- Sparring bout putting east vs west in both weapon and style. Burak is a Kenjutsu practitioner who has also been training HEMA with us, against Nick, an instructor of rapier according to Capo Ferro.
Weapons used - katana is a synthetic by Black Fencer, the rapier is a mix of parts from four manufacturers built to Nick's spec, principally a Darkwood guard and custom Regenyei blade.

@@marckpalmer1750 Yes they are sharpened and can make fairly decent slashing weapons especially with the razor-like tip they are simply more refined than a katana. Japan never had enough Iron to experiment extensively in blade design. There is a saying in engineering that goes "An engineer knows he has reached the peak in his design not when there is nothing more to add but when there is nothing left to take away." A rapier is a blade that has had every bit of unneeded steel stripped from it. the Rapier has the advantage in both length and weight being both longer and lighter than the katana. It can move faster and at the same time strike further.

The massive reach advantage of the rapier makes it hard for the katana user to feel comfortable attacking, though if you notice when he did attack and close the distance, the superior mass and weight of the blade made it more difficult for the rapier to defend, as the thinner blade was more easier whacked about.
Adding a buckler might have spelled doom for the katana wielder, which is generally the theme of Japanese sword fighting vs Western sword fighting.
The shield and weapon combination just makes countering while inflicting damage so much easier for the wielder.
. And rapier can be used with the dagger.

rapier is only slightly lighter than the katana. Its disadvantage once distance is closed has more to do with the fact its user is defending with one hand against too.
Rapier definetely has the reach advantage, a significant one. But as already point out, a rapier fighter would be more likely to use in combination with a dagger or buckler if he had a choice, like in the bolognese style for example. This way, he has an even bigger advantage as he can parry and attack at the same time.
In fact, when you consider that the rapier has a thin blade and it's primilarly meant for thrusting, it makes much more sense to have a secondary weapon able to open the way for a thrust.
As far as self-defense is concerned, buckler and sword (including rapier) are probably the best pick after the longsword.
@@benjaminthibieroz4155 I think buckler and sword are better than longsword, or better yet a kite shield and sword. The defensive capabilities you gain from a shield are incredible, there's a reason why battlefields have been dominated by weapon-and-shield styles rather than two-handed weapon styles for most of history, the key exception being when plate armour became popular in the renaissance. When unarmoured or lightly armoured, sword and shield will always be a better choice.
As a person who has studied kenjutsu in the past I will say rapiers are tricky to deal with when using a katana. That being said there are a couple of ways to do it, but you need to be either a little crazy or very good to pull them off. They also mostly involve out maneuvering the person with a rapier.
I guess the weapon is only as good as the one who wields it.
Every weapon has advantages and disadvantages.
But even Excalibur would be wasted on an untrained child.
That is very true because a simple mistake can cost you your life. Though, a katana is a lot more dangerous than a rapier because it has a broader blade for defense, larger and very sharp edge for cutting, and its most dangerous ability is that you can change from a long distance sword stance to a short distance sword stance in less than a second, making it very or somewhat difficult for someone using a rapier to face against when the swordsman gets inside the length of the rapiers and past the main striking edge.
@@vilostrike2187 Actually, I've heard that in non armoured combat, the spanish rapier is the most lethal sword there is, because it has a long range and a speed that no other weapon can match, along with its good hand protection, also better than any other sword.

@@vilostrike2187 I want to clarify that I'm no expert, however. All I know comes from a bit of reading and listening to people much wiser than me. All I can tell you is that the rapier originated in the south of Europe, Spain and Italy, and those were places that had been at war pretty much every year from the Roman Empire to the American colonization. That means their swords had to adapt as quickly as possible whenever the military technology kept developing. I think all swords are the best within their own speciallity, but katanas were developed in an island without strong competition against foreign nations, and were supposed to fight against *other* katanas and finish the combat with a single hit of their incredibly sharp edge. Rapiers, on the other hand, weren't supposed to be the main weapon in the battlefield, but to be used in quick (and sometimes ambushed) combats, that very often took place in the streets, and had to respond in the most efficient way to wear down your opponet, be able to kill them as fast as possible, and allow you to use any trick that you can think of, even by unorthodox ways. I believe katanas hold a much bigger philisophical touch, while the rapier seems to be responding to mere desperation to survive.
But I'd advise you to keep reading and learning on your own, of course.
I have always really enjoyed the look of the thrust based rapier fencing style. It was of course effective but it's also a visually appealing thing to watch at least to me.
I think the rapier is the most annoying sword ever invented. It is strong, fast, long, lethal and really hard to fight aganist unless you also have one. Sabers, longswords, armings swords etc... every thing that rely on cutting is at disadvantage, and i like those swords way more than i like a rapier

