Fascinating town. They did a fabulous job bringing that timber-frame house there: It must be the oldest house in Texas! I wondered if people were living in the majority of the old houses as I didn't see too many parked cars near them.
I didn't see any cars anywhere. Wounding how he managed that.
People do live in the vast majority of the old houses.

I took it for granted for many years as there is a busy highway that slices through the town. Once you get off the highway a beautiful town suddenly appears.

Oh My what a beautiful place! It got so much beauty. Oh I fell in love with the church! Amazing and that one place I would love to visit? It seems so peaceful relaxing and so much to see! The property is so Green!

The population is around 3,000. It would be nice (in my opinion) if they made noisy highway 90 bypass the town. It would be more pleasant to visit. It's still very nice, however.

Thinking of heading down to San Antonio in December from Fort Worth, looking for attractions old people might enjoy.
My grandma called it Cas-tah-ville. She grew up in Biry.
My grandparents, Mussman, lived in Biry also. Mom had some good stories of growing up on the farm. We drove through it about 10 years ago, not much left.

@@scottyg.4199 Reminds me of the movie 'A Trip To Bountiful' A story of a lady who wanted one last time to visit the place she grew up in. Finally she made it, but not much left of her town or home. Great movie.

Castroville is a best kept secret in Texas. Lots of fun. It’s a great place to live.

Those homes are very different. Strong french community here in the past then but reading that sign he is Prussian! very confusing. 👍 👌 👊
The community was German speaking so it should be expected they would get immigrants - especially skilled ones, from other Germanic countries.
The region the original settlers came from is technically called Alsac- Lorraine. It is a border region straddling France & Germany. Depending on the victor of a war & ruler, the area would either become a part of France or Germany. People generally spoke either language. Today the area lies within the French nation.
@@shirleybalinski4535 The People that settled there also came from Baden (Nowadays Germany). And the Language that the People spoke were actually german dialects (Alemannic german and franconian).

I lived in castroville and went to school there in the 60,s.the people there were clannish,hateful and ugly acting to any outsiders,it was hell being there.

Castroville is a gorgeous town, it's charming.
C'est bien la première fois que je vois un village américain dont les maisons sont construites en pierre et non pas en bois.
Normal cela vient des premiers habitants qui sont principalement originaires d'Alsace dans les années 1800 ceci explique la présence de maison à colombages.
Alsac/ Lorraine was area first settlers came from. The area is full of sandstone, rocky & hilly.

Puis leur fille s'est mariée avec un Fischer..Les Alsaciens sont très endogames...Je crois qu'une bonne partie de la famille habite encore la bas de nos jours, d'après ma généalogie.