I commented on the previous video of "Katana vs saber" there I noted how the previous guy wielding the katana was simply not skilled enough with it and moved with more Hema style strikes and guards. I can say the practitioner in this video is definitely considerably more familiar behind a Japanese sword. Unfortunately, the rapier in a duel/spar setting is just simply beyond OP against cutting style blades especially those that have shorter lengths like the katana, Dao, falchion etc. In my years of swordsmanship, I've never beat an honestly skilled rapier user who knew what he was doing. Granted they are rare where I live. I can say one thing however in defense of the katana and other similar style weapons is using a rapier and impaling your blade into an opponent might not incapacitate him fast enough to stop a desperate cleaving blow to a forearm, shoulder or head.
while a rapier might work somewhat against someone trained to the degree you see in the video, i heavily believe that a more weighty arming sword, of any kind, is vastly superior to a rapier for one simple reason; it's not designed for other swords. and while i do understand that "each blade excells at what it was designed to do", i think what makes one blade better than another is simply, whichever one wins in a fight against the other, and from here is where it goes more to "technique" rather than blade; the blade accounts for the possibilities, the technique accounts for getting to one of them.
In early engagements Western swordsman were able to defeat their Japanese counterparts in duels so many times that it forced them to make stronger swords.
Sorry Charlie but the guy with the rapier is an amature level fencer. Constantly dragging his rear foot, squared up several times, off hand was all over the place. Fencing is all about balance footwork, and committment. His hesitation was probably due to the fact he normally does not wear all that gear and a full size rapier is significantly heavier than a foil or epee but regardless there is an obvious lack of fencing training.

Does anyone even realize this is basically a battle between the two most popular styles of sword fighting.
I wish the katana user was more skilled and didn’t overcommit but this displays the clear advantages of both. The rapier’s speed and range make it very difficult to defend against, but a flurry of katana strikes must be met with a perfect counter or the rapier wielder is done for
Miguel Moronta if anything it shows the advantage of the rapier to the katana. It’s much easier to parry or dodge a slash than dodge a thrust . In order for the katana to be useful he has to get in close, problem is the rapier keeps him at a distance. It’s not easier to get close to someone who wants to stab you.

@The Adventure Gamer i would argue that it wasn't technological stagnation, so much as resource starvation. They didn't have any iron, which makes it very hard to produce steel weapons. Their archery was amazing and unique and they had excellent and ahead-of-their-time strategies for incorporating arbalests and firearms into mixed late medieval style forces, but these things were so effective that they consolidated the whole nation politically and lead to a focus on soft power rather than military tech. Keeping in mind that when they turned back to martial production, in two generations they were able to defeat a major european power at sea, which is pretty crazy when you think about it.

I love watching bouts between two different weapons and styles because they don't know what do do with themselves half of the time and just stand there
He (Buzak) seemed to have more success when he started covering lines and using that to deflect / get behind the tip and get on the offensive. This showed what I think the katana is good for, delivering lots of cuts in tight movements, which could explain (among other factors) the point of the katana being so relatively short, it makes it easier to make these tight counter cuts and covers. I'm glad to see more people from other arts getting involved with HEMA clubs so we can see other methods used in non-compliant, unchoreographed training!
Rapier guy is quite poor at technique. Especially footwork, he need much much more practice.

This and the fact that Burak is not using his Tenouchi for counterattacks. When Nick tries to enter, Burak only deflects his rapier, but does not take advantage of that moment with Tenouchi (heavy stomp on the ground that allows to shorten distances and attack at the same time).
Of course, to do is is VERY HARD, because of timing. But can still be done.

The key is the guy with the Katana has to close the distance and get past the point of the rapier. He then holds a strong advantage. On the other hand the guy with the rapier needs better footwork on the retreat in order to maintain the distance advantage he holds when the guy with the Katana charges him. I think working on lunges and moving/attacking off line would also help the user of the rapier.
Very interesting ! I did expect the rapier to have an advantage in one on one duels -this is, after all, what the rapier is specialized for- but seeing it is fascinating, especially against a katana. It clearly demonstrates what an important factor reach constitutes.
I was surprised to see the rapierist use cuts so often, most of the time in fact. Is that typical of that particular style ? And yet, when he does use thrusts, they almost always land, square in the chest ! He makes it seem so easy ! °o° That is particularly impressive to watch ! (Not that it means much coming from someone without any practical experience in rapier fencing... and I probably missed at least half the minutiae of what he was doing, but hey, it is still amazing to see ! ^_^)
I also wonder how safety concerns impact the rules for rapier sparring. (I remember thrusts being greatly discouraged for safety concerns when I practiced kendo, as being stabbed in the throat can be painful even with the armour, especially if you are charging the opponent when it happens.)
I do wish there was a club teaching rapier fencing where I live. I find that it is the most beautiful weapon ever made, and it has some of the most awesome looking fighting styles ! If you have to fight, you might as well do it in style ! :D
Alas, there is no rapier club near me. (Though there is a modern sport fencing club called « Escrime La Rapière » ! >_< The worst of it is that many, if not most, practitioners of modern sport fencing, at least here in France, actually believe that modern epées and fleurets ARE rapiers... >_< Probably because HEMA is not as widespread or publicised here than in other countries. Sorry for the tangent, this misunderstanding always irks me ^_^'')
Anyway... In the absence of a rapier fencing club, I have to be content with watching UA-cam videos about it... Strangely, there are many videos about longsword, saber, and other weapons fencing, and even more about japanese fencing styles, but not so many about rapier and smallsword fencing. Thank you for making videos about them ! Rapiers and smallswords need more love !
U wouldn’t believe how modern culture has twisted the rapier, I’m yet to meet a single person to know that the rapier was commonly dual wielded and small shields were also used. (Note: when I say dual wielded, I do not mean with the dagger, I mean two rapiers). A lot of people also think true rapier fighting happened exclusively amongst civilians, this however is not the case where the rapier was used as a secondary of many specialty and guard units such as the Spanish musketeers.
I mean, the reach advantage of the rapier is going to be hard for the katana to contend with. Particularly as the most lethal part of the rapier is right at the tip, whereas I imagine the cutting power of the katana is maximised about 12cm down from the tip.
Having said that, in a fight to the death (let's take armour out of the equation as both swords perform quite poorly against armour), even when running someone through, the rapier doesn't have tremendous stopping power.

Now consider that rapier masters wrote that the ideal way to wound with a rapier is to stab and penetrate "until your hilt is stopped by the enemy's body".
Addendum: I also once accidentally stabbed a friend in the hand using a training saber that had lost its cap. You'd never believe how little resistance flesh offers against a blade.

Gray Blackhelm its a technique used in the video game sekiro shadows die twice, mikiri is a move you can do when dealing with thrust attacks. Essentially by dodging through it and following up with a counter attack.

How long is your rapier compared to the katana?
Burak and the katana fared much better than I expected. The times he was able to close the distance was impressive.
The rapier blade is 45", katana is 30". Yep, he closed nicely a number of times. The rapiers rotational cuts can counter that nicely, but he still got through a few times.
Then why he didn't hit the rapier then aim knees, arm or feet.
In boxing this is the classic in/out fight. The in fighter should close the distance as soon he got the pattern.
Why using katana with no explosivity? Specialy at training
Burak, how did you study kenjutsu as distinct from kendo? I'm a kendoist of many years and sense some kendo in what you do, but also see the dissimilarities.
Kendo is not a practical system as opposed to kenjutsu schools, so right there, the differences will start to show. But kenjutsu is not really one thing, but more like an umbrealla term. In fact, it depends of the style you learned from. I don't recognize his form or technique. It's important to note that this is sparring with different weapons, so the form might come out a bit messy.
One thing kendo is good for is the psychology and spirituality of fighting. To my eye, it looked like Burak lost this fight in the mind before he lost it in the body. Nick is an extremely confident swordsman, and that confidence might be worth several times its weight in technique. In kendo you don't separate the two much.
No doubt that kendo will improve the mind set of the individual during sparring. I'm a fellow kenshi myself and I noticed the difference it makes. Whereas it's true that an experienced kendoka would keep composure and still be very effective, kendo techniques don't translate well to a "Real" and practical duel. Kendo is a lot about playing games with your opponent, intimidating him, taking him out of balance and THEN getting that first hit, desregarding the fact that your whole body might be exposed even if your primary hit targets are not (men, kote, do). But sparring in HEMA not only frowns on that, because you should always defend yourself above all things, it also harbours a lot of different techniques that can punish such moves. I agree that the kenjutsu practitioner lost a lot of his composure here, but that might be because the rapier itself is a very intimidating weapon and frustrating to fight against, and Nick certainly knows how to wield it. I myself fought against Rui (Nick's friend that learned military saber with - Nick has a video of the two sparring) with my longsword (it's a feder so it's longer than the katana) versus his capo ferro's rapier and I can tell that ~1,20m of length is a scary thing for a one handed weapon even considering the fact that I'm not under the impression that I'm a good fencer and that Rui is not as good as Nick. But I also would like to see a different kind of approach from the Kenjutsu guy, but it's like what I'm saying, the rapier might force you to do things you wouldn't want to :P It requires some practice to fight against to really understand how you can exploit its weaknesses.

I've been on both sides of the katana vs. rapier match-up and know exactly what you're talking about. It feels a lot like fighting a spear with a straight sword; your body gets the sense that there's nothing it can possibly do to come out on top.
Nathan Kross in 3:15 burak could've win that fight...he already closed the gap and his enemy has panicked. and that leg is unguarded(by this means the fighter is busy defending his head and torso not knowing his leg is exposed). also his enemy expose his torso like in 3:17 . he could exploit this opening too. still good fight tho but i'm just gaijin sitting in a couch

Excellent video! I've also trained in Kenjutsu and have found that the techniques work well... but not until you actually step into that ring and get some confidence sparring. We train a lot of saber and rapier, and it took a while but now I feel pretty comfortable facing a rapier or saber with katana... once inside the length of the rapier, I find my opponents have difficulty getting the rapier back on line. Also... having said this, I'd prefer a longsword... there is just so much more protection and technique to utilize with a good hilt!
For the katana are you using any style on particular?

Benjamin Thibieroz The two hand certainly allow you gain the blade. Trying a blade seizure with a rapier would be a horrible idea. However, the rapier has much more agility, as it only needs one hand and a strong spring to land. Longsword requires essentially the entire body to begin a strike. Not to mention feints and disengages with a rapier are so much faster and harder to see. I won’t say that rapier is 100% superior or something else so intense, but in my personal experience, rapier’s versatility edges out longsword.

I did this with my friend once with me using the rapier and him using a longer, slightly more curved katana? I can't remember what he called it. It came down to if I could keep him at range or if he could rush me fast enough after getting my sword out the way
Nodachi. It's not as nimble as katana, I think rapier advantage is going to be even more pronounced. Overall, rapier is probably best 1-on-1 weapon when armor is not an option.

Is a rapier thrust going to go through even modest armour (such as a samurai would be wearing)? Would it stop someone wielding a katana closing in and dealing a mortal/incapacitating wound with a slash? Interesting viewing.
Katana was a war weapon. It was intended to be used against multiple opponents, whether on foot or while riding an horse, usually as a secondary option when one lost a spear or when surrounded by enemies in close quarters.
Rapier was designed specifically for one on one duels.
Different applications, different design principles, different strengths and weaknesses.
Nope, not true. The rapier was far more universal than that, and fulfilled all the roles the katana did. In this particular video the rapier used is a civilian type as it is so long and narrow bladed, and so is facing a katana that was also carried for the same purpose in civilian life. In a military context the rapiers used were similar, but with shorter and broader blades. So this fight represents a civilian fight with the sorts of swords carried in that context. If you want to take it to a military context then the rapier would have to change to what was used there, and was highly successful as a sidearm in that sort of combat, which was often armoured. But in this video, the context is the same, self defence weapon for a civilian.

Not even correct about the katana. Tachi's were battlefield swords, katana's were adapted during peacetime, Essentially carried by government workers.(think of them like federal agents carrying handguns) Most sword styles that were developed after Togugawa took over are dueling styles.
I often use shorter weapons to fight longer ones and a few observations I made was that Burak started his engagements way too close. You need to control when the clash happens especially with a shorter blade. Timing is key. Wait, provoke, wait more if need be then strike in fast using your faster weapon to work in close. Sport fencers are spectacular people to have teach you distance and timing. They naturally make for good rapierists.
At the start he kept a better distance, but as the fight went on, I manipulated the distance to allow me to get closer, which is why he starts getting hit my lunges more from wide measure. That is in part what by bobbing back and forth is, combined with changes in guard height and reach, all a deception to get closer. Sport fencers are indeed great for developing distance and timing. We started the club with two great sport fencers, and spent years and years sparring with them before we ever taught new students. A lot of valuable experience.

Does anyone know the lengths of these particular practice swords? The rapier looks a bit shorter than what I usually see. Difficult to judge though, the description states it is a composite piece designed to the preference of the fighter.

I think the scoring system here heavily favors the rapier. In reality a rapier isn’t meant for slashing, but here it’s worth exactly the same as a katana slash. Adding to that the additional reach of the rapier, the katana doesn’t stand a chance.
Even in a real life battle, hitting the enemy is much better than a powerful strike that missed its target. The scoring system doesn't exactly favor the rapier, it favors the reach advantage.
Not really. The rapier is very much intended to slash/cut. Every single rapier treatise of the era this sword is from teaches extensive cutting. They favour the thrust where possible, but cutting is a huge part of rapier. But yes, reach gives an advantage in most fights. Fights are often not fair. Also remember this is just an exhibition. We aren't saying cuts from a rapier are worth as much as a cut from a katana, not remotely.
Search rapier cutting videos they can cut or even chop well due to high velocity of the tip however edge allignment takes a lot of skill and big slashes leave you so open to a thrust.
It's weird seeing the Kenjutsu stance in the vid does not follow the usual pose (or Kamae) our instructor told us. Our instructor (which was an old Japanese guy) told us, no matter the situation to mind your stance as it determines whether your cut is valid or not. We usually do no-contact sparring, whether it's for form, or actual combat exhibits. I know there's pressure in dealing with long rapiers, but in my opinion, I got the feeling that the Kenjutsu guy was kinda treating the nodachi as a western short/arming sword.
There's "grace in movements" when executing strikes is what I have noticed while observing..

@@bscpiper229 agreed. I'm more trained in Kendo, and I think it's proper for the Kenjitsu user to use the actual kamae since they are technically making a comparison on Katana techniques vs Western Fencing techniques. It just feels "too sloppy" if put into my teacher's words.

The idea of the proper stance in kenjutsu is to have a better support on the foot in the back so you can get better impulse. In kendo matches, the fighters have to move into their opponents range very quickly. So, I belive the katana guy lost because of technique, not because of the weapon

Basically, the problem was that the fencer using the katana did not use the momentum of the weight behind the two hands and the wedge effect of the blade. If you attack firmly and stay behind the sword, the one-handed blade has quite a chance.

When Red drops his guard allowing the rapier to be near the ground it's actually a Japanese tactic to draw the opponent in to attack... Reverse footing and slice at their wrists when they lung.
Lowering the sword as an invitation to the opponent is a widely used tactic across a huge number of styles, it can be very effective, but it also has another use here. In most rapier styles, the tactics are to control the centre line by keeping the tip forward and engaging or opposing the opponents blade. But, when you fight a sword with a sword handed grip, you cannot contorl the centre as you have a massive leverage disadvantage. The low guards stop the katana engaging and closing the distance, just as they would against a spear.

In hindsight I know I shouldn't have phrased it to be a Japanese only tactic, it's practiced everywhere. That's a bias I have to work around as the first real treatises on swordsmanship I read and put into practice were Japanese. And there was so much emphasis on that particular maneuver that it's hard to consider it now without thinking of Japan.
I feel like the katana guy needs a tad more refining with his footwork and maybe try not to chase so much. Then again, I’ve never competed in any HEMA-type setting and have no real experience here. I’m just a martial arts enthusiast with amateur observations so please don’t hate me if that was a dumb thing to say.

While two handed grip results in power, the one-handed fencing style clearly has a reach advantage. Its not just the length of the blade, but the user's body is far back and the arm is outstretched. Its difficult for me to imagine how to close the distance. While the rapier can go for killing chest-blows, the katana user is forced to aim for the hand / arm instead (and its not like the rapier isn't allowed to go for the arm... its just easier to hit the large, immobile chest compared to the quickly moving hands of the opponent).
From a pure theory-craft perspective, I would feel like the Katana-style combat would practically require taking advantage of your strength advantage and going for "guard crush" attacks. Hell, in saber fencing (even one handed), my friend would consistently go for guard crush because he knew he was slightly stronger than me. Swing as hard as you can, and the opponent's guard will move. Its not "elegant" and its kind of "anti-technique", I don't think that style of fighting is looked very positively upon. But brute force works damn it, even in saber fencing.
The exchange at 2:39 shows the skill of the Rapier fencer. The first block is with the Rapier's strong part of the blade, and you can see that (thanks to leverage), even the one-handed Rapier was able to effectively block the strong two-handed swing from the Katana user. The 2nd swing was on the Rapier's weak part of the blade, and you can see the guard clearly getting crushed. However, the Rapier user literally dodges the blow with his body. The Rapier user issues the 3rd blow to the head, and wins the round. The Katana user was clearly hoping that the 2nd guard-crushing blow would finish the round. Success on guard crush, but failure on actually landing the blow.
A lesser opponent would have failed to block the first attack (only possible due to skill: using the strong of the blade), and a lesser opponent would have ALSO failed to dodge the 2nd blow. But at the same time, it shows the advantage of "hanging back" with the European one-handed fencing style. The body is far enough back that it is difficult to land a decisive hit, even with guard-crushing two handed blows swinging at the body.
Heh, well, I guess I don't really have a conclusion. It does seem like the Rapier has an advantage from this video alone however. But it might be due to the Rapier user's skill and strength. Its really hard to use one hand to stop a blow made with two hands, and the Rapier fencer has the skill AND strength to do it.
Rapier is like a final Boss. So elegant and deadly.
From my observations it seems that when wielding a rapier you need to be precise and focused on attacking from a distance, and when using a katana you have to be very fast and fight in close combat

You can really see how good a rapier is in this video. I have always been a fan of a katana, but the amount of reach you have is considerably shorter with it.

Second video I've seen with Nick vs Burak, I think you're still suffering from over utilizing the passing step like when doing longsword. Your handling of the weapon is why too reminiscent of the longsword, pivoting about the tsuba, not enough chambering from jodan to make your strikes ambiguous. For example, at 3:16. That straight up looks like krumphau into multiple zwerchhaus. You have forward momentum and you just rode it instead of making more calculated, minute steps. Easy to say not facing the ranged guy, I know. You had the right idea at 1:56, which is apply pressure without swinging the sword. I think Okuri Ashi might help with that: stepping in while relax upper body to parry incoming attacks. You've done kenjutsu so you should know it, but this is for others who may not. In addition, batting the saber away probably isn't going to do much.

Very good video. I am not surprised on the outcomes though, on one hand we have a secondary weapon used during battles, on the other we have a primary weapon specialized for dueling. It's very clear that the rapier has the advantage in its' home field.

Well, it depends of the point of the rapier where you apply the force. La Verdadera Destreza show us this kind of swords offers different grades of resistance to movement, lesser as it goes far to the grip (leverage effect)

Would the Katana really come into it's own if this was a full plate fight? To me it looks like the rapier really out maneuvers the shorter heaver blade of the katana. I think this is best seen when the katana fighter closes the gap removing the rapiers reach advantage. Short of that however the katana looked a little out classed in a fencing style match.
With full armour many things would change, for a start, a rapier like this would not be used. Military type rapiers had the same hilts, but shorter and much more sturdy blades, and they were well suited to armoured combat, though it was mostly partial armours rather than full harnesses by that time period. In terms of full plate, neither sword would be well suited to it, most swords aren't.

Rapiers were certainly used alongside plate armor. Sir John Smythe, for example, specifically complained about how rapiers of very hard temper could break against armor. Rapiers became popular before the 17th century, and armor still saw some use in the 17th century.
The types of rapiers carried in war were in fact used by almost every kind of soldier, from musketeer to pikemen, rodelleros (sword and shield), cavalry, sailors etc. But they were almost always shorter and more robust than the one shown in this video, yet still normally far longer than most one handed sword types.
